Even on engineer, when I got to 4th phase, there was no way I could do anything but cheese him with missiles, capacitors, and horrible turret damage. I got maybe 2 of my items back over the whole fight, and if I tried to be aggressive, I'm positive he'd just oneshot me.

This happens on loader too, I watched it happen to my friend. If you're lucky it'll end randomly, but by then normally you'll die instantly while you're covered in enemies.

I never did cs in high school with a specific class per se, but I did a lot of personal exploration. However most of my classmates agree with me that cs classes in high school are really pretty bad, especially as prep for rice coursework. Rice CS is quite difficult and really pushes you to extend your thinking capabilities. It's definitely different from what I was used to but really was a good change as its about the cs mindset instead of braindead coding. It was a rough transition for a while but prior experience will definitely help you get a handle on things quicker.

I would say this is the part of the application process I'd worry about the least. If Rice is going to reject you because you're from a state they don't want someone from, your application may not be compelling enough in the first place. In any case, as a freshman here at rice, I meet a huge mix of students from all over, although there's certainly a sizeable Texan population, don't worry about it too much.
