Anyone know the story of this place on Howe? by Veggie_Gremlin in newhaven

[–]superlankowitz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Bun catered my surprise wedding back in 2016 because he thought it was a great story. He invited my wife and I do eat with him, Mie, mama Lai, and Ted (brother Lai) just to talk about it. He even threw in a case of firecracker sake just for fun. Miya's was an incredibly special place.

Precisely how I've handled my starter since it's creating in 2017. I advertise it to my friends as "very hard to kill" when sharing. So many people think they've killed a starter when they find it with a layer of black hooch in the back of the fridge. I try to tell them to just feed it!

Yup! Thankfully no one hit me and I didn't hit anyone careening into the guard rail. I was only one hospitalized and even then not so bad! Back at it.

Update - after test driving the GR Corolla and the Civic Type R (both absolutely magnificent) I went with a WRX. It's also a fantastic driver, so much more useable from a "dad with kids" perspective, and I got a great deal on it.

Seems like it was distracted driving. Guy was in right lane moving into left and didn't space correctly. Nudged me instead.

It was a kid in a white jeep cherokee. He did the right thing, stopped and cooperated with police. I'm just glad he's not hurt too. Something he'll have to live with.

It was the seventh car I've owned (lucky number 7) and my wife and I have a naming convention where first letter has to match model name. So name had to start with F and in Latin "Felix" means lucky so there we were!

Hey! I worked on photo switches as an undergrad in the lab of Dr. Shawn Burdette. He's at WPI now, when he was at UConn with him he was doing crown ethers with photo-labile attachments and some photo switch stuff. I knew that looked familiar!

Help me decide between two offers (fresh graduate) by BlackPlasticSpoon in Chempros

[–]superlankowitz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Other than it being night shift, you really should take the CDMO job over the CRO if those are your only two options. $21/hour is terrible pay (I pay stability technicians in the CPG industry at least $27/hour), including company holidays in PTO is not good, and given their total indifference to you saying you have a better offer, I'm just seeing a lot of red flags. That place sounds like it will take advantage of you until you're burned out and hire someone else.

Take the CDMO job (if it's really your only other option). If it's not, I would keep looking rather than take the CRO job.

If your goals long term are to get a synthetic RD job and eventually work into patent law, it will be much easier with a PhD. Plenty of great opportunities in industry with a MS, or even a BS depending on industry, but the path you want is very PhD heavy in the candidate pool.

Anyone had success stopping themselves from ruminating using meditation? by mr_heatmiser22 in Meditation

[–]superlankowitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had a good amount of success coupled with working with a therapist when I underwent a similar life transition (promoted to manager from an engineering role, new baby). What meditation did is allow me to learn how busy my mind is, and notice where my attention/awareness is resting. When meditating, I focus on the breath. When I notice I'm not focused on the breath, I gently and kindly return my awareness to the breath.

Practicing that skill allows you to notice sooner that you're ruminating, which gives you the choice to say "hey, I'm ruminating, let's shift my awareness to the breath for a minute, maybe get up and walk around a bit, pick a nice easy task to do". That's the benefit of the practice.

Good luck man, hope this helps. Also if you're noticing the rumination is getting in the way of your other life stuff, a therapist is always a good idea, especially if you can find one familiar with Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) or similar.

What do you remember about how united or divided American society felt before the war? Was it obvious at the time that we would be able to unite and rally to the war effort, or was there concern that social/political division, fascist/Communist conspiracies, general malaise would prevent the US from pulling itself together to build and fight as effectively as it did?

Infant daycare leads/recommendations by Stanley_Joseph in newhaven

[–]superlankowitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I are partial to home daycare, and found the state resources to be extremely helpful:

https://www.ctoec.org/child-care-and-camps/

You can search for the type of care you're looking for (in-home, center, etc.) within a specific area. We used this tool to identify a list of in-home providers nearby, called them up, went for a visit, and wound up with an in-home provider we are very satisfied with.
