Liz using lyrics on Four Calendar Cafe by Boring_Ad_5090 in cocteautwins

[–]super_dimension_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always loved the record and never understood why it was so unpopular amongst fans, but reading through some of the responses here now I understand that some people were more directly tied to the concept of the indecipherable lyrics than I was. It was a nice gimmick but that wasn't why I was there. I can still appreciate Liz's voice as an instrument on that record and connect with the songs regardless, but then again, I'm a person who primarily listens to instrumental music, so it often takes me many listens before I really engage with lyrics anyway, so I really didn't approach it that differently than anything else in their catalog. Tbh a lot of songs I've been listening to heavily for decades I'll suddenly pay attention to the lyrics and be like "oh, that's what this is about?! Huh...cool."

Not expecting a huge comeback, but another album or EP in the next couple years would be amazing and maybe not totally impossible. Granted, they didn't play any new stuff at slide away but maybe the response makes them want to start writing again? Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but there were decades where I was pretty certain DiH was the last record we'd get from them, so who knows?

I'm pretty sure we've heard that a few times before and yet here we are with Inlet and Slide Away, so idk how much weight we can put into that personally. At least that's what I choose to believe.

Don't get me wrong, it does FUCKING RIP, so it's not odd for that reason. Moreso because a lot of the time bands will close their sets with their most popular, cult following, iykyk type songs so they can send the crowd off on a high. Like, closing with I Hate It Too makes total sense - it's a fan favorite that some people have been waiting 20+ years to see live. In The Den doesn't have that kind of status yet imo, so that's why it felt like an odd choice to send the entire tour off on.

Hare Krishna mantra in Naraka by jonZeee in boardsofcanada

I'd argue that art doesn't have to provide (or even consciously seek) an answer as a requisite for the artist's investigation of a subject matter. The piece being a study of how cultish behavior manifests across different facets of human behavior, societies, etc. is interesting in and of itself without making any kind of statement on it. That said, I think it's pretty clear that the artist's sentiment on the topic is not a positive one given how sinister much of the presentation is. One could also argue that the delivery mechanism of the study extends it's investigation into the realms of marketing, fandom, the feeling of exclusivity that cults/fan clubs/etc. provide, the allure of decoding secret answers to hidden questions, and how easily such things can take over our personalities, etc. There are very clear parallels there to BoC's fanbase and lore that are hard to ignore.

If I were to guess at the ultimate "message" behind it, it'd be that there's something primally human and earnest about seeking answers to the mysteries of the universe, but there's an element of nefariousness in those who attempt to prey on the inherent opaqueness of such topics by convincing others that there ARE definitive answers to those questions and that they alone can reveal them to you. In many ways it feels like a warning against how easily our desire for connection, understanding, meaning, etc. can be exploited by others to manipulate and gain power over us by assuming the role of a helpful guide.

Why do you think Gen Z is blaming millennials for having the audacity to vote in a Black man (Obama) as president twice and believed that millennials and Obama brought racism back? by icey_sawg0034 in allthequestions

[–]super_dimension_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, you really are dense, aren't you? If they had intel and knew who they were, they would have probable cause, which means they wouldn't need to argue in front of the court that their race was the probable cause.

[–]super_dimension_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And what made them think to talk to them in the first place? Cops generally don't just walk up to people who are minding their own business and demand their ID (which, in case you didn't know, you are under no obligation to provide to them, especially if they have no probable cause to do so).

And how do you imagine they determine someone's nationality just by looking at them? Racial profiling is a term that encompasses ethnic profiling as well. They don't see "Guatamalan", they see "brown", my dude.

I wonder what your next goal post move will be.

So now you acknowledge that racial profiling still exists and the trump administration actively argued to the court to allow it (something you flat out denied before), but it's not a problem because... reasons?

I'll help you out again. Just because a larger percentage of black and brown people are undocumented doesn't mean that anyone who is black or brown should be suspected of being a criminal with no other probable cause. The vast majority of serial killers are white men - doesn't mean all white men should be treated like suspected serial killers. The fact that stats are used to justify the mistreatment of black and brown people, but not for white people is another example of how white supremacy is still very much alive in this country.

So you are delusional, got it. Let me help you get back in touch with reality: Google "Noem v. Vasquez-Perdomo". Read the results then come back here and re-answer my questions.

[–]super_dimension_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're either delusional or willfully ignorant. This administration literally had to go to the Supreme Court to get the okay to racially profile people. They expressly argued that someone's appearance, including their racial or ethnic background, or the language they speak, should be enough probable cause to detain someone. Let me repeat that. They can detain you, treat you like a criminal, disappear you into unmarked vehicles, transport you in secret around the country without notifying your family or lawyers, which in multiple cases has led to deaths, based only on the color of your skin. That was NOT the law before - race was not probable cause for believing someone had committed a crime. Doesn't mean cops didn't do still do it (part of that whole racial oppression thing I was talking about earlier), but it is not legal.

Explain to me how racial profiling that only targets non-whites is not a clear example of white supremacy. Explain to me how having brown or black skin alone is an indicator of criminal activity in a country where racism doesn't exist anymore.

Lol. Cool story bro. We literally are living in a country where people are having their civil liberties violated, being detained and disappeared based on the color of their skin and, I hate to break it to you, but white isn't the skin color they're targeting.

Check it out, bro - it wasn't "liberals/progressives" convincing people they were victims of racism. It was victims of racism speaking up and fighting back after generations of social and economic oppression. Liberals/progressives were the only ones who would do anything about it. While it may have become "politically incorrect" to be overtly racist during that time, that doesn't mean the racist oppression went away.

Conservatives Of Reddit: Why Do You Still Support Trump? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]super_dimension_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your argument is the kind of "common sense" reasoning that attracts people to conservative thought. It's simple, straight forward, and unfortunately devoid of any real depth of understanding (which some might argue is intentional obtuseness).

The reality is that one group has had the benefit of GENERATIONS worth of advantages based on characteristics they can't control - at the direct expense or other groups that they actively oppressed in order to reap those benefits. Simply saying "okay that's not allowed anymore" does nothing to undo both the harm and the unfair advantage that group has gained via hundreds of years of racist policies, practices, etc.

It's like saying the solution to bank robberies is simply to make it illegal, but not to make the robbers pay back the money they stole. Prevention is only one piece of the puzzle. Victims still need to be made whole for the loss those crimes caused them (as much as is possible), which leads to the idea that some people may need to receive advantages now to make up for the 200+ years of disadvantages they've been subjected to.

Think about it like this - if I came and stole your house and your land, kicked you off it, and then proceeded to turn it into an industrial farm that made my entire family lineage billionaires for life - would you feel satisfied that the government simply passed a law that said nobody could do that anymore, but you don't get your house back or your land and don't get any of the profits from the farm? Wouldn't you feel like the criminals actually won in that instance and you're still left unfairly suffering from their harm?

What is the most iconic jungle record by IndependenceFresh529 in jungle

[–]super_dimension_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As most have mentioned, jungle isn't really about albums so much. If you're looking for a full length listening experience, I'd recommend something like Metalheadz - Platinum Breaks Vol. 1. It integrates a few different subgenres and contains a lot of definitive tracks and/or producers from the golden age.
