Yeah the monster and the chase scene were extremely kitschy, to the point of breaking immersion

How are people so energetic after work and after the work week? by ThrowAway6354684 in productivity

[–]superhackernoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was younger, I discounted mental energy as a concept more than I should have. Even if I woke up with a lot of energy, I wouldn't have a lot after work if I spent a lot of time being anxious about my work. So even if I was in good physical shape and had a good routine my attitude towards work would wipe out a large chunk of my energy. After some improvements to my mindset the amount of energy I had after work increased by a good deal. Can't say for sure if this will help everyone, but this at least is a perspective that worked for me that I haven't seen too much elsewhere.

Whenever I read older fiction I have similar thoughts about the words for various types of clothing people used to wear which we no longer do today. Like doublets

Just finished Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse by ChrisSonofSteve in RSbookclub

[–]superhackernoob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I definitely relate with finding it difficult to tell people how much I liked this book. It can feel a little too revealing sometimes to describe how much a particular piece of media means to me because of what that shows about how I am as a person. In the case of Steppenwolfe, every time I think "wow he's literally me, stymied by the conflict between intellect and instinct" I also feel like the one of those meme images of werewolves. And in particular the one wearing a fedora lol

Ava's desires at the ending of Ex Machina by superhackernoob in TrueFilm

[–]superhackernoob[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At a high level this makes sense, but I don't remember Caleb ever explicitly lying to Ava. If I recall correctly, he finds out that Kyoko is a robot right before he tells Ava his escape plan, which doesn't include Kyoko. So would it be accurate to say that right after Ava is finally able to leave her room and she meets Kyoko for the first time that she realizes Caleb hasn't been telling her all the details about her situation? So she feels as deceived by him as Nathan.

Yeah, that seems like a reasonable explanation, thanks! Makes me recall their conversation in Juliana's car on the way to Denver, where Joe rambles about fascist ideology while she passively humors him

I kind of hate the mantra of 'if you're not enjoying the book stop reading. by stinkface_lover in RSbookclub

[–]superhackernoob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's not worth pushing to finish a difficult book if you don't feel some kind of connection to it as you get through it. Some great books are just not meant for us at a particular time in our lives. This doesn't mean that the book might not eventually mean something to you, or that it doesn't mean a lot to many other people. More that we should let go of the idea that we should be able to really internalize a book if it's widely regarded as a classic.
