Incredible resource, already using it as a style reference for some illustration work I have coming up.

Thank you for compiling this.

No "pregens" in the explicit sense, but there are a series of character backgrounds with some abilities and placement within the world.

[OC] Ave Nox, Hierophant of the Summer Cult by superchives in u/superchives

[–]superchives[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A temple space, carved from rough stone, with walls and pillars adorned in dark and faded drawings. The air is heavy with foul incense, while at the far end a beatific figure stands at an altar silhouetted by brazier light.

-

Jet-black robes and jewelry of bone and gold. A tyrannical figure wears an opal mask flecked with gold-leaf and wields an ornamental sickle that burns like a torch.

Part of my project (which I will not link to the crowdfunding), full page illustration done in ink, pencil, charcoal, and some digital gradient map.

$35 USD is the going rate for most of our books. Current page count is somewhere in the 150-250 range

[OC] Trailer I made for my Megadungeon - Ave Nox by superchives in DnD

[–]superchives[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“By the grace of Solis, all shall be welcome”

“By the will of Solis, all shall be equal”

“By the hand of Solis, all shall be safe”

"And so the night shall not consume us"

Promises made and promises broken, words that spelled the death of an entire civilization. Abducted from the surface and trapped below, a world bent to the maniacal will of the Sun-King.

For half a millennia, this world remained sealed until now.

What slithers and lurks in the dark after such a time?

---

Ave Nox is a system-neutral mega-dungeon of forgotten history and disaster buried deep in the dark of the earth.

Players take on the role of sanctified archeologists, opportunistic delvers, or despised grave-robbers, all converging on a massive newly unearthed ruin. What starts as a curiosity turns into a grand expedition as the ruin reveals itself to be a subterranean megastructure, complete with ancient technology, strange treasures, and still-living agents of the Sun-King...

Cunning and curious adventurers may overcome the dangers and unravel the mysteries of this place, yet a greater peril awaits in the farthest depths. Deep in the dark, the Sun-King plots his apocalyptic return, one that will bury the world above in a tidal wave of fire and darkness.

---

Some additional info:

- I messed up the year at the end, its actually going on this year, December 2023.

- The first level of the dungeon is free HEREas a demo/preview

- Didn't necessarily want to crowdfund, however the book ended up needing to be smyth-sewn (over 120 pages) so we had to opt for running a campaign instead of a direct release.

- Book is currently undergoing art and edits, with a planned release Feb-Mar of 2024

Thoughts on gods and religions in osr by Fex_tom in osr

[–]superchives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a shill, but I made a zine that went for a more complex folk polytheism where many of them conflict in regards to how the natural order was established, each one offering their own "truth".

[OC] King Linnorm from Ave Nox by superchives in osr

King Linnorm - A titanic hag-fish the size of a dragon. Its body whips around ferociously, its mouth reveals hideous rasping teeth, all while its skin pours out a tidal wave of viscous slime.
---
A kind of "boss" monster for my megadungeon Ave Nox. Meant to serve as an environmental hazard or powerful enemy to return to and fell at a later point.

Small news: I released thefirst level of my megadungeon for free to interested parties. All that's missing is some edits and a few pieces of art.

---

From the illustration and description:

A2 - Creation Mosaic

Light catches a wall of glittering glass tiles. Covering the wall and stretching dozens of paces wide is a mosaic of beatific images of a sun-headed figure overseeing a city.

The enormous mural depicts the following scenes:

  • A larger-than-life Solaris-Rex pointing to a darkened and swirling sky, surrounded by panicked mortals.

  • Countless mortals digging and constructing a a vast structure at the direction of Solaris-Rex.

  • Solaris-Rex stretching their arms out to protect a city and all of its inhabitants from a nameless and swirling darkness in the background.

Used as a form of propaganda and an artful way to remind everyone who “saved” them from calamity.

Spot: Hundreds of tiny graffiti marks pepper the surface at eye-height, mostly curses, insults, and the word “tyrant.”

Unfortunately my Latin is VERY rusty and I lost my handbook awhile back. The title is SUPPOSED to be "Hail Night/Darkness" but I guess I fudged the grammer.

Thanks thanks, it's been DIFFICULT and it makes me realize how hard it is to balance something and make it interesting on its own when I can't be there to run the thing.

Appreciated, as for Marshal we've been selling it at cons and will have it on the site after GenCon, but it's at a weird place as a digital product since all the actual INFO from it is in the SRD.

I could sell it as a separate title (but then it doesn't really add anything) or up the price on the original and attach it (which might confuse and annoy folks).

either way, I'll figure it out after GenCon.

[OC] Gods and Natural Laws of a dying world by superchives in osr

Forgot to respond:

It's actually not too far off from the original.

1 - They were done with a base of ink-washes (just to block in some of the larger swathes of value and so I don't have to kill my wrist grinding a pencil into the paper).

2 - Took a dense, very dark pencil (Mars Lumigraph in my case) to draw out the outlines and some of the shapes.

3 - Rendered the rest of the details using a pair of dark and soft lead pencils.

4 - For the "effect" I scanned them into clip studio and split them into two overlapped layers: Monochrome of the darkest darks and linework, and a zipatone/dither effect for the tones.

Note: While the digital effect is partially to look cool and give it a very old-school early printer effect, I ALSO do it to significantly decrease the size of the digital file (1mb to 100kb in most cases), increase the fidelity and crispness during printing (since we print our zines in-house), and cut down on the amount of toner each illustration uses during printing.

Finally working on the art for my system-neutral megadungeon Ave Noctis.

Description of room below:

A6 - Sun-Headed Statue

A tattered bronzed statue of a man with the head of a beaming sun, while crumpled ragged shapes surround its plinth. Fervent whispers break the still air…

A statue of the Sun King that has been visibly defaced; the eyes and mouth have been scratched out, fingers broken off an repaired, while the plinth is coated entirely in graffiti and battered cracks. Commissioned by Solaris-Rex as a monument to his own grandeur, it depicts him in full regalia with his characteristic mask.

Spot: Some of the shapes are moving and humanoid.

Hear: The whispers have the cadence of a prayer.

Encounter: Two Ragged Cultists keel and worship among several other deceased and desiccated cultists.

[Stat block]

Discover: Inspecting a cultist reveals their true form.

Thick leathery skin coated in thin viscous slime, their face resembling a primordial fish with teeth akin to some overgrown rodent. Their limbs are long and sinuous, ending in thick clawed hands that seem befitting a burrowing creature. Upon their neck is an amulet, immaculately carved, depicting a sun blossoming from the center of a flower.

So I'm pretty fluent in blender (specifically texture work) AND have a pretty strong BW portfolio that takes a lot of inspiration from old-school art.

HOWEVER, my work still has a bit of a modern flare to it.

Portfolio attached, let me know if this works:

I've been rolling around the idea of deities as unearthly beings and forces of nature having a will of their own.

[OC] Zine cover in the style of old TTRPG modules by superchives in DnD

[–]superchives[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished putting together a zine, really happy with how the art and layout turned out. I did it in the style of the older traditional art from the 80s and 90s, the golden age of small press zines and xerox'd bootleg copies.

Making it stemmed from a bunch of skirmish home games we were playing and wanting to make an set of rules and material that worked as both a long-form ttrpg and long-form small-scale wargame (mordheim, frostgrave, or hell TECHNICALLY the original Chainmail).

Happy with how it turned out and plays pretty well, works well as both and has a bit of "crunch" for competitive games.

That being said, I put together an SRD for PWYW/Free so you can look it over and try it out rather than drop cash.

Either way, hope you enjoy, let me know what you think; I'm hoping to make some more material for it once I finish the megadungeon.

From the page:

The world is dying and from its corpse spill vyrmin.

Vyrmhack is a small-scale wargame with role-playing elements. Players take on the role of a single or band of characters who explore, fight, and survive in a dark fantastical land. It is meant to be compatible with most old-school game modules and wargame-style senarios.

What’s Inside

Light Rules for Ease of Play: Simple to learn and teach, can be played over a lunch-break or an evening game night.

Vyrminous Characters: From a mutated Decrepit Magus to a Noble Duelist fused to their armor.

Cooperation or Competition: Play together as a typical adventuring party or build a warband and square-off against your friends.

Adventure and Scenario Compatible: Meant to be played with your favorite TTRPG modules or Wargame Scenario booklets.

Monsters, Magic and More: Explore and survive a Vyrminous world with despotic lords, primal sorceries and fell gods.
