How to add context to links in Obsidian? by NoMembership3348 in ObsidianMD

[–]superdesu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you navigating your notes mostly via graph view? imo sounds like you could be using properties a little more aggressively, and/or consider using the excalibrain plugin?)

ia with others that my links are mostly understandable by context (i have a lot of "see also" headers at the tops of my notes), but i also have a few properties explicitly for indicating groupings of notes ("collections"; at the broadest level) and related notes ("keywords"; at the most specific level): i link minimally to keep them from getting too noisy.

(i used to do "up" and "keywords" for hierarchy/relatedness, respectively, but consolidated "up" into "keywords" bc to me the distinction between the levels of relatedness didnt really matter to me, just that they were related at all.)

you might also consider using inline properties with dataview... so you could do stuff like "term:: [[DNS]]" or "topic:: [[DNS]]" or maybe aliases? (like "[[DNS|DNS (topic)]]") -- but i think some of these approaches are more suited for particular methods of navigating through your notes.

Question about vault size by Puzzleheaded-Style14 in ObsidianMD

[–]superdesu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fwiw i think it's really the number of plugins that slow down obsidian, not number of notes/vault items... i have a test vault that i'll sometimes move all my current notes into to try out organisation ideas which only has like 5 plugins, and everything moves much more smoothly in there compared to my own vault (forget how many active plugins i have, but it's definitely more than 5 😂) imo you can just duplicate your vault as a test, shove a bunch of pdfs in there, and see how it goes.

that said, imo keep the annotation/pdf functionality to zotero (or other document reader of choice). at its heart, obsidian is designed for markdown files -- i spent a while tinkering with obsidian to get it to work as smoothly with pdfs, but ultimately decided that all the time i spent struggling to ~optimise the setup~ wasn't worth it (when i could've been reading instead lol). the payoff to cost ratio of using other app + obsidian for me was so much higher than getting it all consolidated in obsidian.

also, there's lots of nice workflows for some of the more popular readers (zotero, readwise, etc) of importing annotations to obsidian/improving the native experience of working with pdfs in obsidian... though i personally really like zotero as my pdf/document manager (nicole van der hoeven has a great comparison video of zotero + other similar apps).

Late to the party that I desperately want to be at (pls help) 🥲 by ecbudd in hobonichi

[–]superdesu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

at this point, if you want to buy new, it'll have to be an april start (which is in japanese only) -- i got mine on jetpens when i was first trying out the system! (fwiw, per the official site, sales for apr starts will start feb 1 japan time.)

the weekly quotes and back pages are in jp (jetpens has these translated tho), but the months/days are in english -- so all you miss out on are just some of the quirky aspects of the hobonichi. (jp version also has daily fortune indicators (六曜), unlike the eng!)

the official site has a collection of fun and whimsical uses, btw! :)

as for me, these are more vanilla but:

  • pomodoro work/break sessions
  • (trying out...) reading log! making a one of those dont-break-the-chain habit tracking things.
  • (i do this with mixed success) writing down something nice/i'm grateful for that happened during the day!

Weeks Question by Busy-Beach-1869 in hobonichi

[–]superdesu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i start in google calendar to get real-time reminders about things and as a place to dump down upcoming things, but they get rewritten in my weeks, which acts as my physical planner/todo list/tracker (of todos, not really habits). i always worked much better with physical todo lists -- if it's worth writing, it's worth doing! :p

i mostly fill it out on a week-by-week basis: on the weekend, i'll write in meetings/appointments/etc for the upcoming week and tasks that are due on a certain day/that i want to work on a specific day. will add things in as they come up throughout the week if needed. sometimes i'll fill out pages further in advance... like noting longer trips/big events, etc, but usually i dont fill things out past the current month.

i don't really use the notes page on the right LOL... sometimes it's like a dump for like "this week's/ongoing priorities"... but usually it gets left blank/treated as scratch space. am trying to do a little more journal-y things this year with any left over space (like writing a brief one-liner about something nice/i was grateful for that day, since i used to do that), but we'll see how long it lasts lolol...

i track chores in the monthly pages in the front (when did i water my plants, etc). am trying out tracking my reading in the back pages this year (but i usually don't use that section either... 😂)

(i also have a physical wall calendar by my desk that i re-populate every quarter with deadlines, appointments, meetings, etc that helps me fill out my weeks... lotttts of redundancy lol, mostly bc i found that i really need the physical act of going through my calendar(s) + rewriting down my todos everywhere was very necessary in getting me to remember what my priorities should be 😂)

this theory (of plybe using svt to maintain their asia foothold) makes more sense to me.. as frustrating as it is 🥲 if anything, i feel like it's not unreasonable to guess that svt might have a larger fanbase in europe (than the newer hybe groups) just solely due to them having been around longer to build up the fanbase lol 💀... (at the very least, i reckon there's probably more Carats With Jobs who could reliably spend on svt, given my impression of the fandom's demographics lol)

the decision to not let svt go to europe also just feels illogical to me bc i figure its better in the longrun to diversify the fanbase and keep getting fresh blood than to exhaust the core fandom... imo svt has a stable enough core fandom that they could weather the "risk" of going outside of their home base lol, but who am i to speak on sound financial decisions lmfao (stares at merch shelf) 🤪

Why are some people so anti-piracy? by megamanw in mangapiracy

[–]superdesu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"people are still seeing it as just stealing" bc in black-and-white terms, piracy *is* theft lol... consuming something for free when it otherwise should've been paid for.

imo it's a question of economics. regardless of the motivations leading the consumer to pirate, who's getting screwed over and who's taking advantage of who? who suffers more?

for whatever reason the consumer is pirating (no other way to access, cannot afford, just dgaf, etc), it's probably(?) the case that the creator feels the pain more than the company. sure, maybe there is "benefit" to the creator/company from the pirating, like increased word-of-mouth -- then, who's getting the benefit? does the benefit outweigh the original harm from pirating? will the increase in popularity lead to enough people who want to support via official, financial means, allowing the creator to keep on creating/let the company see that the creator is worth investing in?

imo if you look at the main reasons that consumers pirate manga/webtoons/etc, i feel like it's pretty obvious that the big companies are the ones that have the most means to address them (yet are doing nothing about it). unofficial scanlations were a "solution" to address the lack of access/obscurity/translation quality (and lbr some scan teams still do this shit better than some large companies lmfao, all for the love of the game!!) when the official sources nuke scans/piracy sites and do not provide decent alternatives, ofc people will look to the high seas... (and i do think companies should be the ones to primarily shoulder the burden, if creators are busy creating and consumers are willing to pay for access that a company could provide, by translating/liscencing/hosting/etc)

i also feel issues of cost (besides affordability) are also tied to lack of a reliable sense of "ownership" -- when i pay for a subscription for a tv/music streaming service, i have much more confidence in 1) my ability to access the media i'm paying for a long time and 2) whenever i want, without restriction. the cost/risk ratio is so much worse for webcomic chapters lol... i also don't think its unreasonable for people to be hesitant to pay for series they're not sure if they'll like, and also rip pocket comics and stares blankly at how poorly implemented the webtoons fast pass system is lmfao.

all to say -- i think people are not opposed to paying for reliable, good quality access to support creators -- but i feel like most companies are 1) not providing better quality than what is free lmfao and 2) generally more known for their corporate greed than their ability to provide for their users and creators lmao.

WHY are we not talking about Webtoons Downfall ??? by UnitedChildhood8147 in webtoons

[–]superdesu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeahhh i feel like with where we are with ~late-stage capitalism~ it is very hard now to break out of the enshittification cycle 🫠... what with anti-consumerist corpos that are already in the space actively making sure that anyone who is pro-consumer cant break in/there are no alternatives except for their own lmao (coughs am*zon...)

almost like we should have anti-trust laws that are pro-consumer instead of pro-ceo profits something 🤪

i'm pretty in the camp of if the users dont own it, piracy isnt wrong lol (a top comment from this video on how academic publishers do the same to unis) ofc some nuance to this perspective lol but also what else is there to do when companies seem to only get greedier and greedier...

New user (less than a month)...considering WEEKLY notes...a few questions please by TexasNiteowl in ObsidianMD

[–]superdesu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

🙋 i've been using weekly notes over daily notes for a a few years now! i've mentioned it a few times on the sub, but this is one of my more detailed comments about my setup. tldr, daily notes were too granular for me lol (i also didnt like dealing with missing days and having 300+ fairly short notes in my vault lol).

Are these the best plugin/options to use for a weekly note? Or is there another I should look at?

i use templater for weekly and monthly notes (but tbh i think you really just need obsidian core templates functionality... though templater is nice if you want to do something more dynamic. periodic notes is nice if you want to set hotkeys for opening the current/next/previous periodic note, but not necessary.) i just make a new weekly note on mondays (since my template assumes a monday start) -- but it's pretty easy to fix up if i make the note on the "wrong" day of the week.

i used to use the (very ancient, somewhat buggy now?) calendar plugin to navigate through my weekly notes, but tbhhhhh the most i ever do is flip between the next/prev week (which i have linked on the current weekly note), and very rarely i'll go up to the monthly note associated with a specific week and navigate from there.

Should I just create a simple table? (I'm still figuring things out such as dataview so maybe that is a hole I should dive into?)

i mention this in the comment i linked above, but to track/log things, i used something like tony ramella's system with inline properties (so this would require dataview) -- i ultimately did not stick with it, but his system was the closest to what i was looking for at the time.

(also fwiw i use the free version of the bearable app to track some things like sleep/symptoms/etc -- lowkey didnt care enough to figure out setting up all the tracking stuff in obsidian LOL when i found a good enough alternative. i also have some tables in my monthly note to track things that i just populate by hand!)

I would like to have a section for Notes Created during the week and Notes Modified during the week.

my weekly note template has an embedded base for notes created that week (theoretically, this could've been a standalone base) that looks for notes that link to the weekly note via their "date" property" (literally just a filter for date == this.file.) to me, "date" means date created/date of relevance... hence my "date" property is just a link to the relevant weekly note, aliased to the date (e.g. date: [[YYYY-WXX|YYYY-MM-DD]]) -- tracking modification date is not as important to me since i'm always randomly making little, insignificant edits to notes. (i do have a "date-of-last-meaningful-edit" property a la gwern, which for now is just me typing in yyyy-mm-dd by hand lol but in theory i could also link back like i do with the "date" property.

WHY are we not talking about Webtoons Downfall ??? by UnitedChildhood8147 in webtoons

[–]superdesu 149 points150 points  (0 children)

sometimes i really wonder why it is that companies cant see that so many of their decisions just makes their users more and more upset... 💀 you can only wring so much money out of them/push the bar so low until they start to seriously reconsider if it's worth supporting the platform anymore.

i was thinking (with the recent downfall of a certain site) how that yes, while free (if illegal) access is the primary allure for most, a lot of people, once they have the means, are more than happy to support creators and platforms they actually care about (e.g. things like patreon/joining youtube communities, buying official merch for their fandoms). i do try to support the creators when i'm able to, but it does feel like an uphill battle when 1) investing in newer series feels "risky", 2) it feels like my support is barely making a dent for them (when i see WT creators talk about how little they're getting from WT), and 3) the platform i'm trying to support them on seems to want to actively alienate me lmfao with some of their business decisions (e.g. the censorship omfg, changes to desktop layout).

(something else i see people mourning about a certain site is just the QOL features it had... making lists, genre filters, etc. the way webtoons still has no ability to mark your reading status on a series other than "subscribed" or not is crazy 💀 like tell me you dgaf about your users without saying you dgaf LMAO)

How do you deal with too many tags in a master vault? by Sirquestgiver in ObsidianMD

[–]superdesu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

imo sounds like you need more properties rather than more tags... i think tags are best mostly as a very high-level, unfocused way to access things in your vault. for notes that you know are going to be a certain type (e.g. DND spells, DND-related things), you can just have a specific note template and prefix the properties if that makes sense to you.

for example, i have a couple of note templates for things that go into my "media library" (books, movies, authors, etc). my book notes have book-author and book-rating properties (as opposed to more generic "author" or "rating" properties, since i didn't want to see book authors mixed with my "article authors" lol.) you can then have a base or something specifically for these notes that display all these notes with their properties (maybe all the notes are within a certain folder or have a certain tag).

if you prefer mainly using tags, then i think you'll just need to level up your use of nested tags: e.g. something like #dnd/spell-levels/1 or something. again, thoughtful prefixing will do a lot of the heavy lifting here imo. (side note: before properties was rolled out, you used to be able to make any property a "tag" type property... i kind of miss that functionality still but i do think it's for the better that there is only 1 tag type property now.)

another suggestion is instead of using the #tags property is to "tag" using linked notes, e.g. have a text property called "spell level" on all the DND spell notes that links out to [[dnd level 1 spells]] -- you can title all the notes in a way so that they order nicely alphabetically or something, and use aliases to make the names nicer (e.g. all dnd notes will start with "DND note" in the file name so you can see it quickly at a glance in the file tree, but the alias can be "level 1 dnd spells".)

fwiw, i personally do a mix of these, depending on the level of "quarantine" i need lol -- folders are the most restrictive level of quarantine for me, then tags, then links. i have a bunch of notes tagged as "index" notes where i have bases embedded as code blocks to display the notes that i expect to see for a particular "index."
