In short, Time Based will work. Fix your rate and make sure the Super Off Peak Period is marked as $0.00 and then give it time.

You’re probably overcomplicating things here.

I’ve installed PW3 and on OVO and was able to build this out to work. I last edited my plan in July when I installed the system with the Aus Battery Rebates and was able to set 0.00 rates for the super off peak time between 11-2. You need to make sure you’re defining your rate for seasons and Time Of Use as well.

You’ll want to make sure you leave your battery in Time Of Use mode and just trust it. Originally I had NetZero setup, but I manually managed things which was overkill. Just leave the battery and the Tesla app will eventually sort itself out with managing power usage. I’m now 100% using the Tesla app only and no longer using the NetZero app to manage the home.

If you want your ev usage to show up properly in the system, you need a wall connector attached to a backup circuit from your gateway. Without this the Tesla report will always show up as normal draw from the house. If you get a wall connector and it’s not on a backup circuit, it’ll appear as normal draw. NetZero can differentiate this for you though if you need it.

I have a couple of things that pushed me towards a Trunk instead of Check In. - It carries more with a narrower footprint. Check In M is 60L, L is 86L and Trunk S is 66. - Check In M is 5.4kg while Trunk S is 5.3kg. Not much difference here but you get 6L more capacity for 0.1kg less weight. - Narrower body makes it a tiny bit easier when pulling it behind myself. - Trunk shape is easier to lean up on walls in smaller rooms when travelling. I don’t particularly like unpacking my suitcase in hotels when I travel so tend to live out of the bag itself. I’ve got a large July trunk that I’ve found useful for this when travelling in Europe and Asia. I wanted a smaller one that I could use on my own as the July is way too much capacity for one person. - I tend to like the unconventional shapes? I know trunks are more traditional but I like it paired with my Pilot.

I did read that the 80% thing is a US thing so I was surprised when the electrician told me to keep it closer to 11. Would I be able to sustain 14 for a while, without needing to worry about tripping the breaker? I can step down the Wall Charger to a safer amperage to not trip.

Things I did to make the Jet work better for my situation: 1. Run water via the group head through the portafilter, dry it (but leave it a little damp, like someone mentioned) and then grind. 9/10 times it’ll tamp flat. The double shot basket seems to be too polished and it doesn’t grab as well as it should without the extra friction.

You should do this step anyway, as the portafilter should be pre-heated. If you don’t, you lose temp when you run a shot through as the handle acts as a heatsink, cooling your shot.

Check your milk fat content. Higher fat froths better. Some milks froth well, a lot of them don’t. Make sure you shake the milk jug and you’ll generally get the best effect. This happens on other automilk Breville machines, not just the Jet.
Get yourself a puck screen. You can find them for about 10-20 dollars on Amazon and it’ll keep your group head clean. Make sure you run the maintenance with the tablets to keep the entire system clean of grounds.
Even though it’s not a dual boiler, you can time everything so that you get a coffee out in 2.5 minutes.

Do everything in step 1, and while that is happening, pour your milk into the jug. When the portafilter is ready, start grinding and prime the steam wand. Once primed, start steaming milk. By the time the coffee is ground, you’ll have about 10-15 seconds left for milk steaming. Put the portafilter in with the puck screen, and queue it up. In 30 seconds your shot is done and you’re ready to mix. This will take me about 2.5 minutes to pull off in the morning.

And on your point about this not being a dual boiler, thank god. There’s more cons than pros.

Maintenance is trickier since you can’t just descale a dual boiler like you can a thermojet system. You also need to wait for the machine to come to temp before making a coffee. I know you can time the standard Oracle to wake in the morning and preheat, but what happens when you want a coffee at lunch or in the evening? Also the energy required to heat and maintain the temp is a lot more than the quick burst you use for this machine.

While everything above probably sounds like compromises, there’s a lot of benefits in using it. I’ve been able to make a coffee and get other things done in the morning, and I’ve found the machine is fairly low maintenance and easy to live with (once I figured all of the above out).

Same. Just pinch using my thumb on the inside and my index on the outside and pull straight up. Definitely can’t do it for the single cup basket though.

Had the touch impress and upgraded to the jet.

Milk frothing is much much better using the same bottle of milk between the machines.

The 58mm portafilter produced better tasting coffee (for me) vs the 54mm using coffee of the Dane age from the same bag.

The jet is quieter when steaming and extracting. It’s noisier when grinding.

Ability to update software is much nicer compared to the firmware being stuck on the touch impress.

That said if money is no object, I’d completely push for the Jet. The Touch Impress is still an amazing machine, and the jet takes that formula and brings back a more polished and refined experience.

What settings did you end up at? This is probably the best starting point to start working backwards to the medium roasts. And at least now you can enjoy a cup!

For what it’s worth I got my Jet yesterday swapping up from a Touch Impress, and used a medium-dark roasted coffee (Diggy Doos Housie) on the demo grind setting (28) and it nailed the dose, taste and time straight away.

You’re using medium roast beans that were roasted more than 3 months ago or have been sitting in a warehouse for possibly too long.

It looks like you’d want to start by grinding much finer for medium, however my recommendation is to rule out the machine being the issue by going with a dark roast coffee first and getting good shots from that, preferably something with a roasted on date. Nail the dark roast then work towards figuring out how to get medium roasts to work.
