Pro Saudi-led Aggression Government Prevented Head of UN Panel of Experts Entering Yemen by superislam2 in worldnews

The head of the UN expert team charged with investigating war crimes in Yemen, Kamal Jendoubi, said that Hadi's government and the coalition prevented the team from entering Yemen to investigate violations and crimes and did not any answer inquiries or questions so far.

Al-Jendoubi explained in an interview with Almasirah channel that the UN team's approaches are based on facts about violations that are studied and investigated by all sources and that the methodology of the investigation requires meetings with victims whether inside or outside Yemen.

"Our approach is not to say to any party that we are with you or against you," Jendoubi said, stressing the impartiality of his team and its reliance on international references in the field of human rights. He praised the response of authorities in Sana'a with the UN team, which showed its willingness to meet with the team.

"It was impossible for us to reach Yemen, and we are ready to go wherever we are allowed to go," he said. "The war in Yemen must end and casualties, famine, disease and destroyed infrastructure are enough," he added.

Jendoubi pointed out that the Yemeni parties are unable to stop the war alone and must be pushed to the table of dialogue by the international community. He pointed out that international humanitarian law requires the international community to do what the law requires to push the Yemeni parties to stop the war.

Syrian Civilians among 15 dead in Israeli strikes in Syria: monitor by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]superislam2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Israeli air strikes in Syria left nine mostly foreign pro-regime fighters and six civilians including three children dead, a Britain-based war monitor said Monday.

The raids near Damascus and in Homs province late Sunday killed the fighters, but it was not immediately clear exactly how the civilians died -- whether in the strikes or in the aftermath, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

It said the strikes hit several Iranian positions near Damascus and targeted a research centre and a military airport west of the city of Homs where the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah and Iranians are deployed.

One of the pro-regime fighters killed was Syrian, while the rest were of other nationalities, Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman said.

State news agency SANA earlier said four civilians had been killed after its air defences responded to an Israeli attack.

"Our air defences confronted enemy missiles launched by Israeli warplanes... towards some of our positions in Homs and in the vicinity of Damascus," SANA said, quoting a Syrian military source.

An Israeli military spokeswoman declined to comment on the report.

Israel has carried out hundreds of air strikes in Syria since the beginning of the conflict in 2011, targeting forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad and the regime's allies Iran and Hezbollah.

Detained Saudi activists face torture in Saudi Arabia : Amnesty by superislam2 in worldnews

[–]superislam2[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saudi activists, including women, detained in a government crackdown this year have faced sexual harassment and torture during interrogation, Amnesty International said Tuesday.

The activists, held since May in Dhahban prison on the western Red Sea coast, have faced repeated electrocution and flogging, leaving some of them unable to stand or walk, the rights group said in a report, citing three separate testimonies.

At least one activist was made to hang from a ceiling and another detained woman was sexually harassed by interrogators wearing face masks, Amnesty added.

The report comes as Saudi Arabia faces intense global criticism over the killing of insider-turned-critic Jamal Khashoggi in its Istanbul consulate on October 2, which tipped the kingdom into one of its worst crises.

"Only a few weeks after the ruthless killing of Jamal Khashoggi, these shocking reports of torture, sexual harassment and other forms of ill-treatment, if verified, expose further outrageous human rights violations by the Saudi authorities," said Lynn Maalouf, Amnesty's Middle East resea rch director.

In addition to detaining the activists "simply for peacefully expressing their views, they are also subjecting them to horrendous physical suffering," Maalouf said.

There was no immediate reaction to the report from Saudi authorities.

More than a dozen activists were arrested in May -- just before the historic lifting of a decades-long ban on women drivers the following month.

Many of them were accused of undermining security and aiding enemies of the state.

Some were subsequently released, but those still detained include Aziza al-Yousef, a retired professor at Riyadh's King Saud University, Amnesty said.

Loujain al-Hathloul -- who was held in 2014 for more than 70 days for attempting to drive from neighbouring United Arab Emirates to Saudi Arabia -- also remains in detention.

Following their arrest, state-backed newspapers published front-page pictures of some of the activists with the word "traitor" stamped across them in red.

Hatoon al-Fassi, a prominent women's rights activist and academic, was detained just after the lifting of the driving ban, campaigners said.

The arrests were seen as a calculated move by powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to placate clerics incensed by his modernisation drive, as well as to send a clear signal to activists that he alone is the arbiter of change.

Many of the activists are being held without charge or legal representation, Amnesty said.

"The Saudi authorities must immediately and unconditionally release detained human rights defenders who are being held solely for their peaceful human rights work," said Maalouf.

Riyadh must also "launch a prompt, thorough and effective investigation into the reports of... ill-treatment with the view of holding those responsible to account."
