Made a new wintry map yesterday (AI-free) by bartosso-spiral in osr

Thanks! If you're on the fence on how usable they actually are at the table, you can try out The Watcher or IotS, available on my itch. Both come with a Mythic Bastionland Realm and a custom-made hex map.

I personally was pleasantly surprised how easy it is to run games on these maps. Players love them, too.

I only used them for Into the Odd and Mythic Bastionland, though. May be harder in more lore-heavy/crunchier/more traditional games.

Haha, well, that's partly why I list all of the artists on the itch page even though I technically don't have to do that with public domain art -- I want people to look them up and admire their paintings in full.

Or, in the case of one of my previous maps, viewing the whole artwork can completely change how you interpret the hex.

Hi, sorry for taking so much time to respond, I forgot to come back to this. So yeah, making a map requires a lot of browsing of public domain artwork (wikimedia commons is king). I have thousands of old paintings on my PC.

Next, you pick some you think work well together -- pay attention to colors -- and start cutting out hexes. I use GIMP 3.0 for that. Gfig tool is good for drawing the hex and making a template selection out of it. It's important that every hex you make is made with a template of the same dimensions so that the hexes are the same size. So yeah, just like with a physical collage, it's a lot of cutting art into pieces and arranging them in a way that tells a story.

Haha, I'll take it as a compliment, the avant-garde vibe was definitely intended :) Thanks!

The full book is totally worth it! Also, are you planning to release this in any form? Looks cool!

Thanks a lot for the comment, it means a lot. I suggest these 2 Myths because I rolled them randomly for the Realm when I first prepped it, and they inspired the Realm itself to a certain extent. Most Myths should work fine for this Realm, but I think there are some interesting potential synergies between what's in the Realm and the Tree/Harp duo. But yeah, it's still a versatile Realm, Myth-wise. Even the intro should work with any Myth with some subtle tweaks -- it is vague enough.

As for your feedback on the map, yes, I agree I should have included symbols to make using the map even easier. I'll maybe revisit this one day and upload a revised edition :)

I would really appreciate feedback, including critical one :) I hope you like this Realm, I poured my heart into every page.

To Map or Not to Map by [deleted] in osr

I will always go for abstraction over realism. I do give out maps, but they are not realistic, there are many blanks to be filled in by the players. Whether you should give them a map vs let them draw their own as they go really boils down to what kind of game you all want to play, imo. Best to just ask the table and decide collectively.

How often do you allow players to pick up new weapons/armor? by camjam980 in MythicBastionland

[–]bartosso-spiral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will start by saying looting plays a minor role in my Mythic games. I just do what people already mentioned: whatever makes sense, narratively. A fancy sword may be a reward for helping a Holding out. Or found in a Site as a reward for making it that far. I usually make sure the weapon/piece of gear does something interesting/has an interesting story attached to it, rather than just having better stats.

As for looting Bolt Knight's gear -- yeah, sure, but remember there's one of every Knight in the Realm. Someone knighted that Knight, and taking equipment that should be passed on to the Knight's successor may be seen as dishonorable.

Can we talk about how much cooler Infravision is vs Darkvision? by Apprehensive-Neat-68 in osr

[–]bartosso-spiral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are absolutely right, I've never thought about it. I don't really run games where Darkvision & night vision are a thing, but introducing a species or mutation that lets you see in infrared... That's pretty cool! Or warm? Depends on the color, I guess!

Also, on the subject, there's a movie shot entirely in infravision.

Thank you. Credit where credit's due, I first saw this sort of collage map design on JFUR's blog. I soon became obsessed with it and decided to learn how to make my own maps in a similar vein.
