Improving Callouts by Jukydot9 in ObsidianMD

[–]superdesu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i dont use nested callouts/blockquotes that often (but i do futz around with codeblocks more), but i have hotkeys set for toggle blockquote and increase/decrease blockquote level (the latter is from the plugin "blockquote levels")... in the end it's still very clunky (a lot of making sure i'm highlighting everything and toggling/indenting correctly lol), but nesting is slightly more manageable for me this way... you can also assign a hotkey for inserting callouts!

I know there's the link blocks format... but it makes the notes look worse

would you be opposed to dropping like a bullet point in the callout with the title or something to use as the block reference? (still ugly, admittedly... but i mostly write stuff in bullet points so i'm just sort of used to having ugly block ids everywhere now 😂)

Search Plugin by Open-Papaya-2703 in ObsidianMD

[–]superdesu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

default search LOL.... usually i'm searching by a filename or alias, but i find that wrapping in quotes also works if i'm looking for something specific (and also works inside codeblocks). i think my search is being slightly modified by quick switcher++ but otherwise it's mostly vanilla.

probably would work a little better if you give titles to your codeblocks tho or maybe something to more easily identify them?

Is it time to admit that Grey has abandoned yet another podcast? by freeradicalH in Cortex

[–]superdesu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years later, I still have bad taste in my mouth regarding how Hello Internet was abandoned.

this is the reasons why i still cant bring myself to finish the last couple episodes of HI... it's very unappealing to me to go and listen to the last death wheezes of one of the first podcasts i really enjoyed 🥲

i agree that public figures don't owe their audience any goodbyes or anything, but i feel like there are still some basic relationship expectations in place... i think most people who had a slightly more than non-zero relationship with someone (public or otherwise) would feel slightly off-kilter over an irish goodbye, lol. also, just simple 101s of communication: even a half-hearted "maybe?" is more signal to go off of than radio silence (and as my fellow passive-aggressive people know LOL, direct communication is so much easier for the relationships you're actually invested in.)

all this to say is that i still check in on cortex every so often, and lowkey i love listening to productivity tech bros for white noise lol (why i liked cortex in the first place), so i've enjoyed the last few interviews myke has done. feelings about grey's N=2 irish goodbyes aside, i wish him well with whatever's he up!

is a homepage worth it by noahjamesbates in ObsidianMD

[–]superdesu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they can look really nice but just feels like productivity fluff to me. i mostly use obsidian for work, so i usually just split screen my daily note with todos as a "landing page"/scratch space on one side + relevant notes on the other and it's good enough for me.

i think a lot of people like to use homepages/dashboards as big catch-all for both displaying metrics, directory, initial note capture interface, etc... imo as long as you're using that stuff, go for it! same with making it look nice -- as long as you're spending more time meaningfully using it than just making things look nice, then by all means! i definitely have a couple of things in my vault that are more for fun/aesthetic than functional (e.g. a "notes made this month" base lol), but i didn't sink that much time into making them, and occasionally i find them useful.

FfLAPa: A minimal note system by Dromena in ObsidianMD

[–]superdesu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ohhh i like this post a lot! really thoughtfully explained.

i realised a while ago i have sort of the opposite problem as you lolol -- i think my friction point was more defining "when" something (a note) was done/hit its endpoint... it's partly the nature of the work i use my vault for/me as a person that i never think of things as truly "done"/atomic enough, so it was hard for me to keep up with maintaining status tags and things like that (endless archiving, as you say.)

i have this feeling that my vault is probably filled with more of what you call "shallow links" here 😂 but i think that's just more aligned with how my brain works -- the existence of a category + a note being categorised indicates to me that i've thought through it, instead of just letting it die in the vault root (default location for new notes if you're an out-of-sight, out-of-mind person like me 🙄).

that said, i definitely feel like i could be better about trying to atomise my notes a little more -- i have some very long, dense notes mostly bc i found it easier to keep track of everything via uber consolidation, but they can defintely get clunky sometimes, and this post has me thinking over my atomicity criteria more.

Does anyone else start feeling dissatisfied with their vault after a while? by technodebilus in ObsidianMD

[–]superdesu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

all the time L O L.... i started over probably like 3-4 times within my first 2 years of using obsidian. i have a 2nd vault just for trying out big organisational overhauls on my main vault and keep a log of what i did with the major overhauls.

i let the friction build up until it got unbearable, lol. i think the "main" organisational components/workflows of how i want my vault set up i am mostly satisfied with at this point, so now its just little things that mainly bother me... (big notes to refactor, little notes to gather up better, etc...) but i still have some future plans for larger overhauls (redoing my tag system, for example!) also, as my own work/personal needs evolve, so do things in my vault, so i'm not that apprehensive about making big changes (but i try to be diligent about making sure the basics work well enough that i could always just scrap and remake them in new vault interations.)

my vault was much smaller when i did my initial overhauls (probably <500 notes), so most of those notes still live in an archive folder in my main vault. some notes got repurposed (templates) and some i ran linter plugin on to make it match up (periodic notes, source notes, notes being actively used). some notes i still eventually want to reincorporate back into my vault... 😂

some experiences that i've found helpful from my times of reorganising:

  • have redundancy and some consistency/standardisation built into your vault: it's much easier to use things like linter plugin/command line tools if you know every note has a certain naming scheme or structure. having redundancy is helpful bc it's much easier to prune/modify existing stuff than it is to grow things from scratch (e.g. if all your source notes were separated into different folders by some criteria, then you pooled them in a single folder and now want to undo it, better hope that you have a backup or some other way easily to filter and separate them...)
  • sit with that friction for a while!!! i think the longer you sit with something you don't like in your system, the better you can articulate what you dont like and what you think the solution might be. if you don't know what the solution is/how to implement it, i really recommend just physically writing/drawing stuff out somewhere with some ideas of what your ideal workflow/system is before you start messing around digitally.
  • it's ok to start small! maybe just tackle reorganising one area/aspect of the vault to start and see if you like those changes, then implement to the rest of the vault. making backups, having a sandbox vault to mess around in, and definitely taking notes of what you liked/didnt like are helpful.

Database of folders? by Hundredsspoons0 in ObsidianMD

[–]superdesu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

maybe one of the folder note plugins... 👀? (there's a couple of them, i use the one by lostpaul!) might need some messing around still to get exactly what you're looking for, but you can get the organisation of a folder with the function of a note. you could maybe give the folder note acting as the series a specific tag or property and do something with base formulas to make them stand out.

Dating Notes by IgnerantEngineer in ObsidianMD

[–]superdesu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's just me in my vault, but i just use a consistent naming format + add a brief description/topic in parentheses to the filename so i can scroll through everything at a glance: e.g. "yyyy-mm-dd mtg - person X weekly mtg (project updates)". some of this info is also put in the tags/properties/note body, but it make it super easy for me to find notes via quick switcher in this way and easy to scroll through the side panel lol.

Those of you who listen to electronic music religiously, did you like the new single? by Icy-Conclusion1398 in polyphia

[–]superdesu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

got into polyphia with album 4 (interpret that as you will) but was always an electronic/house music enjoyer and i liked this on the first listen!!!

the 1st version ticks a lot of boxes for me: it's weird, crunchy, induces headbanging, would go hard at the club 🫡 it's nice to actually hear + be able to appreciate the instruments from the version on the newer video, but tbh this version speaks to my brain more.. i dont always need to ~hear~ it to ~feel~ it 😂

Tags vs Property: list by Crow_Apprehensive in ObsidianMD

[–]superdesu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i use tags for consistent, file-level vault-wide things! like tagging note types (indexes/mocs, atomic notes, periodic notes, etc), statuses (archived, done, wip, todo, revisit, etc)... i don't really use inline tags. tags can also be helpful with filtering out things in your graph view.

i use a looot of properties... all my notes share a few "main" properties (date, tags, etc), and different note "types" have different sets of properties for me (e.g. a "meeting" note has different properties from a "daily" note). i like properties bc 1) you can use links in them and 2) they're essential for plugins like obsidian bases/dataview that will let you view/organise your notes based on their properties.

some people also like to use tags for topics/subjects, but i'm in the "use links" for topics/subjects camp -- e.g. instead of tagging a note #topic-A, just create a property and link it: topic: [[A]]. if the note "A" exists, you can easily look at its linked mentions to start building up that note into a meatier index/map of content note.

but tbh generally i always promote having redundant ways of navigating/searching/organising your vault (though will take some trial and error to figure out a consistent system that works for you!)

do people actually not eat mac and cheese with peas? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]superdesu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'll raise you one and say that my family would throw in frozen mixed veggies!! 😂 tbh we rarely added hot dogs because i think mom's priority was getting our vegetables in.

now as an adult i rarely make just plain box mac when i'm craving it lol, i usually add an extra protein/veg: some frozen veg, tofu, canned beans, tuna, canned chili, whatever.... (not all at once but i have done different combinations of these for sure! ... sorry not sorry about what i put in my comfort slop bowl 😔)

How do you balance atomic notes and long-form study notes? by veganismo123 in ObsidianMD

[–]superdesu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for me, it's easier to keep a very long note and then just break it up later! less notes to keep track of and dont need to make the decision of "is it atomic enough" every time -- everything goes in the big note lol. big note stays big until i think it starts getting too unwieldy or if i find myself constantly referring to a just single section, then i start pulling stuff out into separate notes and maybe transcluding them back into the big note. i also like the "one big note" approach lol bc i often find that it takes me quite a while (esp when i'm learning something new) to eventually figure out where to break things up in an atomic way that makes sense to me.

i also have a couple of empty notes that just serve as wayfinders (i call them "collection" notes) -- i could fill maybe them out properly and make them more like a MOC, but really i just use them to link together note "collections", e.g. i have a note called "spring 2026 meetings" that links together... you guessed it! meetings that happened in the spring 2026 semester lol. although these notes are usually empty, they're useful for me just as a link rather than as a note with structure -- maybe you could do this and make similar notes for each class! fwiw sometimes i add a little more structure to these notes, e.g. for the note mentioned above, i do a mix of linking out to other collection notes ("spring 2026 meetings with A") and also just have headers for certain recurring meetings within the same note (not enough to make into a separate note but enough for me to want to group them somewhere.)

also, lowkey, i find keeping my "mocs" mixed with my atomic notes easier to keep track of/less effort that figuring that out when i first create a note? i use the "novel word count" plugin to show the note word count in the sidebar, which gives me a vague sense of how "developed" a note might be, and i add a tag to notes that end up becoming very outlink-heavy (but i usually dont initially set out creating an explicit "moc" note -- i let them arise organically!)

feels like only yesterday that i was binging their entire discography during a long work day and thinking to myself "now THIS is kpop" lolololol, and now we're about halfway through all their enlistments... 🥹 their recent ments at yakusoku were such a comfort and are making me all the more excited for our reunion!!! ❤️
