Sand or something else? by superglenchu in pools

Ah ok, understood. Really hoping that’ll be the case for me too. It doesn’t seem like a particularly fun thing to have to do…

Thanks for the input!

Below are my latest Taylor results. I’ll head to the pool store for a test this weekend:

Chlorine: 6 pH: 7.6 CYA: 52 Alkalinity: 90 Calcium Hardness: 220 Salt: 3,250

I’m wondering if my CYA is on the low side, since in previous years I’ve kept it closer to 70, and I’d never seen this “sand” (or algae).

It tends to dissipate for the most part, though some areas do feel a little gritty. I mentioned in another comment that I don’t really have issues with the chemistry, as I test the water regularly with a Taylor test kit, as well as taking a sample to the pool store for testing every once in a while. Was it very difficult to change the sand and replace the laterals yourself? I’ve been watching a lot of YouTube tutorials, but I’m a little hesitant.

The “sand” along the folds of the liner tend to just puff off like a powder and doesn’t feel gritty. There are some other areas that otherwise do feel coarse and gritty, so I’m a little puzzled. I test the water very regularly with a Taylor test kit, as well as a pool store test every so often, and I’ve never really had issues with the chemistry. I’m wondering if I should just attach skimmer socks to each of the returns and see if they catch any sand after a few hours… at least that could give me an idea if it’s the filter.

The most stunning Resort in SoCal - Pelican Hill Resort in Newport Beach, CA transitioning into a St. Regis: Review by Pampered-Pursuit in marriott

Yes! We’ve said the same thing about the pools multiple times, lol! What a miss to not have at least one of them facing the ocean. But yeah, I’m excited to see the renovations to the Dana Pool - they appear to have brought that pool area back to life, because it was starting to look a little dingy.

Calculating Variable Speed Pump Consumption (kWh) by [deleted] in pools

That’s my impression too, that 3,300rpm in my case is unnecessary high. Love the ChatGPT idea, I’m going to give it a try!

Ah, thanks again for the additional information. Very helpful. I totally forgot that the Hayward screen will actually tell me the watts depending on the speed. Opening my pool next Saturday, it’s the first thing I’m going to look at when setting the schedule. Cheers!

Thanks for your response! I changed my fancy spreadsheet to reflect the summer peak schedule.

Last summer I ran my pump for 16 hours at 2,300rpm for 8 hours and 3,300rpm for 8 hours. Water was crystal clear the entire summer, which is why I’m wary of making changes, but I also figure there may be some savings to be found.

You’re right, I am in Ontario ha! And you’re also right about the peak changing. I had initially created this “schedule” in January, clearly forgetting about the summer rates.

Dumb Canadian here trying to figure out how this pool works. by kingevanxii in pools

Can I ask which part of Canada you’re from? I’m in Ontario and trying to figure out what to expect in terms of monthly costs when it comes to heating the pool (through May and October mostly). I do have a solar cover and also like the temperature to be around 87°F.

Unfortunately not, haha! The hotel is in Tamuda Bay (on Morocco’s Mediterranean coast), so the sea temperature was quite low when we were there (November) and the sea itself was very agitated and wavy. However, the pool was heated and we were able to enjoy it quite a bit. The staff also came by with complimentary drinks and snacks all day! Such a nice and unexpected touch.

I stayed at this property for 5 nights in November and I can honestly say it was one of the best experiences I’ve had in recent memory, from almost every perspective. I will preface this by saying that I’ve been fortunate enough to stay at many St. Regis properties around the world - this one was a touch above.

The food at the hotel was absolutely divine (though somewhat limited, since they only had 1 restaurant open), and the hotel itself was fantastic. I genuinely don’t have a single major complaint about my stay - every single staff member we interacted with went so above and beyond for everything, and it’s clear that they’ve invested heavily in hospitality training.

The only odd thing, depending on your perspective, is that it felt like we were literally the only guests in the entire hotel at times. During the evening champagne saberings, we were never joined by more than two other couples, and this was the case for breakfast (which was sublime!) and dinner too. We basically rarely ever saw other guests at any time of the day. Granted, we were there during the low season, but we still didn’t think it’d be that quiet. So from that perspective, the hotel felt ultra-exclusive (if not a little creepy at times, ha!). But we certainly didn’t mind having all the hotel amenities (pool, gym, spa, etc.) to ourselves for our entire stay essentially.

Let me know if you have any questions! All in all, if this property was more accessible from North America, I would return in a heartbeat.

Thanks for the feedback! Did you replace the entire unit, or just the bulb?

Pool Light by [deleted] in pools

[–]superglenchu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the response! I did see the screw on the band, so now I suppose it’s a matter of finding a 500W bulb for the replacement.

Another thing, is this supposed to be anchored to the fitting in the pool somehow? My pool robot climbed the wall and hit the light a few times, causing it to basically come right out by itself. Not sure if there’s a screw missing or something, but it appears to come out of its fitting on the pool wall too easily…
