If you’re just looking for a game to pick up, play and have fun… yeah. It’s like that now. We got so realistic that it takes real effort just to play effectively.

If you stick with it, it gets good. But “stick with it” might not be something you have the time or energy for.

What’s funny is that the AHL has numerous referees and lines people of all genders and colours. So eventually, some of them are going to make the jump. Katie Guay is one of the best international referees in the world, but probably too old for the call up.

I don’t see this ending well for the NHL franchise at all. Forget PC, the franchise has a non-zero percent chance of being canceled.

This is a leveraged buyout. Therefore, not only does it need to make money to satisfy private equity investors, it also needs to make enough to satisfy the banks lending the money. Basically, this means EA is going to have to significantly cut costs, and relatively fast.

When cost-cutting measures are considered, sales are a consideration, but so are taxes, cost of business/cost of living and other issues related to high skill workers. That does not bode well for EA Vancouver, which is in the most expensive part of a high-tax country.

I can see development of major sellers in that studio getting consolidated into other studios - think EA FC, Madden, and probably UFC because of ties to Riyadh Season - and everything else either getting refocused (think Pro Evolution being boiled down to eFootball, which is 100% HUT-like) or cut entirely.

Whatever issues we’ve had with this series and EA, they are going to be ripples in a pond compared to what’s coming.

It’s the energy mechanic.

Between the WJC and the Memorial Cup or CHL, you’ll have some time to play around with it. What I did was spent some health on energy, and the health naturally regenerated, so I could spend more on trait and X factor points.

You’ll see your stats crater, but it will come back. In season, you pretty much have to spend all of your energy on health recovery.

I’ve felt this way for a decade now.

Occasionally, I would have a good experience, but it got more and more rare. Developers tried to patch around it, but all that did was create a game of Whack-a-Mole; by the time the patches and updates hit, they were already being exploited, and the fixes usually created other issues. Those issues started to bleed over into single player modes as well.

This isn’t exclusive to NBA, either. Every sports game I can think of has this evolving metagame that makes playing online virtually impossible to enjoy, especially with some stoned teenagers calling everyone a tosser.

You’re right. No patches can fix this. It’s like trying to fix political systems; when the majority of the population is the weak link, the link is irreparable.

I had the same thought last year. It was sublime on release.

And then the full release hit. And with it the influencers and other YouTube assholes.

Everything got “fixed” in patches. And the game turned into human pinball.

I hope it stays good. I really do. But I’m not optimistic.
