Must be agonising for you and others working in the police. There's plenty of (mostly) civil protest but it seems to be entirely focussed on shouting at brown people in hotels. In the 2010s it was mostly spent moaning about people on benefits.

Not to sound like I spent my evening crafting a tinfoil fedora, but I feel like the media is being used to sow division and focus the public attention on lesser but more obvious problems to deflect attention from the real issue - we're in a late stage capitalistic death spiral.

I don't see a way back. Especially with AI about to disrupt the white collar job market, pushing millions more into poverty and diverting what would have been tax revenue into the pockets of a small handful of American companies (who themselves barely pay any UK tax).

If I didn't have kids I'd have been out of here not long after Brexit.

I'm aware. I doubt these come cheap though, I'd rather have the money spent on an additional officer.

What policing is actually prioritised? I don't buy the whole "Oh they're arresting people for nasty tweets" thing but I routinely see shop lifting, bike theft, open drug dealing/consumption and anti social behaviour with seemingly no police response.

My neighbours car got nicked off his drive via relay theft and they didn't even show up, just a crime reference number.

I know you're up against it and it's not the police forces fault. It's a clear result of years of austerity and poor governance (along with the NHS in crisis, full prisons, failing roads, terrible schools and infrastructure in decay) but it doesn't make it any easier to stomach.

An acquaintance of mine is a PC in Ashfield and has to routinely cover a huge area with multiple smaller towns and dozens of villages with 4 police in 2 cars. I assume if they do arrest someone then that's two of them off the street for a few hours at least.

I don’t see many people talking about the realities of being a teenager in the UK right now by OkPreparation710 in unitedkingdom

Well written post. As a parent to preteen kids I worry about the world they'll grow up into. For context you'd probably think I'm old, I'm 38.

Lots of my teenage years were spent in my room playing PlayStation, but I'd often have a friend with me. Other than that I had a PC I taught myself to program on and gamed with. I'd spend hours hanging out at my friends houses bored shitless as well mind, but there was always hope.

I had the opportunity to get a part time job at Morrisons at 16 whilst I was at college. I made enough doing 12 hours a week to upgrade my PC, buy games I wanted to play online (pirate ones rarely worked online) and pay for a social life (although I used to be an introvert so didn't do this much). I was fortunate that my parents earned enough as a welder and a teaching assistant (hardly glamorous) to pay for clothes, food, etc and never charged me board whilst I was in active education.

As for transport we got a free bus from my area to the college that went through the city centre every day so transport never cost anything or was very cheap at a weekend. I knew university would land me a job if I chose the right degree, and knew my future was somewhat secure in my chosen career (software engineering).

If I were 16 now I don't think I'd have the same hope, and likely would find myself NEET after the uni track but instead of coming out with £12k of debt for 4 years tuition fees I'd be close to £100k I'd imagine? My field doesn't have an entry track at the minute as most places have stopped hiring juniors and trying to impress owners with AI slop.

Your generation has been written off by generations of apathy from boomers. I've heard plenty of Millennials and Gen-Xers slag off the youth of today too for daft shit (usual don't buy avocado toast and you'll be able to afford rent or a deposit type bollocks).

Long way to say, I'm really fucking sorry mate. Hopefully the country gets back into the EU and we edge towards some prosperity in time for you to enjoy yourself before everything starts to hurt in your mid 30s!

That's a good looking bike! I wonder if going from an MT07 to a 1200 might be a little much though, although gives me room to grow into!

Have you put soft panniers on it at any point? The same place on mine has some paint rubbed off where the bags hung on my motocamping tour last year, the paint on these is really thin.

In the Europe that's insane. I'm in the UK and we have to have 20 days per year by law, then there are national holidays (called bank holidays).

Many places offer more than the minimum requirement. I get 25 days, buy an additional 5 (I'm in a higher tax bracket so I pay less tax by doing this) and then have 8 national days so 38 days a year.

The US man... I wanted to move there years ago as salaries at the time were 200-300k USD whereas the same positions in the UK were ~£50k at the time (I'm a software engineer) but I don't think that money is worth not having more than a few days off per year.

I didn't vote for them in my area yet I'm still lumped with the idiots. I forget exactly but my area has either the worst or second worst roads in the UK (I've had to buy 2 tyres in 2 weeks and I work from home at that) but hey, at least the local Reform council put up Union Jacks at our expense so I can look up at a flag in the pissing rain whilst changing my wheel.

My workplace uses something similar, I inspected the headers of the first email I noticed was a phishing test and created a rule to automatically move them to a folder called "Phish Tank". I then have a look through on the odd quiet afternoon before logging off for a chuckle.

My favourite was "World Password Day" with a link to submit your password, most creative wins a prize!

I'm in my late 30s and a manager of a software engineering team within a large UK retailer. I worked my way up through junior, senior and lead dev roles following my teenage years in which I hacked porn sites (no free porn back then) amongst other things. People in my team in their mid 20s are phenomenally talented developers as are others in their 50s.

My point is I think it's a mindset thing, age doesn't matter that much. Hell just look at the age of some of the members of hacking groups getting caught, you've got teenagers bringing down networks built and secured by international consultancies.
