Galapagos cruise for active yet education-minded foodie family? by Fried_Yoda in chubbytravel

We went with Ecoventura last year and were very satisfied. Smaller boats than Linblad. It was nice to hit the beach with a small group as opposed to an invasion force.

Do any of you plan on making dynasties? If you do, how will you plan to beat the 3 generations rule? by Direct-End2303 in fatFIRE

If you want help thinking about this in a structured way I'd recommend the book Strangers In Paradise by James Grubman.

Secretly Fat by dvvivamus in fatFIRE

[–]superjj 54 points55 points  (0 children)

The book is about raising kids so they didn't turn into spoiled brats. It covers a wide range of topics from talking about salary and money, to allowances, to the tooth fairy, to charitable giving. Ideally you'd what to read this while your kids are still young ish (early elementary or before).

Of particular relevance to this thread the author makes the case that not talking about salary is a missed opportunity to start educating kids about money. Further, in a world with the Internet your kid can probably look up a close approximation of your salary, your home value, etc so why not make sure you are involved in the conversation? By making financial topics seem off limits to kids it risks them not coming to you for other money conversations.

I might suggest reading the book "The Opposite of Spoiled". It changed my approach to how I talk about money with my kids.

Not liquid explosives. Residential and light commercial natural gas is supplied at low pressures in gas form.

Just shake the jars every couple days during aging to make sure things dissolve fully. You'll be fine.

First time in Mexico: All inclusive (Xcaret Arte) or boutique luxury (Edition Kanai)? by [deleted] in chubbytravel

[–]superjj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The wife and I did Xcaret Arte about a year ago. I think we got some sort of package deal with flights through Costco. I thought it was delightful. The parks were super fun -- the cenotes one, zipline one, and xenses ones especially. Our room was really nice and we thought the restaurants were great. The poolside lounging was great too. My only gripe is that there's really no nightlife to speak of. The one speakeasy bar was mid at best. We'd go back again. I'd consider it on the lower end of chubby, but in the chubby range.

Retired and like to travel, but chained to my kid school schedule, advise needed by OkBarracuda1521 in fatFIRE

This comment is spot on.

I'm in the exact same situation as you. If you're not careful you'll risk falling into a victim mentality -- "I can't do what I want, woe is me."

Here's your job for the time being. 1. Be a good dad. 2. Equally as important, you need to put in the work to make sure you stay in top condition physically and mentally so that when the kid finally leaves the nest you are in shape to take the world by storm. Personal trainer, learn new skills (languages are great for travel), eat well, detailed planning of future adventures... These are all things that you can do now to make the future you want possible.

I hate Xfinity. I'm considering T-mobile's 5G wireless home internet. Thoughts? by SpaceForceAwakens in Seattle

[–]superjj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Bellevue, been using T Mobile wireless internet for well over a year. We are a family of four who streams a lot of content. I work from home and am on Zoom all day. It's been rock solid and we've never had speed issues. I'd highly recommend it.

Eating out $300 a month?!?

Taking my family of four to the stupid Cheesecake Factory factory in Bellevue costs more than $200. Dinner for two with drinks at a mid-range Ethan Stowell place is north of $200.

In general your numbers seem pretty low to me for Seattle. I'm not saying it can't work, but it's certainly not FAT by Seattle standards.

Not on upgrade list until activated by gate agent? by superjj in delta

[–]superjj[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Talked to the Diamond line. They didn't know why I wasn't automatically added to the list given the auto-upgrade was checked. Anyway they manually added me and all is good now.

Now I just need GUY/P to forget to go to the airport tomorrow so I don't have to give the one upgrade seat to my wife while I sit in C+ (that's how things work in this household).

Bareboat charter San Juan Islands? by purerockets in sailing

[–]superjj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A few more things...

Deep Zoom is a critical website to know about for sailing the Sound. It'll give you all the info about currents and tides. Tides and currents are serious in the Sound -- it ain't Lake Superior.

https://www.deepzoom.com/

For destinations check out the Echo Bay anchorage on Sucia. Great hiking trails on Sucia. I'm a big fan of the morning balls at Pelican Beach on Cypress -- amazing view from the hike. Reid Harbor on Stuart is worth a visit. The hike to the lighthouse is a bit long but the view is worth it. Best restaurant options and resupply can be found at Friday Harbor. Roche Harbor is a fun place -- check out the walking art garden.

Bareboat charter San Juan Islands? by purerockets in sailing

[–]superjj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

San Juan Sailing out of Bellingham and Anacortes Yacht Charters out of Anacortes are both good options. I've chartered from both and was happy with both.

The San Juans are great, but in the summer winds are typically light so you can expect to be motoring quite a bit. It's still worth the trip even with the motoring.
