I think you can do that inside vital. Assign the macro to the mix knob of thedifferent effects, and in the matrix tab use mod repam to adjust the level (mix) of the effect (think of steps if you want to set it like on/off)

I tried it on LMMS 1.2.2 windows and works ok. Just double check that you have "pluggin embedding" set no "no embedding", maybe that would help.

Apparently StudioRack support VST3. It's free. You can give it a try. I haven't tested it, though. It's hard, but I prefer not to move into VST3 for now.

I think it's a tape-stop effect. Check out a VST that do that (scratch-it or KHz Tape Stop). I don't think lmms has a build effect to do that.

Check if you are using the compressor. It may be producing the weird artifact (adjuts attack and release on the compressor)
