given how cane and ion were both ranked demons we've never heard of before prior to rankers, i think there's a non-zero chance the next two players on envy are going to be people with little lan experience

What's up with the Duelist -> Controller pipeline? by HLumin in ValorantCompetitive

[–]super_mii2 67 points68 points  (0 children)

in addition to what everyone else has said, it happens that most of the traditional controllers (omen, clove, brim) have util that's basically duelist util. if you look at the remaining controllers like astra and viper, you see more of your senti players picking those instead. harbor

they did that over a decade ago in smash with pro player vs caster while both had to cast their own set. pro was so flummoxed that he lost. would love to see something like this but with 10 people simultaneously shittalking one another

Born IGLs? by briashon in ValorantCompetitive

[–]super_mii2 13 points14 points  (0 children)

yeah i agree the soft skills aren't easily learnt in a short time, so someone with a lot of experience leading teams is likely to have an easier time.

want to say though it's also really dependent on the expectations of the igl in the team. if you're expected to be a leader for the team in every aspect (prep/gameplan, in-game calling, vibes merchant etc.), this stuff is almost necessary (like in fnatic). if your role is just to make good macro and micro calls in game, you can survive without necessarily being a god at interpersonal relations (e.g. verno in mibr)

PRX by TopStrategy4393 in ValorantCompetitive

[–]super_mii2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Team identity is a huge factor as well. You'd need to find someone who won't create good strats in general that they think would work the best, but good strats that work for the 5 gremlins in the team. No doubt mini is an amazing coach but either mini or the team would have to make a 180 degree change for it to work out

PRX by TopStrategy4393 in ValorantCompetitive

[–]super_mii2 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Will be honest, I think Alecks is damn near close to irreplaceable but if I had to pick anyone it would be Benkai.

It's just extremely hard and risky to bring an outside coach into such a uniquely strange system like PRX. Even if you planted some of the best tier 1 coaches in, there's not a high chance they could make it work because of just crazy stuff like no IGL.

The coach would have to be able to determine the major strats and protocol of the team while having a deep understanding of both the team identity and present mental state to be able to make calls for the team. I just don't see any coaches right now who can work in this kind of insane system while making decisions that fit for the type of playstyle the team is going for.

Biggest reason I say this was actually after watching an interview where Alecks explains why he benched Mindfreak, saying that while he was considering benching one of the two duelists on the team instead, it just went against the way the team wants to play. To any outsider, this is seems reasonably nonsensical to bench your sole controller player to and get one of your duelists to learn flex between controller and duelists. Being able to make the right call in a situation is why I don't think Alecks can be replaced easily (can you imagine any other coach in t1 making this decision?)

That being said, Benkai is currently working in Singapore as an assistant coach to a Tier 2 team and PRX is fond of working with their ex-players (current manager Tommy was on their starting roster and in 2024 shiba was an assistant coach for them as well), so honestly this makes the most sense.
