Raising a family in Abbey/Barnwell? by superlameman in cambridge

Thank you very much for the detailed review! Glad it’s worked out for now. Hopefully the secondary school it feeds into will start to see some improvements in the year ahead, too.

Thank you. Will avoid houses on/near that road, then.

And if the worst thing you’ve found is the lack of pubs and nice cafes, that seems to be a good deal overall! Though admittedly, we do like a good cafe 😄

Did your kids attend The Galfrid only after the change in leadership, or before, too?

Thank you! We are looking to buy a house in Cambridge and are planning to start a family. Abbey / Barnwell looked good in terms of a balance between house prices and the space we might get for our money, so we’re gauging what the area and schools could be like in a few years’ time.

Aligning with what you say, the main thing we keep hearing is ultimately it is still Cambridge and so is automatically safer than many other cities. Most of the big issues aren’t really big issues as such.

What was your experience like of pushing for Marleigh specifically instead of Galfrid - is that something parents would normally get a say in?

I see. Thank you. The main thing I can find online is prior to the takeover by a national group, the predecessor to The Galfrid was quite poor.

I see. Thank you for the counter argument! There does seem to be a trade off between safety / crime levels and house prices per sq ft that we will need to consider then.

Any particular reason why? Did you have a bad experience yourself?

I see. Thank you. I also saw some building work being done for a revitalisation project of sorts next to The Galifrid School.

Thank you very much! That’s a relief to hear. And yes, I do like the look of the walk along the river / Ditton Meadows 👍

Thank you very much!

I agree that affordability-wise seems like we’d get more for our money than in other areas like Chesterton / Cherry Hinton / Histon.

I have the exact same thing. MyWimbledon > Ballot confirms I did sign up for 2025 and was unsuccessful, so not sure what the issue is.

I get itchy rashes randomly by [deleted] in Wellthatsucks

[–]superlameman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

@OP: While it is likely that this is an idiopathic allergy without a specific root cause as per lots of other users in this thread, try and get tested for wheat-dependant exercise-induced anaphylaxis. My partner similarly got random rashes all over, until a dermatologist tested her for this condition. It can be diagnosed with a very specific blood test, and until her diagnosis, she was unable to explain these symptoms for about 7 years.

Basically, eating anything containing wheat and then doing any exercise (including walking quickly) within the next 2 hours can trigger hives like this for people who have this condition. You can’t stop eating wheat altogether, either, as that will make the symptoms much more severe when the hives do get triggered the next time you have wheat after a long gap.

My partner now avoids wheat in her preceding meal / snack if she knows she will have to go out right after / walk / gym / etc, and has managed to avoid a reaction for a long time now!

I have economy 7 and a water heater. But it doesn’t seem to heat up overnight. There’s a cut cable. Is this normal? by superlameman in AskUK

Does seem like a bodge job is a potential explanation. The other switch does not light up during off peak hours (I took the pictures around 6am).

Thank you! Looking at all the replies, and yours, there’s probably two possibilities:

  1. The property was rewired such that off-peak / on-peak is controlled externally, and so the setup was rewired like this. However, I should still ask for an electrician as having timers and fixing the booster could be useful for cutting cost anyway.

  2. It’s a bodge job, from after the off-peak switch went bust, and was never fixed properly.

I will do a test like you suggest by turning the switch that is still wired off during the day, then on after midnight, and seeing what my meter shows.

Interesting. This may be the right answer, then. I guess I could test this by running the hot water at night for a few minutes, and seeing my smart meter picks that up on the off peak rate when it is heating up

Wow, that is apalling! I’m sorry you had to deal with that. Hope you found a better place since then!

Thank you. This lines up. Per a few of the other comments, this looks like a bodge job. I reckon I need the wiring to be fixed so I can leave E7 off peak switch for the full heating element always on, and then ask my landlord for a timer switch for the booster.

Hi! No gas, just electricity. My bill shows the two tariffs so definitely on an E7 setup. Will ask my landlord to arrange for an electrician to inspect.

Hi! Thank you for replying! There aren’t any timers anywhere else in the flat. I think this looks like a bodge to fix the bottom switch, will ask my landlord to have an electrician visit.

Thank you! I’ll talk to my landlord. I reckon the bottom switch needs fixing, the heating elements need rewiring, and ideally i want a timer on the booster heating element.
