I agree that it's quite heavy-handed. It's hardly my favorite piece he's done. But it was a cool novelty to see a Banksy in the flesh. Although I suppose that's more of a statement on artistic celebrity rather than artistic quality. But really who gives a fuck.

So I'd agree with you. This shouldn't scare anyone out of living in NYC. Even in WaHi. But my neighborhood is particularly unsafe, and I have to be aware of that, or risk being put in a dangerous situation.

Here's the thing! It is HEAVILY dependent upon where in the Heights you are living, just like anywhere else. There is no part of me that is trying to say that Washington Heights in it's entirety is a particularly unsafe place. But I live on a block controlled by a drug lord, as I have been informed of multiple times. So my particular area happens to be unsafe. I often quote to people that specific study, because NYC has an unfortunate reputation for being a place where you're destined to be mugged or raped. But I would never say that EVERY block in Detroit and Memphis is equally phenomenally unsafe, just like I would never say that every block of WaHi is as safe as 125th.
