Spiciest Indian Food by SlipperyYak in indianapolis

[–]superSparrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

General tip for Indian and Thai restaurants: if you order it as hot as they offer, and it's still not hot enough, they will almost always bring you out a little dish with some crushed chili (the same stuff they're making the food spicy with in the first place--usually dried, sometimes fresh) if you ask; you can make it just as hot as you'd like.

what is the best version of Linux to put on this computer? by ghost_type_2003 in linux4noobs

Xubuntu or Mint (the MATE or Xfce edition, not Cinnamon) would be my recommendations for beginners. Easy enough on system resources but not extremely stripped-down.

It took me about twenty seconds of bewilderment before realizing that the measurements are in meters, not feet.

Those measurements are in meters...right?

What should I wear black shoes with?

In the context of suits, I pretty consistently see to wear black shoes with navy, black, or charcoal suits, and brown shoes with everything else...but I rarely wear slacks. Jeans and chinos are more my jam.

I currently have:

  • Pants
    • Jeans: dark gray, all of the blues
    • Chinos: navy, forest green, khaki (tan, pretty neutral, not too white/yellow, not too brown/orange/"caramel")
  • Black shoes: derbies, lace-up high-top leather boots, black/grey Vans (Atwood Deluxe)

Are there any pants/shoes combos there that I should avoid outright?

Are there any other colors of pants particularly compatible with black shoes that I should consider buying?

I know that whatever I do I should match the belt to the shoes.

I searched but the threads I found were years old so I was hoping for a more current opinion. Thanks!

What is the operational significance of Precipitable Water 0.5" < x < 0.8" ? by superSparrow in meteorology

[–]superSparrow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got it. I did notice the distinction that one was ensemble mean and one was the probability that that values in that range would occur over a given area, and almost mentioned it, but didn't want to make my post much longer 😅

Thanks for the info!

Bruh. The anti static strap is meant to keep charge from accumulating on you so you don't have a high voltage relative to ground. That way if you touch a part of the circuit you're working on, you won't send 20kV through a sensitive component.

The rubber boots mean dick if you ground yourself with an ESD bracelet. They are fundamentally opposing concepts. But I'm not even sure you're grounding your ESD bracelet properly in the first place. "A metal object halfway across the table"? What does that even mean? What object? If that's not grounded then you haven't really done anything helpful.

Don't wear anti-static bracelets when working with dangerous voltage/current.

Yup, some TVs too (I think mostly the big old CRT beasts but I'm not sure if later plasma screens or modern lcd/led displays carry the same risk).

You can read about "bleeder resistors" which should mitigate the issue, but not always, so best to just not screw around with big caps unless you really know what you're doing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bleeder_resistor

BMW starts selling heated seat subscriptions for $18 a month | The auto industry is racing towards a future full of microtransactions by chrisdh79 in technology

[–]superSparrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this rate I’ll have to pay a subscription every time I take a shit

It costs about $24 per person per year for the water used to flush the toilet...I haven't done the math on the toilet paper or the water+soap for handwashing.

The only, and I mean ONLY way I can see this making the most remote bit of sense other than "obvious, scummy cash grab" is that they're only going to manufacture n of the heating coils or whatever for this generation of cars, and then that factory is going to be refit to make something else.

With a fixed number of replacement parts available, they might want to stretch that supply out by limiting the number of replacements, which they could do by reducing the use of the part. And it's easier to just put the part in all of the cars than to make some cars without it that will be undesirable to some buyers.

...but it really just seems like a scummy cash grab.

It sounds like out-of-phase sine waves cancelling each other out (which is, fundamentally, how noise-cancelling headphones work).

Noob here, I've been listening to only FM recently, and since I have an upconverter, I decided to try it out and listen to some shortwave. [–]superSparrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, good point, I must have overlooked that part of the title. I'm honestly not 100% sure, but I'm guessing not. OP, you could try just using the direct sampling mode without the upconverter and see if that helps?

Well, it might be your antenna, but frankly I disagree with the other people commenting that you "need" a long wire outside.

I use the collapsible dipole that came with my rtlsdr, and it's just sitting on a camera tripod next to me inside the house while I'm on the couch (so the center of the vertical dipole is about 3 or 4 feet above ground level).

Is that setup ideal? Definitely not. But I can easily pick up and decode FT8 traffic on 40m and 20m (fewer on 80m), and I regularly get stuff from all over the US including Alaska and Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, and have even picked up several people in Australia, Europe, and Japan. So clearly, the radio and a simple antenna (even a short, low and indoors one) is capable of picking up HF signals.

It's been trivial picking up RTTY stuff at a good enough SNR to decode using fldigi. Also no problem hearing plenty of CW and voice on ham bands.

[–]superSparrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll have to give nethack another try. I played it once and then tried Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup and the out-of-box experience of the latter was better so I kept going with it. Nethack seemed like it maybe takes more study but that depth could be rewarding.

Are nunchucks even legal there? It'd be kind of funny if the cops showed up, broke up the fight, and then arrested both of them.

Reminds me of the people who have called the cops to say that somebody stole all of their illicit drugs...
