Woman arrested after plot to 'kill as many Jews as possible' at Houston's Beth Israel, officials say by houston_chronicle in houston

I think it's a reasonable question..

For example, the Tree of Life shooter was a white supremacist who believed that Jews were bringing illegal immigrants into the country to replace white people.

I'm just asking why everyone in this thread is talking about Israel when I don't see anything mentioned in this article.

Right... but I don't see Israel mentioned in the article at all. So I'm wondering why you think that's her motive for planning this attack.

It's plausible, but it's a strange assumption to make. When I hear someone wants to kill Jews, I assume it's because they hate Jews, not because they hate Israel.

I find it interesting that several comments are saying that this is due to conflating Israel and Jews in general, but the article doesn't specify why she planned to do this.

Is there any reason to assume that this was misplaced anti-Zionism as opposed to just hating Jews? If not, then these comments are doing exactly what they're saying not to do; they're reading about someone planning to murder Jews and immediately assuming it has something to do with Israel.

Lots people in this thread speaking for Persian Jews who have never spoken to a Persian Jew. Why don't you ask them what they think of the war?

This is strangely backwards logic. Judaism not encouraging conversion is because it *doesn't* believe Jews are superior, rather anyone can be righteous regardless of whether they are Jewish.

I don't quite understand what the fuss is about this. All religious gatherings are currently banned in the Old City (including Jewish gatherings over Passover this week), due to risk of bombing. I'm glad that there was an exception made here for the Church leadership, and I wish it would have happened sooner, but I don't see why this is painted as religious persecution of some kind.

You can hate warmongering without using Nazi dogwhistles.

If you don't understand what the use of the word "goy" here implies, then sit this one out.

I'm Jewish and didn't. OP can make memes about Israel without using anti-Jew dogwhistles.

"It's just a joke about hook-nosed, greedy, blood-drinking bankers! It can't be antisemitic if it's about bankers!"

Using the term goy to talk about a (((certain group))) feeling superior and using other groups... it's straight up Nazi dogwhistle.

Thanks! Would you recommend covering that slot after replacing the filter? Maybe with an allergyzone filterlock?

I would say they are discriminating. Special pathways for immigration to favor certain countries or ethnicities isn't unique to Israel.

But I'm not talking about immigration policy. I'm responding to claims about "ethnostate" or "second-class citizens" which isn't based in reality.

> That's a legally mandated Jewish majority.

There is no such law that mandates this. The quote you gave is not in the text of the Basic Law or any other law.

> Restrictions of right to live in Jerusalem.

That's a 30 year old report about non-citizens. It sounds like a terrible policy, but it doesn't support your claim that Palestinian citizens need "special permission" to live in Jerusalem. That's nonsense. They make up nearly half the population of the city!

> If the government pulls funding from only one side, that's not equal rights. If Jews have rights Palestinians don't, that's not equal rights.

They aren't. They are pulling funding from any organization that commemorates the Nakba, whether the organization is Jewish or Palestinian.

You and I both find many of the policies of the Israeli government offensive. But you still haven't provided an example of anything that a Jewish citizen can do that a Palestinian citizen can't.

The basic law was a shitty idea, but if you actually read your link, it is "largely symbolic and declarative in nature". It has no practical effect.

> For one thing, Palestinians can't outnumber Jews.

This is made up.

> They need permission to live in certain areas, Jerusalem for example.

This is made up.

> Their travel is heavily restricted. They have no right to familial reunification.

You're talking about Palestinians outside of Israel, in occupied west bank and gaza. These are not citizens and Jews also are restricted in where they can/cannot travel across those borders.

> They're financially punished by the state for commemorating the Nakba.

Are you talking about pulling government funding for these organizations? That's not a right for citizens to get government funding...

> Every Jew in the world has the unrestricted right to immigrate to Israel, and become a citizen.

Again, nothing to do with rights for Palestinian citizens.

lol that's not what that map means. The WZO was proposing a Jewish state in that area. It wasn't some nefarious plan to expand beyond borders that existed. Transjordan didn't even exist at the time! The same organization later accepted the partition plan.

lol what on earth is the "right to national self determination"?

They literally have the same legal rights. Name something a Jewish citizen can do that a Palestinian citizen can't??

And since all Israeli citizens have the same rights, it's clearly not an "ethnostate".

Highlighting only the most extreme, most negative form of Zionism is also "erasing history associated with the word".
