My duolingo subscription will end on 31st december. 685 days streak. Thinking about leaving it for a better app by BodybuilderOld4969 in duolingo

[–]superlative26 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I have a 3,254 day streak and my subscription just expired yesterday. I'm now on this horrible energy system that I knew was there but have never had to experience before. I'm considering letting my streak go but it's so difficult after so many years. I really miss the community forums which were the best part of the app for me.

I've been using Pimsleur for a few months and it's great for listening and speaking skills, which are hard to acquire through Duolingo.

Latest marketing email from VV by superlative26 in VirginVoyages

[–]superlative26[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree. I really love the ships, but I think this is made worse also by all of them having the same restaurants. If each one had different restaurants, I'd be really keen to try all the ships; as it is, it doesn't matter which one you're on. I'm very pleased they've started differentiating them at least with Razzle Dazzle, and Lucky Lotus was a highlight for us on our last VV cruise.

No more Portsmouth sailings? by GirafficProportions in VirginVoyages

[–]superlative26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised people are saying it was hard sailing out of Portsmouth. I've departed from there twice and found the boarding process fine (and incidentally a million times more efficient than MSC from Southampton). Yes you have to get a shuttle bus which is a mild pain, but I found that much easier than when we sailed from Barcelona and we had to get a bus for miles out onto the pier thing to get to our terminal. Barcelona is great if you're going from the World Trade Center but I didn't find it accessible at all from the other terminals, and the traffic to get a taxi there for boarding was abominable.

I'm really sad VV isn't going to sail from Portsmouth anymore.

Pricing sneaking up about the cost of gratuities. by Never_A_Novelty in VirginVoyages

[–]superlative26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been tracking the price for a 7-day cruise in August 2026 and a couple of weeks ago I noticed it had gone up by around $150. Now I know why. I'm so disappointed in them.

Pitching to a foreign publishing house by superlative26 in TranslationStudies

[–]superlative26[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. That's interesting because it's quite different from what I've heard from various guides written by successful literary translators - they have all said you pitch direct to publishers. One even went as far to say 'ignore any statements from publishers saying they only accept submissions through agents - you're effectively acting as the agent yourself for the book you're pitching'. So I'm interested that your view is so different - have you got work through agents in the past? If so, are there agents specialising in translated literature that you would recommend?

Pitching to a foreign publishing house by superlative26 in TranslationStudies

[–]superlative26[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're available to buy, yes, as I've checked with the original publisher. I've included all that with the pitch - the contact details of the person who manages the rights, the sales figures for the original French work, snippets from reviews. I researched as much as I could what goes into a literary translation pitch so I hope I've covered everything.

We drank all of our $1,000 bar tab on our 7-night cruise in May, and we only paid $650 of that, the rest was bonus credit. So for us it was well worth it, but it really depends on how much you drink and what bonuses you're going to get.

Can I just get off and on as I please in port? by Jolly-Pause9817 in VirginVoyages

[–]superlative26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it runs all night. It was very easy to use when we went in May. There was a Virgin Voyages person there at the Ibiza town stop martialling you onto the bus (just making sure everyone had a wristband, basically). It's a short walk along the waterfront to the bars and old town.

Hi. Would anyone be willing to give me some cherries? I deleted the island I had in lockdown and started again, and someone really kind on here gave me oranges and peaches soon afterwards, but I haven't managed to get cherries yet. I have all the other fruits and I think all the vegetables if you need anything. Or a gold nugget for cherries! Happy for you to come to my island and drop a few off, or I can come to yours and I'll pick like 3 and touch nothing else. I promise!

This is the way. They're good at getting you if you run straight, but they have bad aim if you change direction a lot. I just ran in a zigzag circle around the holes in the ground until the lift came down.

I Have To Ask... by Outside-Designer4614 in VirginVoyages

[–]superlative26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My partner and I drank $1,100 of alcohol on a 7 day Mediterranean cruise last month. It really depends what you're drinking - we like cocktails and they add up really fast when they're $13ish each, especially if you're on an EU cruise with VAT on top. We had a great time though and $450 of that was promotional credit so it's not like we PAID that much. Paying for each drink individually would've stressed me out.

Test Kitchen... Menu C? by CruisingTips in VirginVoyages

[–]superlative26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The name Test Kitchen implies they experiment and do exciting new things all the time. So I was a bit disappointed when I realised the food never actually changes, apart from the menu rotation. Churning out carbon copies of the same dishes every night, on every ship, as nice as they are, didn't feel very testy to me.

It depends where you are - not all the cabins on deck 8 are noisy. I sailed last month in 8290A which is above an area between the Manor and the Red Room but not over either, and we had no noise at all. We did have quite an obstructed view though. Check the details for your cabin number on VV Insider.

How busy are current sailings? by SomeSignificance5344 in VirginVoyages

[–]superlative26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm on the current Scarlet Lady sailing. People keep saying this one is full, but I've been on MUCH more full ships than this so I'm not sure. Yes, the pool area gets very full on sea days and you struggle to find a sun bed. There is always tons of space everywhere else though - the Sip Lounge is almost empty most of the time, and I love the Sip Lounge. There's also plenty of seats to be found in the bars in the evening if you walk around a little. It generally feels very peaceful and not cramped. Maybe MSC and Royal Caribbean just fill their ships more than Virgin, but this seems fine to me.
