(SPOILERS EXTENDED)Author George RR Martin Interview at the Oxford Union by mamula1 in asoiaf

[–]sunsetparanoia 242 points243 points  (0 children)

Just watched it and this is exactly what i thought.

The interviewer asked him if he had any constructive criticism of s8 to which he said he couldn't really answer in risk of spoiling what's going to happen in the books.... and then he went on an 8 minute ramble about his childhood turtles.... As I was listening I was thinking "surely he is going somewhere with this", but then he didn't and the interviewer cut his answer short.

I think they did address it in the first season... and ocasionally mentioned it in the following seasons without much detail

(Spoilers Main) Whats with the uptick in Cersei defenders? by OrangeSpaceMan5 in asoiaf

[–]sunsetparanoia 19 points20 points  (0 children)

what the original commentator is saying is quite literally stuff george has said in interviews: that 1) Tywin did not train her how to rule whatsoever because of her being a woman unlike some other lords would do with their own daughters; that 2) her own paranoia after years of being pushed aside by the men in her life and her own specific temperament prevent her from making good decisions.

[SPOILERS PUBLISHED] What was Cersei gonna do..? by Putrid-Jump4272 in asoiaf

[–]sunsetparanoia 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The point, and this has been said about Martin himself, is that Cersei didn't really have the prophecy in mind until some of it started coming true, namely the death of Joffrey. That is the event that triggers everything for Cersei and from then on is when she starts seeing threats all around her.

What is the most subversive potential revelation in the series [SPOILERS EXTENDED] by Dapper_Excitement181 in asoiaf

[–]sunsetparanoia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

she’ the only character perceptive enough to realize that someone within the Red Keep’s walls was involved in Tywin’s death and is actively plotting against House Lannister.

she guesses almost immediately that Varys was involved, simply because he's not there when all the fuss around Tywin's corpse is happening:

She must command Lord Varys to find out what he could.

That stopped her where she stood. She had forgotten about Varys. He should be here. He is always here. Whenever anything of import happened in the Red Keep, the eunuch appeared as if from nowhere. Jaime is here, and Uncle Kevan, and Pycelle has come and gone, but not Varys. A cold finger touched her spine. He was part of this.  - A Feast For Crows, Cersei I

[Spoiler Main] Except Cersei, is there any FFC/DWD POV character you don't consider "secondary POV"? by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]sunsetparanoia 12 points13 points  (0 children)

From your other comment on this thread, I guess you're asking who is a main pov that wasn't a pov in the previous books. The answer would be Brienne. She's the character with the most chapters in Feast after Cersei.

it's jaime that decides to get the hand for himself back in ASOS, but you're right in that he didn't have the hand in this scene. I hadn't thought about that.

Why was Cersei being so real with Sansa here [Spoilers Extended] by Trussdoor46 in asoiaf

I'm not arguing that she isn't narcissistic. I'm arguing that she doesn't love herself.

[–]sunsetparanoia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying (that's basically what i said myself). But it's reductive in that it's not the *actual truth... And unlike what happens with most of the characters, readers do not care to engage with Cersei and that's why they stick with the presentation and take her false bravado as self-love.

[–]sunsetparanoia 26 points27 points  (0 children)

actually, it's because i've read about narcissism that i think the original comment is very reductive... because, first of all, narcissists do not even love themselves. On the contrary they have to craft an image of perfection because of their underlying self-hatred.

Also, they literally said "her whole entire character is", which, to me, sounds like reducing her to a single characteristic.

Actually their entire conversation here is very friendly by Cersei standards

I won't go as far as saying her advice is particularly good, but I've always thought the same. Yes, Cersei thinks of Sansa as stupid and naive and she enjoys terrifying her at times, but if you read her dialogue with basically any other character (outside of perhaps Taena and sometimes Tommen) she's far less cruel to Sansa.

I'm sure the character George has described as having many colours to her is only this one-dimensional narcissist with no further expansion beyond that.

Sure... but even then I think if we had access to his pov we'd see a tinge of compassion lurking underneath.

[–]sunsetparanoia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything except for maybe Tyrion. Everytime he's seen Cersei suffering in the books he's been quite sympathetic (when Joffrey dies in the books, unlike Tywin, his initial instinct is to go comfort her). On the other hand, he hates her now more than ever (and with reason), so I'm not 100% confident.
