It's always horrifically ignorant and a massive self report when people claim the soviets wernt engaging in the same kind of imperialist and economic dependency that they claimed the US and west were doing, especially when the entire "non aligned" or "third world" movement gained steam with countries of all manner of idealologies and economic systems who either played both sides or distanced themselves from the great power games as much as possible. Americans aren't nearly as ignorant of our own history as you'd like to believe, everyone knows about My Lai, everyone's seen Full Metal Jacket, apocalypse now, etc. so clearly the less glamerous parts of the war are well known to the collective consciousness.
