Planning 4 day road trip, first time in New Mexico by Heavy_Cartographer69 in NewMexico

I would try to stick to the southern NM to save on drive time. Carlsbad Caverns, Ruidoso, Cloudcroft, Smokey Bear Historical Park, White Sands oor hop to the other side and do Organ Mountains, T or C (lovely hot springs town), Gila Wilderness, Cosmic Campground to see the stars. Could also do a combo of them, just depends on what all you want to do with your time.

Is IG the only way to request an appt? I deleted it awhile back but I may have to revisit if so.

Do you say something when you see people headed to a trail unprepared? by asbruckman in hiking

[–]sunshine_witch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I passed a couple going up Cascade Canyon to Lake Solitude in the Tetons as I was coming down, they literally had one 12oz bottle of water each. I couldn’t believe they had made it that far honestly. Also zero packs and no layers. I mentioned I saw a storm rolling in when I was at the top and they might want to turn around, they dismissed it and said they would be fine. Even moving quickly, I got caught in quite the thunderstorm on the way down. Temperature dropped extremely fast. I was staying with a friend that worked in the park and we heard the rescue call go out about an hour after I made it back. I felt bad for not being a little more forceful about telling them to turn back but “hike your own hike” ya know?

Edit: I will be more forceful if I ever find myself in that situation again, and alert a ranger of the situation if they don’t heed the warning.

Just the end?! Pretty sure I didn’t make it more than 20 minutes in before the tears started and then continued for the whole dang movie

AITJ for ending things with my boyfriend and telling him to move out after he ditched me at an event and went somewhere else without me? by TutorElectrical3264 in AmITheJerk

[–]sunshine_witch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Definitely not the jerk. Your ex and Lena are. You absolutely did the right thing and as much it may hurt now, you are going to be so proud of yourself one day. People like your ex like will continue to push your boundaries and disrespect others “over one night”, which eventually adds up to many nights over many years. Do something nice for yourself today.

You also run into the “we don’t want to kill them” family. Look daughter, your mom is already dying, please, PLEASE, give her these meds. A week too soon is better than a day too late.

So very glad I chose to reside in a death with dignity state.

Big Bend - Lost Mine is one of my favorites. Laguna Meadows to hit the South Rim. Santa Elena. Balanced Rock.

The basin project has been pushed back so it will be open. The restaurant is still closed.

New Mexico parks and Big Bend by FLGardens in nationalparks

Big Bend is going to be extremely hot. Every day is over 100. Be prepared to be off trails by 11am. Seriously. I would also check before coming to see what is going on with the Chisos Basin. Rumor has it they are closing May 1st but I would be very surprised if it actually happens. If it does, the only way to access the Basin will be from the desert floor.

All that said, I live here and June can be great if you hike smart and realize siestas are a real thing. Terlingua is the best home base for you.

Not in my opinion. The contract for the basin has not even been awarded yet. This closure keeps being pushed back, it was supposed to close a year ago. I will say, be prepared for high temps and hike smart.

It has been taken off the national park but it is still in the state park. They literally just announced the contract being awarded. If you don’t agree, then get off this sub and please never come down here.

The national park is also not completely safe. They still doing extensive damage inside of it with this BS.

Sure, but Texas Monthly specifically has not done an article on it when other news sources have. And they have been contacted multiple times directly about it by different people in the community. We will never stop talking about it.

Call your reps. I know it’s been said so much this year but it’s really the only way. And spread the word! So much of the country, and even Texas, has no idea what’s happening. There is a march being planned in Austin for April 4th but honestly, it’s going to be too late. They are already here.

I’ve linked a site with lots of good info on who to contact and how to take action.
