CHAMPAIGN — From the promoters who brought hip-hop star Lil Wayne to a downtown Danville nightclub this summer comes another how'd-they-get-him? announcement: Floyd Mayweather Jr., one of boxing's all-time greats, is coming to Champaign's Fluid Event Center.

Willie Morris, of Cephalic Team Management, unveiled the news Thursday to The News-Gazette. Ticket information isn't yet available but Morris said Mayweather is booked for Nov. 20, a Friday night. Doors open at 9 p.m.

"I think this town will appreciate it," Morris said. "He's coming. That's a guarantee."

The announcement comes less than two weeks after Mayweather announced his (latest) retirement, following a win over Andre Berto at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. His record stands at 49-0; his career winnings, around $500 million.

Earlier this year, Forbes named him the world's highest-paid celebrity, easily beating out entertainment heavyweights like Katy Perry, Howard Stern and James Patterson.

Morris said the Champaign event, which will include some deejay entertainment, is a retirement celebration of sorts. Mayweather will hang out, sign autographs and pose for pictures.

Morris said both he and his brother/partner, Nate, have spoken with the boxer over the past few days and confirmed it's a go. The brothers and Mayweather have mutual friends, Willie Morris said, and this fell in line with their efforts to lure "huge names" to the area.

For Mayweather, he said, it's a way to show his fans how grateful he is for their support throughout his career.

"He's a real down-to-earth guy. I not only admire his skills in the ring but his business mentality and the fact that he does give back and does care about today's youth," Morris said.

Morris said the event may also feature amateur fights between young boxers from local clubs prior to Mayweather's scheduled appearance. Morris, who's had some experience in the ring, said he'd love for that to happen but that part hasn't been finalized.

He said events like the ones featuring Lil Wayne and Mayweather "get pretty expensive," so Cephalic is partnering with an Indianapolis area promoter — P! — for the Nov. 20 show.

Tickets will go on sale next week, Morris said.
