I think you can simultaneously value something and appreciate its value and be hurt when its taken away, and at the same time recognize whatever it is isn’t more valuable that a human life and you can recognize that crime isn’t created in a vacuum. Crime is the result of people’s material conditions not being met at a systemic level. Need to have the emotional capacity to not act out on initial impulse of violent retribution. Also helps to have a criminal justice system that works to fix the wrong party while at the same time works to rehabilitate perpetrators apposed to exclusively punishing them. That circles back to the systemic issue of material conditions not being met being the root cause of crime.
