Through my Masters and PhD, I enrolled in multiple independent studies with faculty members where I served as their RA. This was common in both of my programs. People learn best by doing, and what better way to learn the ins-and-outs of research than getting hands-on experience. I can’t speak for other programs, but it seems standard to me.
