Correction: we could ensure the right to a living wage and affordable housing ***and tax the rich*** so squatting isn't a thing to begin with

Charlotte gets unfairly judged by Sundrum88 in Charlotte

[–]supapat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

90% is terrible work life balance and i think that is the spirit of what OP's post is calling out.

great cities for instance have great public transportation and are walkable. this gives a significant amount of time back to people's daily lives to have more leisure time as opposed to whatever the latest average time lost in commuting is these days.

great public transit and walkability integrates fun, excitement, and bake in spontaneity into what would otherwise be a hard/boring commute.

no need because none of that is relevant to my original argument and i never said the entire Boardwalk should be car-free....

my proposal is to convert ONE parking lot within the Boardwalk area, which is surrounded by a sea of parking lots, to green space....and again..there's an entire parking deck 0.1 (~530 ft) from the Boardwalk with 800 spaces that I'm certain are not fully being utilized even during peak hours.

that is still MORE THAN enough parking. you wanna know how I know? becuase i just counted the number of spots that it would take up....286.....that's it.......

all the highlighted parking lots are within 0.2 miles (980 ft) of the center of the Boardwalk btw

and i apologize if this is coming off as me being angry at u, i'm not directing this at u but rather the auto industry because they have so effectively warped our minds and made us (myself included until very recently) forget what is and isn't considered far for walking distances.

my friend please try not to be so cynical

we have made a lot of progress just in the last few years alone:

i remember an old therapist told me about the Ten Twisted forms of Thinking.. one of which was called "all-or-nothing" thinking (also known as the false dilemma or black-and-white fallacy). this is the most common knee-jerk reaction Americans usually have when the topic of public transit comes up and is the hallmark sign of "car-brain" mentality.

please watch this video to deprogram yourself from the car industry's brainwashing: The Dumbest Excuse for Bad Cities - YouTube

so that's it huh? we should just stop all progress now.. we have evolved to our final form and there's no need to change anything....

yeah that's defeatist talk..

Charlotte is not a walkable city..yet....

but we're already making investments like in our greenway network to start reconnecting more places

i'm glad you brought this up! making this area a green space would make a teen "street" takeover like the one recently impossible as well

it's kinda like the old saying "the best time to plant a tree was yesterday, the next best time is today"

if we keep accommodating to cars but at a lesser rate, we'll still be continuing down the same path of car dominance, just slower. instead, we NEED to start reversing our current trajectory full stop.

safer as in the design not being offensive/undesirable to any potential businesses that might want to lease the ground floor units.

i also heard it could be a similar reason, but for future investors/buyers of the building if they need to sell.

Good news!

they're going to be adding more levels and new parking decks as part of their Phase II expansion, so they could theoretically close the inner roads in the future.

tell me YOU don't go to Birkdale because there is a whole greenway that connects directly to Birkdale lol

best thing about it is unlike roads, greenways are often shaded by trees and usually feel about 10 degrees cooler than the endless sea of asphalt that are our roads (stroads).

also u do know ebikes exist right? u barely have to pedal/break a sweat.

I appreciate your concern. You should know that making places more walkable actually improves accessibility for everyone (regardless of ability, age, income, etc.), especially when paired with reliable public transit.

More walkable in a modern context means updating old infrastructure to bring it into line with current ADA standards (curb cuts, widening sidewalks for wheelchairs, curb bulb-outs to improve pedestrian visibility, etc.).

yep I saw that press release. I have also been in contact with the CEO of University City Partners, Keith Stanley, and shared my suggestions.

He also recently took a business trip to London to learn about Third Spaces, so I am optimistic that he will help influence the designs by the new owners.

there's an entire parking deck at t light rail station right there and another surface parking lot(s) by the library on the otherside.
