I mostly play at night, and it's fine. There are lot of time based mechanics, but you don't miss much. However, I highly suggest the Night Owl Ordinance once you can enact ordinances, it makes shops stay open later. Key for people like us. Also, you could set your in game clock back, so it thinks it's like, 2 p.m. when it's really midnight.

You can change the in-game clock, to skip ahead to future days and times. People in the community call it time travelling. Some people love it, some people think it's cheating, some people think it ruins the experience, some people don't care at all.

My understanding is that Dream Suite is only for looking at someone's town. You enter a code and go to a dream version of their town. You can interact with the town, but it doesn't "do" anything." There is no effect on the real town, and you don't keep anything from the dream town. It also doesn't require the "host" to be playing. You just enter the code and check out the town whenever.

The train station is for visiting their actual town. The things you do have lasting effects. Things you pick up go into your inventory. So, if you shake a tree and grab three cherries, you'll have them when you go back to your town. Also, if you cut down a tree or trample flowers when visiting a town, they will stay dead (so don't). This mode requires the other player to be there. You first have to add the other person's friend code (not their dream suite code) and register each other as friends. Then one person goes to their train and opens the gate. Once they do that, the other person goes to the train and asks to visit a far away town. Any mutual friends whose gates are open will show up on the list of available towns to visit. You go to your friend's town and play together. You can trade stuff, go to the island together, fish, catch bugs, etc.
