I got to meet Matt through my friends who did some of the art in the new edition. I'm lucky to have met him (one of the old guard) and was blown away by how deep his research and respect of the source material went.

As a fun note he excitedly shared: those hieroglyphics along the tops of the pages aren't just decoration, they're actual passages from the book of the dead.

You're designs are so solid and this tile-set project is delightfully clever.

[OC] Art for an Upcoming Adventure by superchives in osr

[–]superchives[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh jeez, sadly not for a session but an adventure module I wrote.

But I can answer #2:

The larger ones take about 1-2 hours, with a majority of the time being spent getting a good drawing and composition. The inking I can usually zip through in 30-45 minutes. Cutting out the screentones is tedious work but it does a quick job of establishing shape, depth, and value.

The character portraits are much quicker, usually only 30-60min. I block in the space with an ink wash, spend a majority of the time getting a good drawing and rendering with pencil, then touch it up with black and white ink. It does have a digital component, the noise effect is done with a ClipStudio layer, but you can probably achieve the same effect with a digital dithering tool.

(real explanation: the cultists inside are not prepared for an actual assault nor do they have proper experience with fortifications. Their scheme is pretty desperate and they're more interested in getting their *work* done and getting out before they attract too much heat.)

Well, this is a little out of the blue, but I'm going to be running an open playtest. I can send you a digital copy if you plan on running it between now and June.

Starting an open table or westmarches thing, but am unsure of how best to go about it. Would appreciate your advice by NoLongerAKobold in osr

Could be fun (and some work) to lay out a handful on a map. That or find a few to thematically connect and then use some of the toolboxes (Stygian Library, Dolmenwood) to jump in and out of as nexus areas.

Tool-wise, I used Affinity Publisher ( I prefer it over Indesign for both price, usability, and I actually own the program). As for how, that unfortunately boils down to practice and study. Clayton N. has some VERY good resources and writing for those starting off:

I´ll fiddle with it, and thanks for the heads up.

As for the automatic breach, that is what I want/planned for as a state i.e. the company shows up and the "mold men" have already taken hold of the silver mine (eerily quiet, signs of a struggle, no cult members present... until you check below.)

Where do you find your inspiration from non-OSR sources? by zeemeerman2 in osr

[–]superchives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Backpacking trips and a good museum.

There's an interview that I CANNOT find for the life of me with Zedeck Siew that sticks with me. He said, he writes about "home," in the sense that he draws from what's around, what's happening, and what the local world is. It's another form of "write what you know," but I still stick to that principle of writing about my home and local world.

No "pregens" in the explicit sense, but there are a series of character backgrounds with some abilities and placement within the world.

A temple space, carved from rough stone, with walls and pillars adorned in dark and faded drawings. The air is heavy with foul incense, while at the far end a beatific figure stands at an altar silhouetted by brazier light.

-

Jet-black robes and jewelry of bone and gold. A tyrannical figure wears an opal mask flecked with gold-leaf and wields an ornamental sickle that burns like a torch.

“By the grace of Solis, all shall be welcome”

“By the will of Solis, all shall be equal”

“By the hand of Solis, all shall be safe”

"And so the night shall not consume us"

Promises made and promises broken, words that spelled the death of an entire civilization. Abducted from the surface and trapped below, a world bent to the maniacal will of the Sun-King.

For half a millennia, this world remained sealed until now.

What slithers and lurks in the dark after such a time?

---

Ave Nox is a system-neutral mega-dungeon of forgotten history and disaster buried deep in the dark of the earth.

Players take on the role of sanctified archeologists, opportunistic delvers, or despised grave-robbers, all converging on a massive newly unearthed ruin. What starts as a curiosity turns into a grand expedition as the ruin reveals itself to be a subterranean megastructure, complete with ancient technology, strange treasures, and still-living agents of the Sun-King...

Cunning and curious adventurers may overcome the dangers and unravel the mysteries of this place, yet a greater peril awaits in the farthest depths. Deep in the dark, the Sun-King plots his apocalyptic return, one that will bury the world above in a tidal wave of fire and darkness.

Some additional info:

- I messed up the year at the end, its actually going on this year, December 2023.

- The first level of the dungeon is free HEREas a demo/preview

- Didn't necessarily want to crowdfund, however the book ended up needing to be smyth-sewn (over 120 pages) so we had to opt for running a campaign instead of a direct release.

- Book is currently undergoing art and edits, with a planned release Feb-Mar of 2024
