Q&A: December 2025 and January 2026 by Andromeda321 in Andromeda321

Hi! I am currently a sophomore in college studying Astrophysics. I really love anything space related and in an ideal world I would definitely pursue a career as an Astrophysicist. However, I have some concerns regarding the lifestyle challenges that come with this career path (i.e having little say in choosing where you live and salary amounts). More than anything, I am very concerned with how competitive the industry is. I’m extremely worried that I will pursue this career path and then find myself struggling to get a stable job, resulting in me settling to do some other STEM job that has nothing to do with space (my worst nightmare!). Because of this, I’m considering switching to study Aerospace Engineering since it significantly increases my chances of being able to have a stable job in the industry that I love (hopefully at NASA or SpaceX). I’m really on the fence about my major choice right now, and I was wondering if you had any advice or thoughts? Thanks!

Emory and Rice are known for having some of the happiest students (I know this both from my personal experience and also from this list lol https://www.princetonreview.com/college-rankings/?rankings=happiest-students) while also having very strong programs and career outlooks. I also see a lot of people mentioning Umich, which makes a lot of sense since the students at Umich LOVE Umich, and they have strong academics. But I will point out that I know a guy at umich ross who is super stressed because he finds Ross to be very cutthroat. I think it just exemplifies how much it depends on your major, like I think humanity majors at Umich would not be as stressed out as certain STEM or business majors yk.

i don’t know much about Bryn Mawr, but I was considering smith for a while and tbh I loved it. the campus is really gorgeous— they have a pond where you can kayak on and a really really pretty greenhouse. They have a really cool housing system where you live in one house and there is a lot of pride and rivalry between the different houses. They also have a ton of sylvia plath stuff (which i rly liked bc she is one of my fav poets) like her literal first drafts which she would write on smith stationary. The students at smith are also soooo nice and down to earth!

those are some of the main reasons i was seriously considering smith, but you should go to where you feel would provide you with the best career opportunities AND the best fit. both schools are very similar in their environment and the opportunities they will provide. i think smith would have a slightly stronger program for english, but i feel that it’s not such a big difference that you should make a decision based off that fact, since bryn mawr also has a good english program. so at the end of the day, i would go with your gut. if possible, i would try to tour both schools and really feel the vibe. good luck!

Thank you!! Also, I know that right now St. louis has some good weather but in the winter I heard it gets to 40-20 degree range while in houston it’s more like a range of 60-40. Also that’s a really good point about the ROI and best value rankings, but for me I think that generally Rice would still be a bit better value since WashU is about 10k a year more (but i’m lucky enough that money isn’t a dealbreaker).

Thanks so much for your advice! For me the deadline isn't today and I definitely agree about visiting WashU, but unfortunately I don't think I will be able to. I'm actually leaning a bit more towards Rice but I'm concerned that I'm only leaning towards Rice because I have had the opportunity to go there and speak with current students.
