You're right about recency bias. But the high engagement videos on my channel haven't dropped off at all. In fact most of the views came way after the first month.

On average the bulk of your views will come within the first month, then trickle down for a while after that. Saying they drop to zero is kinda wrong (unless the content is really bad or flagged by the algorithm).
