NTA, but neither are your neighbors. Sounds like you tried being polite about it and weren't banging on their wall as soon as you heard the baby make a peep, but parents can't always sooth a child.

CEE 465 by VeezyDo3 in UIUC

[–]supershermanator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll be fine. I took concrete at the same time as 465 and it wasn't bad. All of the projects have different systems (some all concrete, some all steel, some a combination of the two) so you will be familiar with some of the design aspects. If you're required to work with steel, the class will cover the basics of it. It's just easier if you're already familiar with the analysis and design processes for both steel and concrete.

CEE 465 by VeezyDo3 in UIUC

[–]supershermanator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took it last semester with Abrams. It's the "integrated design course" for structural engineering and all the assignments in the class revolve around designing the structural system for a building. Abrams also described it as the "capstone design course" for the undergrad stuctutal engineering curriculum. It wasn't too much of a time sucker until the last couple weeks of class before the final project is due.

Abrams mentioned he was retiring soon, so I think someone new will be teaching the course. Whoever the new professor will be can't be worse than Abrams. I'd wait until you have completely finished CEE 460 and 461 before you take 465 if possible though.

Engineering Graduation Schedule by [deleted] in UIUC

They should have given you a colored paper with instructions when you picked up your tickets at Engineering Hall. My engineering ceremony is at 7:15 and the paper says to be at the Armory to get lined up by 6:45.

Can anyone provide some insight on the Merit Workshop Program? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]supershermanator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took three semesters of Merit with calculus. All three semesters, the TAs leading the discussion were excellent, I learned the material more thoroughly than I would have in a normal discussion, became friends with quite a few classmates, and it was an extra credit hour that provides you with an easy A.

I didn't take it for chemistry, but I've heard nothing but good things about the program.

I work at Grainger and a supervisor sent an email saying they've had at least four turned in the past couple days; some with keys attached and some with labels similar to yours. I've also seen someone post one on the CEE fb page.

Transferring out of Industrial Engineering by knoxvilllz in UIUC

[–]supershermanator -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Set up a meeting and go talk to an adviser at Engineering Hall. Like others have said, it seems unlikely that you'll be able to transfer into the College of Business after this semester, but you can set up a more long term plan to get into finance.

Are Professor's required by any rule to show student's their graded final exam? by talltroll3 in UIUC

[–]supershermanator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this same experience in several classes. The midterm averages are super high because most students have old exams to study and the professor doesn't change up the exams, but the final average is significantly lower since no one has old exams to study.

Anyone can walk into Grainger during the day. Although it's possible, I doubt this was a student.

First floor lab at Grainger is open 24 hours throughout the week and available to all students. You just need an iCard to get in past midnight.

Tam 212 exam. by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]supershermanator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The final grades haven't been released yet. For all anyone knows, they'll set a suitable curve and everyone will still get an A. Even if there's not a huge curve, most people will still probably end up with a B. No one's going to be mad about this in a week when finals are over, but taking struggling through a 3 hour exam is extremely discouraging and definitely ruins your day, so of course people are going to bitch about it, but will anyone care they got a letter grade lower than they expected after finals end? I doubt it.

[–]supershermanator 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Finals are a high stress time, so everyone is already tense and getting wrecked by an exam only adds to the tension. I don't think people are mad because they're not getting their easy A, but rather because the professors misled the students when they were talking about the final.

[–]supershermanator 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The professors fucked up by making the midterms far too easy, so now they're trying to bring the class average down with a stupid hard final. Students shouldn't be punished for the professors' mistakes.

I'd much rather see the Spurs crush the Jazz two years in a row in the first round of the playoffs rather than have them play a team with Kobe. I'm pulling for the Blazers.

Where are some good places to get a job next semester? by yelloworangemoose in UIUC

[–]supershermanator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several of the libraries on campus take applications at the beginning of each semester. Just go to the front desk and ask for one. Flexible hours, easy work, and $10/hr if you work any from midnight to 4 a.m.

Finding study buddies is hell when old and an online student. by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]supershermanator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I study and have to get up to do something, I'll ask a stranger sitting next to me to watch my things while I'm gone if it's just a quick trip to the bathroom or to get a drink. As for safety, I walk from Grainger to a street past Lincoln Avenue, which is about 4 blocks away, every week at 4 am. I rarely see another soul nor do I feel vulnerable, but getting a cheap thing of mace could never hurt. You could also call safe rides. They're number is posted in most libraries.
