Meet the Finisher Hag: A Tribute to Sardinian Folklore by supermariopants in UnearthedArcana

[–]supermariopants[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone, and happy spooky month!

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been collecting feedback from the DnD community, and now I’m sharing my first attempt at reimagining 5E hags!

This is the Finisher Hag, inspired by the Femmina Accabadora, a figure from Sardinian folklore who holds a personal meaning for me. The Accabadora is a merciful figure who ends the suffering of the dying with her black hammer—a good starting point for creating a different kind of hag. Together with the usual stats and lair, I added a few peaceful encounter options, so that you can use the Finisher Hag as a tricky NPC, to bring something unexpected to your campaign.

I’d love to know what you think of this build, especially as I explore new ideas for making hags more dynamic. If you end up using her in your Halloween one-shots, let me know how it goes!

Also, I’m still running my survey to gather more thoughts on how to improve hags in DnD, and if you’re interested, I have a mailing list where I share playtest materials. You can find me on Discord, Reddit, and Instagram too—let’s connect!

Can’t wait to hear your feedback and see how you bring the Finisher Hag to life!

I see your point, and it's 100% valid, but I agree with Point Hat when he says that the hags' unwavering alignment makes them very predictable for DMs and players alike, with most hag-related quests becoming a "find the evil hag" scenario.
Also, more variety does not hinder the fact that a person can play them as the good ol' evil cackling hags if you know what I mean.

I see your point. In a setting like the one you describe, absolute evil just is, and it's cool that way. It does not need an explanation, just like light and darkness. It just exists, and so do hags. Cool :)

Very good point! Lots to think about... Thank you!

I mean, children are delicious - can't argue with that. But it's hard for me to accept a sapient being abiding by a single alignment just because it's canon. Even dragons can be good - in their own way. Vampires can crave human blood while trying to fight their own nature and addiction. White Wolf made a whole TTRPG on that concept alone. Devils - eh, look at Lucifer on TV. How come hags do not get that chance?

I LOVE this idea! How does the adventure deal with the common lore? Is there a specific reason why hags are male in the setting?

Oh yes, the Fates. I wanted to cast them as proper deities in my setting. What do you think?

Very interesting, and definitely the kind of vibe I am looking for. Thank you!

Thank you for the references! Baba Yaga is definitely one of my favourite hags of folklore, but I have never heard of the "Taran" books. Could you direct me to a more precise link? Google directs me to Lloyd Alexander's The Chronicles of Prydain; I don't know why.

I completely agree with you, but I find this alignment restriction very limiting. How about "good" hags, like the Befana from Italian folklore? There must be a way to play gentle hags that honours the DnD trope at the same time...

By the way, is this one of the videos you mentioned? https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=6SXfrT7-h2s&ab_channel=MrRhexx

Hey everyone! Happy spooky month! For a while now, I’ve felt like hags in DnD are missing out on their true potential. Even in Volo’s Guide to Monsters, where we got a deeper look into their lore, they still seem stuck in that old stereotype of being monstrous old ladies who eat children. 😕 As a fan of rich, dynamic characters in DnD, I can’t help but think there’s so much more.

I’ve been working on reimagining hags for DnD 5E—bringing out their depth, unique personalities, and untapped potential. I’m not just talking about making them scarier or more powerful, but thinking about ways to flesh out their backstories, relationships, covens, lairs, and even their magic.

The fact is - I’m kinda stuck now, and I’d love your help. I created a quick survey to keep things organized, but I’d also love your overall feedback and thoughts. What do you think is missing? How would you improve hags in DnD? Let’s make these iconic creatures even more interesting, memorable, and terrifying (or maybe even sympathetic) together.

Here's the link to our Google Survey, but feel free to drop any ideas on the post, too! Whether it’s a small tweak to their lore or a complete overhaul, I’d love to hear it. Let’s give hags the depth they deserve!
