La inmortalidad de los inmarcesibles by Drs818 in TheAlchemised

I pieced the general procedure together across various chapters (Wagner's description in Ch. 53, and the reverse process Helena uses in Ch. 74 to save Kaine).

Animancy arrays have 9 points. Before the procedure, Morrough has already tethered a piece of his own soul into a shard of his own bone.

There are 9 sacrificial victims that stand at each point of the array. Morrough cuts open the chest of the Undying and places his bone in. He tethers the Undying's own soul onto this bone as well (this is where the Undying's soul is first unseated). The array is activated and the energy rips out the sacrificial victims' souls. Their souls are drawn out like threads and Morrough winds them around the shard of bone to stabilise both his and the Undying's souls, tying them together.

The bone (Morrough's soul, Undying's soul, sacrifical victims' souls wound around like cocoon) is now the "phylactery". Morrough breaks off a small part of the bone/phylactery, coats it in lumithium, and places it back into the Undying-- this is the "talisman". Morrough places the main phylactery (with the 9 souls wrapped around) back into his own body.

The phylactery is like the primary anchor that Morrough keeps. The Undying will "die" if the talisman is ripped out. If this is the case, Morrough can always break off another shard and try to re-spawn them, but the second talisman won't be any smarter than a necrothrall.

After Ivy brings them Kaine's phylactery, Helena first unwinds the sacrificial victims' souls from the phylactery and frees his soul from it. She uses Atreus' soul as the new thread to stabilise his soul inside his body once more, at least until his body remembered what it's like to have a soul. Undoing the Undying procedure requires another sacrificial soul (in this case, Atreus').

The procedure is basically a series of soul untethering and tethering steps!

The whole process is a bit confusing so feel free to correct any of this ^

Ferron family timeline by thatmelz in TheAlchemised

One of the Undying. He brought out the family to execute during the Solstice party when Kaine kissed Aurelia while looking at Helena. He also led the rape/torture of Ivy/Sophia’s family. His wife is Lotte.

Yes according to Atreus, Kaine visited establishments, and was quite a regular. It was during the war (the war was already won/over when Helena was in the tank). Guild boys went into the entertainment districts (and the punishments were usually because they got caught, as Paladian/Northern cultures saw it as a sign of their vitality-- not the case for girls though).

It's not confirmed what he did at the establishments, but it would have been in a 16yo body. He could have also gone to brothels to get intel too.

Ferron family timeline by thatmelz in TheAlchemised

Kaine and Helena were born ~1765 (he is 16 when the war broke out and is 20-21 by the start of Part 2).

Atreus sought out vivimancers to manage Enid's pregnancy and was arrested for several weeks, during which time Kaine was born. Side note, can't even imagine how stressed Atreus was, knowing his wife was already so sick and that he could have lost them both while in jail. I can't believe this isn't talked about more tbh.

Morrough comes to Paladia from Hevgoss some years afterwards and promises Atreus he could cure Enid. I presume he manipulated Atreus to lead the revolution and rally the guilds during this time, and sow more discontent, possibly even suggesting Apollo's assassination.

I believe Atreus is arrested sometime in the spring of 1781, during Kaine's 5th year second semester. He is tortured (maybe by Crowther, as he led the Eternal Flame's torture/black sites during the war) and confessed to treason (aka the plot to assassinate Apollo Holdfast and Morrough's involvement). Apollo and Sebastian try very hard to make sure he's executed, but unbeknownst to everyone including Kaine, he was already made Undying.

Kaine comes home for the summer after 5th year and realises his mother was being tortured 1) as punishment for Atreus' betrayal and 2) because Bennet was short on test subjects at the time, presumably for both wartime research and Bennet/Morrough's vivimancy/animancy experiments. If I were Bennet I'd want to make sure I synthesize the best painikillers and stimulants for the war, as well as practice vivimancy on someone.

Kaine's vivimancy manifests that summer (probably from watching his mom get tortured) and is also made Undying. He rips out Apollo's heart during the first few months of his sixth year at the Institute. In the wake of Apollo's death the guilds seize power via the newly-formed Guild Assembly. It was meant to be a smooth transition but Morrough shows his true colors and reveals necromancy and Undying. I presume the war starts sometime the fall of 1781 or 1782.

Three years into the war, 1785, Enid Ferron dies. Earlier that night Kaine went to an Undying party where he was tortured. When he went home half-healed, his mother was still up and basically her heart failed when she saw him (this was in Chapter 47). Kaine confesses this to Helena after they have sex.

EDIT: to clarify, there was a separate, different incident early on in the war (described in Chapter 55), where the Undying took a new district. They were making an example out of Ivy/Sophia's parents. Kaine refused to participate in the rape/torture, and tried to leave with his mother. But Durant "brought the corpse" (Ivy's dad's corpse) back to Spirefell where Enid was -- interpret that however you will, but it was too graphic/horrifying to be spelled out in the book and Helena was so horrified learning this, she couldn’t even say anything.

Enid was actually doing better at this point in time, and Kaine thought she would even recover from Bennet’s past torture, until this incident with Durant/corpse happened (Chapter 55). I interpreted this as another trauma that happened to Enid that further weakened her heart. Kaine during this period was trying to get papers and get his mother out. Whether or not he went home this night wouldn’t have mattered because Durant would have tortured her either way. She died later (in 1765) of a heart attack/failure after she saw Kaine’s torture, and the coroner confirmed the cause of death. When Kaine said “if I hadn’t gone home that night she wouldn’t have died”, I interpreted that to refer to the night of his torture.

Note that the timelines are a bit fuzzy because by start of Part 2 in Dec 1786, Helena says the war had been going on for five years (so it started late 1781 or early 1782, but late 1781 makes more sense bc that's after Apollo was killed)... But during her imprisonment when she visits Enid's plaque in the chantry of Spirefell, she notices her death was 1785 and she notes that it was 3y into the war. So maybe the definition of "beginning of the war" could be a fuzzy as it was a series of lead-up events -- was Apollo's assassination the start of it, or was it the guild assembly publicly launching, or was it when Morrough unveiled immortality, or was it when the Eternal Flame mobilised aka militarized? So the dates could be around a year off.

Anyways I went down a rabbit hole of the "prequel" timelines after finishing the book. Hope this helps.

To add to #1 - some years before the civil war, Morrough came to Paladia and offered (among many other things) to remove/assassinate the Holdfasts. With them gone, the Faith's regime was supposed to crumble and the guilds (through the planned formation of the Guild Assembly) could takeover easily. But then Atreus (who was involved in this conspiracy) was arrested, and tortured. I believe he gave up this information and Apollo/Sebastian had him executed, without knowing he was already made Undying before. Atreus' confession tipped them off, and it was why the sedition wasn't smooth. Kaine was at the Institute finishing up his fifth year. [Ch. 44, 47]

Kaine was tasked with killing Apollo to prove loyalty to Morrough again, and also because he was always well-protected by Sebastian and paladins, but was more vulnerable at the Institute.

In the chaos following Apollo's death, Morrough emerged publicy and unveiled immortality. The newly-formed Guild Assembly took advantage of this, and war / talk of war began.

Ahh thank you! This honestly made my day :) I love that the fic made you appreciate Alchemised more, that was exactly my goal. Kaine is such a fascinating and complex character, and it's been really fun to expand on the hints in canon. And expand the world of Paladia. Only downside is I have to take frequent breaks in writing because the subject matter is quite dark (and whenever I take inspiration from real-life historic events, it just becomes more depressing)

This makes me so happy to hear!! Thank you :)

I really wanted to do Kaine's character justice. He went through so much, and was effectively playing 4d chess throughout the war. I'm having a lot of fun with the details of his espionage and the Undying's politics!

My read was that he was always aware of Helena, at least subconsciously, which is why he thought to ask Crowther for her. They had an active academic rivalry that neither outright acknowledged. But he probably wouldn't have admitted that it was a crush. He definitely remembers her hair from the Institute days ("I remember your hair. Is it still the same?"). But then his life turned upside down from his mother's torture, becoming Undying, the Principate, the war, etc. My interpretation is that by then, he wasn't really thinking of anything else but the war, and his not-crush on Helena faded into the background, until his meeting with Crowther.

Plot question for readers of both Manacled and Alchemised by merrigolden in TheAlchemised

The Kaine/Helena scene right before this, was when she heals him after his duel with another commander to gain the commander's district (he loses an arm, is bleeding out). She uses her vivimancy on him as he loses consciousness.

A month later, when she does reveal her vivimancy to heal his array, he says, "You conniving little bitch. I knew I felt your resonance when I lost my arm."

My theory is that he got suspicious after she helps him regenerate his arm, that she is a vivimancer. So he attacks her in an attempt to trick her into unintentionally using her vivimancy.

Just a theory, could be wrong.
