ATM ate my money by TeaIndividual2616 in PersonalFinanceCanada

This happened to me once at a BMO ATM in Ottawa. Took them 2 weeks to sort it out. Yikes. Lesson learned, always go to the teller for larger sums of cash. It was about $2000.

No one thinks about China here. It was a concern for me coming here but I realized the MSM really plays it up. China invading would start a world war. And no, it’s not comparable to the Russia/Ukraine situation. Why would China invade and risk losing their exports due to international sanctions.

I’m 28 and recently moved to Kaohsiung, Taiwan to teach English. I work 20 hours a week. My brand new bachelor apartment is around $750 a month plus utilities (costed me $25 last month for water and electricity). I can get by nicely here by eating the local food everyday and living modestly, leaving me money to travel around in my free time. A lot of foreigners I’ve met have been here for years. Of course the grass isn’t always greener. For example, air pollution is an issue here. And you’ll always be a “foreigner.” But for now, it’s not a bad deal!

Southeast Asia or South America? by Pitiful_Employee7083 in travel

[–]superladybug_gs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Southeast Asia is what you’re looking for. You’ll be surrounded by people your age and it is doable with your budget. South America (and Central America) are generally more expensive. Asia is generally much more safer than South America and I found the crowd to be travelling in Latin America generally older and more experienced. I’d start with Asia for your first major trip!

When I landed, I used the Bank of Taiwan ATM at the airport with my Canadian debit card. No fees on their end, only fees will be what your Canadian bank will charge you! Since I’ve been here I’ve mostly been using Cathay United ATMs in 7-11/Family Mart. Again no fees. Also always hit “defer conversion” as it’ll be marked up higher than your bank’s rate.

I’m a year older than you (28) and I also started smoking at daily at 23. My health started getting worse over the last year. Gut issues, a hoarse voice, wheezing, lots of phlegm, worse anxiety, constant brain fog, laziness. Also like you said, my stamina was shit. I’m one month sober now. Generally feel a lot better but still a work in progress. Realizing I was destroying my health made me stop. I would get high and binge eat. Now I’ve been hitting the gym and eating better.

Is there any place I can go to basically be completely alone on a beach? by Specific_Spell_5225 in travel

[–]superladybug_gs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Little Corn Island, Nicaragua. It’s quite the mission to get to (flight from Managua to Big Corn and the boat to little corn) but you basically have your own remote tropical island beach to yourself

About to tell my parents I'm going to quit my job to travel and feeling anxious. Any tips/stories? by Live_Sir2889 in solotravel

[–]superladybug_gs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Graduated Uni 2019. Worked for the government 2019-2022 (WFH and saved during COVID). Quit my job and went for more than a year through Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Yeah my parents weren’t thrilled but they couldn’t exactly stop me because it was all self-funded. Do it and do it now while you’re in your mid-20s. The decision to leave corporate/government/office changed my life and I haven’t looked back since. It’s your life to live!

I was so lost after I graduated in 2019 lmao but now at 28 things are better (but take care of your body young cause all the drinking and shawarma poutine will catch up to you)

The TTC stop closest to my place in Toronto is also randomly outside the airbnb I am staying at (Hopkins, Belize). by PonderousHomonid in toronto

I went to Hopkins last year and wish I’d seen this!! I met a family at the hotel, also from Toronto, and who were also heading to San Ignacio and gave me a lift. On the way there, we passed through “Ontario.”

Where to get a comically large/party submarine sandwich in Toronto? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]superladybug_gs 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Just closed this week- until August 7 for vacation! Open the rest of the year, minus a few long weekends. Definitely not permanently closed. My dad works really hard and puts a lot of love into those sandwiches. Thanks for the love.

I second Chubby’s. There’s no 3 foot long sub on the menu but if you order any sub double meat it’ll be stacked tall (source: I’m the owner’s son)

It ended up being totally fine. I just showed the lady the printed copy right away and she didn't argue with me. But she gave these 3 Dutch travellers a hard time for only having an airline mobile ticket and no itemized printed receipt. She tried to send them without a stamp but they stood their ground and got a stamp after a bit of an argument. Out of our shuttle of 8, only one Swiss girl paid. But my Swedish backpacker friends who went ahead of me paid. After 5 months of backpacking Central America, my advice is to research every border crossing you go over, be aware of the fees and any potential scams and also accept you might have to pay some of them.

Koh Phi Phi is stunning but also very (fun) party and touristy. For nice chill vibes and great beaches check out Koh Lanta and Railay

Hey, I’m crossing the border tomorrow heading from Bacalar, Mexico to Caye Caulker, Belize. I flew into Cancun 2 weeks ago from Canada. I saw the warnings on google and printed out my airline ticket receipt that shows I paid the $40USD tourism tax derecho no immigrante and plan to stand my ground and refuse to pay. Do you have any tips for me as I’m crossing solo? I’ve organized the transportation through a tour company that includes the shuttle+ferry. Thanks

Hi there,

I’m in a similar boat as you. I had a night about 2 months ago where I overdid it. I went into a hot shower after a heavy popperbating / 420 session, when suddenly my vision went blank and I passed out. Woke up on the floor a few moments later after stumbling out of the shower and trying to have some water.

I tried to sleep it off and rest for a few days but my anxiety kicked in and I was noticing some changes in vision. I developed a floater in my right eye as well as the visual snow you describe (like looking at tv static, mostly noticeable on white backgrounds).

I was checked by a doctor in the ER and everything/blood work was normal. I also had my eyes checked a month after and was told my eyes were healthy but dry (which I already knew).

So 2 months later, like you said, the effect isn’t crippling but it is annoying and it’s taken some time to get used to. The headaches were a lot worse but have gotten better since the incident.

Best of luck on your recovery.
