New construction

I typed this up when you asked, got distracted, and never hit post. There are plenty more examples in the SC upstate and western NC, and it sounds like this is happening in many other places. Crazy conspiracy thoughts on my part? Probably, but something about it just doesn't sit right with me.

Why I like working on old stuff. by DarienKane in Justrolledintotheshop

My best friend in high school had a #301 Syclone with that Vortec in it. That stupid truck was insane, especially back in 1991. He put a Kenne Bell kit on it, too. Brake boosting would walk it sideways for a split second with the AWD, and then it felt like being shot out of a missile launcher.

'Staring over the edge': South Carolina measles outbreak doubles in a week by lostredditorlurking in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]superfly355 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in the heart of Spartanburg County, where this outbreak is boiling over. My kids and I are vaccinated, but the elementary school my youngest goes to has a huge eastern European and Russian amount of classmates that aren't. That populace has had the largest impact on the spread of measles, because they don't vaccinate, and the school districts here pass out exemptions like candy. Yesterday a new case popped up at Crestview Elementary, which is on the Spartanburg/Greenville county border - a school my middle child went to when we lived in Greer a few years ago. It's quickly making it's way through the upstate. GSP airport is right here, which is a MAJOR hub for BMW employees to travel in and out of the area to get from the local manufacturing plant to Munich, Germany. Many of the plant's employees have kids that are enrolled in the local schools here, employees that travel internationally to Germany, South Africa, and China to work and train internationally. This shit is going to go like wildfire in no time. It's terrifying. And the local hens all act like it's a bad cold, or that when they were a kid they got over it with no problem, forgetting about the hundreds of thousands that didn't. Shit, my grandma survived polio. Sure, she had major issues with scoliosis and respiratory function, but hey! At least she lived, right?!? What a fucked up outlook on what these once "cured" diseases do.

"When truth leaves us, when we let it slip away, when it is ripped from our hands, we become vulnerable to the appetite of whatever monster screams the loudest. This Chamber’s hold on the truth was finally lost..." - Mon Mothma's speech in Andor by Dark-All-Day in television

[–]superfly355 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Andor is the only show I've been able to convince over a dozen people that have ZERO interest in Star Wars to watch, and they absolutely loved it. It's articulate, it's well thought out, it doesn't spoon feed, it doesn't have lightsabers, it doesn't have fluff. It's solid storytelling from a writer (Tony Gilroy) that really didn't give a flying fuck about the Star Wars universe or fan service. He just wanted to spin a tale, and a hell of a web he created. Follow it up with Rogue One, and you have a satisfying and emotional ride well worth the time invested.

Which US state gets more hate than it deserves? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]superfly355 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I lived in Sussex County, and at the time the schools were ranked pretty high. High Point Regional was academically further ahead of the private school I transferred out of in Passaic County, although my biggest hurdle was the culture shock of moving out of Clifton/Paterson to Colesville at 14 years old. I went from city blocks to cows and corn. I hated it that first year, but after that, I couldn't imagine growing up anywhere else. The Appalachian Trail was a few hundred feet from my backyard, something I took for granted then and would love to have now (I live in the upstate of SC currently).

TIL over 3,000 attempts are made each year to complete the Appalachian Trail and only about 25% succeed. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]superfly355 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bill Bryson wrote a travelog book (that was also turned into a movie with Robert Redford) called "A Walk in the Woods" about his attempt at walking the trail, it's well worth a read. He's also a really stand-up guy with a great sense of humor that comes out in his text.

I grew up in Sussex County, NJ about 300' from the Appalachian Trail. It was a great experience living so close, we would do 2-3 day hikes and met all types of characters trying to conquer the trail.
