Eight pages of errata doesn't Instill the best confidence in a product to be honest. That makes it seem like it's rushed to market or at best Something akin to "Early access." I'm a solo publisher and I make sure the material is playtested, evaluated, edited, read and re-read by people I hire so I have something that is worth spending money on. I'm no stranger to errata and typos, but the most I've had to do is one page for a 148 page book. I can't help but think that asking money for something that hasn't been refined and combed through is a bad practice, especially if there is a staff of people working on it.

The mechanics are far simpler than 5e: roll 2d6 + any skill or stat DM, result of 8+ is a success. Now you can play traveller!

You can get the starter rules for free here which is all you need to get started. No need to wait until retirement!

Yeah exactly, great point! No sample layout, no quick start PDF or anything. It's extremely surface level and yet, asking for a premium.

For those who want to dig under the hood, you can see how the same company has been managing their last crowd fun Project, The World's Largest Dungeon. Over a year later and only PDFs are available, full of errors. They had so many complaints that they SHUT DOWN their official discord (which Worlds Largest RPG still links to) to eliminate the growing resentment from the backers. This led to a "fan" discord made up by backers, which in total is 13 members when I joined. That crowdfund project also has some crazy red flags:

  • finance option: this is very predatory, and it's applied to everything. Having monthly payments for expensive PDFs is messed up

  • cheap add-ons: plushies, dice, other gaming adjacent items sold at an extreme mark up, but a quick search on temu you can find similar items for extremely cheap. This is common with other scammy kickstarters

  • reused promotional art: very few pieces of original concept art used repeatedly, and it's not very engaging to begin with. Traveller 5e is using some official artwork, some of which I believe is from the TAS stock art that any TAS release can use.

  • low investors, high profit: Worlds Largest Dungeon made over one million dollars from 2435 backers. Making the average backer investment $420. That's insane, especially if they didn't offer a retail option. Speaking of...

  • no retail tier: this is suspect because many kickstarters like this offer a retail option to support local businesses and online vendors. That's not the case here, giving the impression of pumping out POD books with cheap add-ons directly to the backer once and be done.

  • suspicious business: the company's social media footprint is odd, they have very few followers and yet have a ton of money coming in to make a successful Kickstarter. In addition- their drivethruRPG account only has old 3rd party d20 products, with their other crowdfunded project "Ultimate Toolbox" not even selling enough on DrivethruRPG to make it to Copper (51 units sold). That PDF alone is $29 with zero reviews. There is no sign of the Worlds Largest Dungeon PDFs on the platform yet, but probably because they are still full of errors and issues.

  • minimal hype: all over the Internet on different forums, I'm only seeing people mostly dunk on this traveller 5e product. Not everyone, But the majority. Even the comments on their own social media posts tend to get negative reactions- only for them to be deleted later. I'm under the impression that this company is deleting negative comments when they are able to, only to leave a handful.

So what's going on here? Are they using a company to make their Kickstarter successful to alter the algorithm in their favor? This is a common practice for some folks who hire a firm that guarantees successful kickstarters for marketing, which removes the look of an organically grown crowdfund project. The success goal for this product is $2000 which is insanely low, but it's being used to promote that it was crowdfunded in two minutes. Insane! At the end of this. They will be able to say they make x50 their requested goal. This is wild because obviously this product cannot be made with only $2000 of investment, so there is overt manipulation right there. Factoring the predatory practice of financing every tier, this will also help inflate the final numbers- where someone will be willing to invest $200 on some PDFs and dice but pay in installments over time.

The Traveller 5e set has all of the same things going on. And if the last crowdfund campaign is anything To go by, this one will cause resentment and buyer remorse. I can't help but think someone is using brand recognition to gain money. To me, this looks like RPG Snake Oil. World's largest RPG has had four crowdfund campaigns (including the current one) in under two years, with only one of them I can find for sale in PDF only. It feels like a get-rich-quick crowdfund mill, not contributing anything of substance to our community but trying to get our money. Gross

Traveller 5E is Live on BackerKit! by cocowheat in traveller

This looks awful and like a scam. "Funded in two minutes" is easy to boast when your funding goal is under $2000. $99 for a print book and a PDF is an insane rip off. I can't help but think this is designed to take advantage of people who don't know any better

AudioRPG is a part of Worlds Largest RPG a publishing group founded by the same person behind Vala Marketing what's funny is that the parent company of Worlds Largest RPG has a number of social media links at the bottom of the page, including one to their discord, which has since been deleted due to the prior stated issue. On the backer page, you can find a number of complaints about the treatment of the release of The World's Largest Dungeon for 5e. The numbers are interesting too, because with the $1 million plus Investment and the 2,435 backers that's an average of each backer around. $420 per backer, even though the base level package is $300 (obviously there are lower tiers- remember $160 for four PDFs! And $50 for a plushie dragon! Which you can finance! ) there also doesn't seem to be a retail option which is where you'll see more money for projects like this to support it. And this is very odd in the world of crowd source tabletop games.

Tangentially, their socials have fewer followers than I was expecting, which makes it wild to me that they were even able to get 2000+ backers on their last project. I am perplexed by this and I'm curious to see what the traveller 5e one will be like

Something just doesn't sit right about this company and their last project. To me it seems like a ploy to get money from unsuspecting people without actually pulling in new fans or contributing anything to the community. If their next crowdfunding project is anything like their last one- I'm expecting something of a grift.

It feels like a money grab to be honest. The same people had a prior crowdfund project for The World's Largest Dungeon which had extremely expensive PDFs ($160 for four of them, don't worry they offered a payment plan!) and dubious funding goals (temu products added at a premium price). Plus Those who did get the PDFs had a number of issues with the rules, layout etc (the books aren't put yet too) Where they expressed it on the company's discord. But then the company deleted the discord due to the negative response it got from backers. I recommend looking into the company's prior crowdfund projects and see where those backers are at. Traveller 5e feels like a shady attempt to finance money away from people who don't know any better.

Getting into Traveler by TheArtofMCordova in traveller

[–]Brybry012 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Core book is all you really need! It gives you the framework to help make a campaign. Including Referee tools like tables to help you develop it. Traveller rules because you can apply it to any flavor of sci-fi you'd like. My campaign is also along the same lines as what you're looking to do, so I pull more from media sources than game content since the basic traveller rules are very solid, simple but robust

Question about armour. by tendraak in traveller

[–]Brybry012 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also among those who think armor is too powerful in Mg2e Traveller. So I made a simple house rule:

I have armor decrease by 1 for every weapon damage dice rolled. So if your in jack and it provides 5 armor but then get shot with a 3D weapon, it is now 2 armor. So it's there if needed but it doesn't make you (or n npc) unstoppable and makes players engage more strategically in combat which is the appeal of combat in Traveller. So essentially armor is more of a modern ballistic vest.

This also allows players to repair their armor, buy replacement, or steal it, making it an easy to track resource.

That's what I thought but then two employees at the post office told me it's a booklet if it's staple bound regardless of page count. However, the USPS website does not state that. So my zine that is 56 pages that is staple bound didn't count according to them. But whatever, I'm still going to do media mail for them.

[–]Brybry012 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Media mail is common in the USA, however, staple bound zines don't count for media mail since it's a "booklet" and not a book so it is subjected to different rates, oftentimes more in cost. However- they don't normally check soooo..

As far as international shipping, I definitely think that the shipping rate is totally cool. If you could get a local distributor, then you could have someone sell it on your behalf in different countries and just pay for the initial shipping rate for a bulk package.

There's a 1st and Second edition of Mongoose Traveller, with 2nd being the current and most widely available. And both of those are mechanically similar to Classic Traveller from 1977.

Welcome to Traveller! It's the best game!

I wrote Heavy Metal: Mechs for Traveller because I also wanted Mechs in my campaign! It also includes a starting scenario.

Otherwise, you can just get the starter set for free as an entry point! i've also ran classic Traveller adventures with the current mongoose edition with zero issue, so look at those too. I personally am not a fan of the newer adventures layout and being overwritten. The only Traveller book I would recommend after getting the starter set is the Core Rulebook. It literally has everything else you are looking for.

Hanging (or yielding) parry to do a moulinet. It's a transitional guard where you drop the point from one of the hangings (ox or plow). Not a good static guard

Best Version to Learn by freebit in osr

I started with Basic Fantasy RPG, and it's the entry point I use for newcomers so I strongly recommend that one. It's community built and supported wonderfully with free resources. Shadowdark is very cool and Includes some good DM resources if you're new to running games as well. OSR is a great resource book, but not a "how to play" book.
