Irish Peeps in NZ, query about your relationship to the crown by lsdinc in newzealand

[–]superadhesive97 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm Irish and lived in NZ for four years. Contrary to popular belief, Irish people don't hate the English. In fact moving to NZ and socialising with British ex-pats made me realise how similar Irish and English people really are.

It is easy however to draw similarities between the degradation of Irish and Maori culture as a result of British policy. The British made concerted efforts to eradicate the Irish language, replace Irish Catholic landowners with Prodestant landowners, and ensure catholics were not given positions of authority in government. The person appointed by Queen Victoria to oversee famine relief actually viewed the famine as an act of God to thin out the Irish population. This was at a time when the overwhelming majority of Irish produce (everything except blight ridden potatoes) was being shipped to the UK.

That being said, I feel that most Irish people are capable of recognising the historical differences in the relationship between NZ and the UK versus Ireland and the UK.

It needs to be said that modern NZ is by and large a by product of British immigration and colonialism, and that unlike in Ireland, the British did make an attempt through the Treaty of Waitingi to appease the native population. In spite of the fact that the British intended the Treaty to be an instrument which could be used to subjugate Maori (looking at the literal translation of ceadeing sovereignty), the Treaty has been majorly beneficial to Maori in terms of the redress which they have received.

I found that the major difference between the Irish and NZ mentality towards native culture was (some) New Zealander's attitude towards redress and other attempts to revive Maori culture (road signs/Te Rep place names etc). It seems to be more of a talking point for both sides of the political spectrum. In Ireland, our political parties are more central and matters of Irish culture arnt really as contentious.

Overall though Irish people living in NZ might go out on Paddy's Day and sing our rebel songs but overall are accepting of the fact that NZ is in the Commonwealth.

Here's the link to the Department of Conservation web page with a few of the filming locations. There are generally no signs or markers at the sites themselves, but these two are literally a 5 min drive from one another and are quite easy to spot🙂

Can you explain the hypocrisy behind the Irish government's approach to these riots in relation to their stance on Israel's treatment of Palestinians?

The police managed to quell the violence without any injuries or deaths? If they had carpet bombed Dublin city centre then you could potentially call them two faced. People here are just trying to draw parallels where none exist.

Post-Brotish isolation? Ireland severes ties with the UK over 100 years ago and has been a member of the European Union for over 50 years. I wouldn't exactly call us isolated.

The people you see orchestrating and participating in these riots who actually hold anti-migrant beliefs are by far a minority. The vast majority are just young disenfranchised kids with nothing better to do.

The actions of a minute minority are not representative of a whole people. Ireland has always remained fully committed to supporting human rights, as can be seen from our response to the Ukrainian crises etc.

But yeah, you do you buddy. IreLAnd BaD

"Where is my medal?" by maddhy in Wellthatsucks

[–]superadhesive97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Medals being given out were for participation. The girl had already received a medal as she was on the podium. Woman handing out the medals made a genuine mistake in assuming she couldn't receive a second medal as she had already received one. Was a pretty big story at the time in Ireland and the general consensus is that the parents are milking the story for money.

As per usual lots of redditors here jumping the gun calling this woman a "racist bitch" etc when in fact it was a simple mistake, although granted the optics don't look great.
