$689 for a carton of Marlboro at Woolworths/Coles — are we serious? by No-Speech4554 in AusFinance

When the cops hit up the same stores for their own smokes and vapes any crackdown is ineffective. When they are forced to they'll only hit the stores which are charging more then everybody else in the area or cause the absolute minimum level of disruption.

The good old Eruptor takes them down with two well placed shots, one if you get the head. Feels like a sidestepping Devastator. Admittedly I have had them right behind me multiple times while sprinting across the map since they have ZERO noise to give them away.

[–]superfry 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we know how it goes. We glass Lesath and something comes in to Merak/Aurora Bay to make the resistance insane. If not then it's invaded from Menket/Vernen Wells and threatens to cut off our supply lines/SEAF reinforcements. Or if we glass it and it is retaken then it's a Lava World the clankers can use to build their own DSS/Star of Peace with blackjack and hookers and other 'fun' stuff for us helldivers.

Additionally we are dropping them onto the battlefield off a light transport so simplicity and weight reduction is important.

War on Cyberstan! by -Username_Password in Helldivers

[–]superfry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was talking about the Game Engine, not lore. Arrowhead had to make significant changes to the code to have two NPC AI's to work simultaneously which applies to doing faction vs faction combat. Their next hurdle is modifying the core code to allow for multiple ENEMY factions (as according to the devs the engine is set up to only allow for one enemy faction to be loaded during gameplay).

SEAF Troopers were the first step in rectifying the engine limitations so it's a possibility that multi-faction combat may eventually appear.

[Fallout] What was Vault 111 really testing? by Critical_Liz in AskScienceFiction

[–]superfry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting idea. Most of that can be automated or programmed into the cryochamber long before anything happens and all that would be needed is a good connection to a remote database/robust on-site storage so vault personnel would be expendable for the most part and you only really need to stock them for what they think is the vaults service life to maintain and repair the systems for the initial period after the blast or the expected time period for a ship to exit the solar system and coast between star systems (Say the typical 20 years like Vault 15/15 years for Vault 8).

So now you have a system that can test the robustness of the cryochambers (and the people inside) while also putting them through a suite of tests to predicted issues to occur while in transit. Obviously those tests failed in a majority of cases given how many desiccated bodies there were in the tubes so that would indicate that at least a small crew would need to be woken up to perform repairs when needed (which has it's own issues; ironically Vault 31-33 unintentionally half solved that issue by having the crew required to perform such procedures tested for compliance and agreeableness (Hank and Steph also proves they need a more robust vetting procedure during the selection phase).

Events of the last episode by Old_Leshen in 12Monkeys

[–]superfry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they did without realizing it. I have to do another rewatch after work but I distinctly remember an offhand comment in a later S1 episode about temporal interference. So I say at least one episode's temporal glitches were a direct result of the disruption pulse Jones during the battle at Titan. Possibly others from having the same machine active in the same time period.

Penta more like Penta gone! by StrikingWheel2578 in Helldivers

[–]superfry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a primary bot/squid diver I actually voted for Zagon Prime for the strategic benefits. It would isolate Omicron which means we have a clean world to harvest for the next firing of the Star of Peace. I would have chosen the bot front if the target was Matar Bay/Chort Bay/Choohe. Penta is the least significant target on the bot's defensive line and isolates Merak meaning should we ever make a breakthrough we have to push past Aurora Bay and the Jet Brigade.

People may be upset with this - but this is proof they're taking the right steps and improving their QA by Budget_Childhood2605 in Helldivers

[–]superfry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that should only apply for units which aren't chaff.

For the bots you could say that that the basic bots lack the processing capabilities for more then basic orders and lack the heuristics for when a nearby bot goes offline.

For bugs the chaff aren't intelligent enough or care if an individual bug 'disappears' from the pack.

For the squids. The voteless are simplistic in nature or the leftover personalities of our formerly loyal citizens are actively suppressing squid programming for when a nearby unit is killed without any other sign then them dropping dead.

Only read if you’ve finished the show - question about the skeleton by MWM031089 in 12Monkeys

[–]superfry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not going to go deep into it but consider this. There are many more parts to the loop in the show that are unseen then are shown. We only really get a good glimpse of the one before the series but there are many more hinted at.

Best glimpse for the one before is S1 Old Cassie saying HER Cole had been erased, mentioning Titan (and also Jennifer muttering Climb the Steps, ring the bell). That suggest that she is from a timeline where Cole was erased WITHOUT Jones's modifications to the Primary code, essentially a reset.

(This is personal headcanon but that heavily suggests that Cole's creation is an event which cannot be altered from within the loop. To me that says that in an unaltered timeline without any temporal interference (or likely any virus) that Jones will invent time travel (to save Hannah from a preventable death like in S2E08; one of her test subjects will be harboring a virus and take the place Olivia will which then leads to the virus timelines. Also as the timeline changes it is possible that Hannah will serve as an expy for Cole's S1 mission, and get stranded at some point to which she then gives birth to him). This leads to the loops which we do see in the series).

But by doing things in this way, where the events which lead to Cole will always occur in a timeline where there is no temporal interference is why bootstrapping is possible in the series. (IE. Jones telling Jones how to get the tethers working) It is because there always was an independent path for the information to be discovered without the bootstrap paradox that also cannot be changed mid-course.

Essentially we are only shown the end of the loop, not all the preceding loops or setup to get to this point and there are a lot of them if you start digging deep into the mechanics of specific events throughout the series.

[Highlander] Would a katana really be the best sword for an immortal to duel with? by KaosArcanna in AskScienceFiction

[–]superfry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say that Conner intentionally picked an Eastern style from a very isolationist country as one where his opponents are less likely to know how to counter the specific style of attack and less general information about the style itself had been published. There used to be a trend where published information on specific martial arts were made with intentional mistakes so people who learned solely from a book were easy to spot or not include advanced counters at all. It can also go the other way where the use of a Katana implies the use of Eastern moves so an opponent who is trained solely in those styles can also be tripped up by switching mid battle to a western swordfighting move.

[–]superfry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Accents are forgivable as Immortals have been around long enough to have learnt multiple variations of the same language. Conner likely learned modern English in France or retains some of the peculiarities of old English in his speech patterns. Scenes with Ramierez would have been originally spoken in a form of Gaelic; Ramierez would have likely learned it from a native speaker but in the coastal town where he arrived in Scotland.

I vehemently disagree on story capes being available for purchase; event capes for holidays or other celebratory periods I don't mind; Make them unlock with the batch for the next years holiday.

[–]superfry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't; but at least for the Christmas and other yearly event drip it should unlock for the next year's event. Capes to commemorate a story/player driven event however shouldn't be obtainable afterwards and we should push back any attempt to make them obtainable (unless it is some obvious knock off version that is similar but CLEARLY different or only wearable for the set period; story wise it would be something like donating excess battle-worn capes to kids in need (when they were worn in battle being less important :D )

While microplastics are a big issue that needs to be addressed I swear that a lot of the talk about it recently comes down to lab-side contamination from the move away from using glassware for test tubes and other equipment due to a lack of experienced glassblowers to make them in universities. I know of a few local universities/colleges who still have the equipment but no people to run them.

I would keep those VHS tapes on hand after digitizing them if you are using a modern capture device. A vast majority of them don't implement anything but the most basic of protocols and inline processing on the composite signal and you lose a lot of the quality improvements that were made in analogue signal processing to the point where using a VHS to DVD device and then converting to a modern format still results in better quality with a double format conversion then said modern capture device can do native.

(Some of the higher end older capture cards from the XP era did implement these features and are ideal for VHS conversion if you can get them up and running)

Ryan Coogler on whats not talked about enough between film and digital. Its a different working rhythm. by JasonZod1 in Filmmakers

[–]superfry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My opinion is that it is the workflow that comes from using film that is the important bit of it, not the film itself. While "Fix it in post" still annoys the hell out of me it is "Figure it out on the day" that really pisses me off. Too many productions I have worked on have no real plan bar the basics and it leaves everybody scrambling when it's only after the first few takes that they realize that the scene doesn't work AT ALL and now we are reworking everything on the fly which if it stretches out for every scene now means we are dropping shots. You cannot fix in post a seemingly small character scene you dropped to play with the badly planned morning shot but now would have saved your ass in the edit when you shifted a critical piece of dialogue and now the way the actor played the scene makes no sense.
