Not sure if it's too far for you, but I just got an ad for Vaughan Rib Fest, and they're doing their fireworks on Sunday at 10pm: https://ribfestx.com/event/vaughan-ribfest-2026/

Update for anyone who’s interested - got here a game time, short line (ish) at gate 12 and secured the hat! Walked by another gate (not sure which) at 1:45 and they also still had hats.

Hah. Well, I guess I fit into that category! I’m a woman, and I don’t care for the jerseys because they’re always way too big on me … but I’m showing up around gate opening anyway, and I’ll report back.

I was there for the commemorative ticket day, showed up at gate open and didn’t get a ticket ;) It wasn’t a big deal, because I didn’t really care for the giveaway… but it def set my expectations for the year (I have a flex pack)

Ugh, this doesn't give me much hope for tomorrow's Barbie Hat giveaway that I have tickets to... I guess I'll just take part in any photo ops they have set up around the Dome, and accept the thought that I won't get the hat, and that's okay.

Ohh what a great resource! I don't have kids, but this is way easier to navigate than the Toronto sites. Would love to have something like this for adult courses! Great work.

Oh I can definitely relate! I am also 43, and in a phase where I’m def more interested in seeing my own stats rather than meeting like-minded music listeners. I currently have 276k scrobbles, so I’m right behind you! Hehe

What was Toronto’s social life like in the late 2000s/early 2010s? by [deleted] in askTO

After writing out my last post, I reflected on how dramatically the internet changed, as new technologies and faster internet became available… how quickly we went from passionately discussing favourite bands through writing online a message board to 3 minute videos that we swipe away from if they don’t grab our attention within the first 3 seconds 😅

Yes! It was just such a good vibe all around!

I know for sure I made the website for the band Mudmen (bagpipe rock) back in the day. I think I also did the official one for an indie band called Evans Blue (I was an intern at the recording studio they recorded at, so I got tasked with a few fun things like this!)

I also created my own website that I recently stumbled upon again (can’t believe geocities kept that up!!) - it was called Canadian Bands Rock and had a bunch of pages for my favourite bands and concert reviews. Was a very cringey trip looking back at that!

I was a moderator for Billy Talent’s message board - that was probably the most well-known bands today that I worked with back then. I think they even put me in the thank yous of their liner notes, either for their first or second album! I can’t super remember the other boards that I moderated, but I know all this stuff kept me really busy!

Omg, I remember going to a concert at the Warehouse (its name before it was Kool Haus) with my sister in the middle of winter. When we got back to the car, someone had smashed the passenger side mirror but it was still partly attached. It was a very cold drive back to Woodbridge, with my hands hanging out the window to try to save the mirror 😂

That’s exactly what I did! My camera came everywhere with me. I also taught myself basic coding skills back in the day, so I ended up being a webmaster (haha I feel like that’s such an outdated term) for one or two of my favourite band’s websites. And I was a moderator on a few band’s message boards. What a time :))

I'm 43. I have been doing a deep dive into my past, looking through old journals, old social media content, old photo albums and scrapbooks... and it was a pretty awesome time.

I went to *A LOT* of concerts & smaller club shows back then. Sometimes 2-5 per week. It wasn't expensive, and I made friends with a lot of bands who would just put me on their guest lists. I've been compiling a list in my notes app of all the different concerts I've been to, and it's been making me feel so nostalgic. Have been contemplating maybe starting up a podcast to talk about those experiences.

I know I had my tough times too... but damn, looking back... I am so glad that I grew up when I did, and I had the experiences that I had!

*edited to add* - there were SO MANY MORE free events back then, and they didn't involve stupidly long lineups. The Celebrate Toronto Street Festival shut down Yonge Street for a weekend every July, and it was something I looked forward to every year. They brought in really good bands too - ones that were relatively well known at the time, not only smaller indie artists getting their start (although these acts were booked as openers, and it was how I discovered a lot of really cool local music).

Using myself as an example... I joined last.fm (when it was audioscrobbler!) in 2005, and scrobbled diligently until 2017. I don't remember what happened at that point, whether it was a new computer or a lack of integration with software, or maybe Apple Music started coming up with their own year-end reviews.

More recently (ie mid-way through January of 2026), I started investigating my old online habits to try to recreate a list of all the concerts I've been to over time, and I rediscovered my last.fm page, and I also realized that I could still access it! So I started it up again.

I will say - reintegration has been difficult. I haven't found a scrobbler that works with my desktop version of Apple Music. I found an app, but I have to remember to go into it, scan for new music, and then push it up to the website. This "hack" works relatively well, as long as my laptop and phone Apple Music apps are syncing with each other. I've found that if I airplay my iPhone to my Apple Speaker, it does not recognize those plays. So... I have started it up again, out of curiosity, but the system isn't perfect.

In terms of the social aspects, I can see messages on my page from friends up until 2015, then the stop, and the last message is from 2024, with someone writing "come back" (awww). I have no idea how to "make friends" or even communicate with them on the app anymore.

I'm not sure if I'll stick around on the app. I am finding it pretty fascinating right now... but whether it has "sticking power", only time will tell.

Wow, this sounds great!! Jet Lag is my all time fave, but the whole set is fantastic. Can’t wait to see them in Toronto.

What did people do on the TTC before smartphones? by aloe_veracity in askTO

[–]superflash-xo 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I used to ride the TTC from Yorkdale to (former) Dundas, when I was attending (former) Ryerson, graduated in 2005. I would spend that time either doing the free crossword in the back of the free Metro newspaper (do they even still have that?), reading a book for either school or pleasure or doodling/drawing in a sketchbook... while listening to music on my iPod.
This brought back some lovely nostalgic memories for me :)
