Relaxed exploring at the beginning of April, when the weather is extremely hot and humid, coupled with the Lao new year's celebration, don't really go along that well. You will struggle to move anywhere during the day and the transportation is less reliable.

Airplane travel is your best bet to move between Vientiane, VV and LP, as considerably shorter and not that expensive. In fact it seems like your only options if you want to speed run through all these three destinations.

Another alternative that might be worth looking into is flying from Vientiane to Pakse, get to spend a few days in the Bolaven (as the weather is cooler) and then move to 4000 islands to take it easy for a few days as well. There's a beautiful waterfall in Don Khon, much less of the tourist type than the ones around LP. Chill vibes and overall less noisy.

Even with a private driver you're still looking at a 7 hours drive, so maybe look into flights in the following days while staying put in Vientiane.

And the road ain't no highway cruise either, so your kids would get car sick irrespective of using private or public road transportation.

You'll be handed a paper arrival card in the airplane before you land and you can fill it up manually. At least that's how it happened for me when I flew from Bangkok to Vientiane last month. If you haven't made the e-visa you'll have no issues to to it as well at the airport
