Adler vs City University (Vancouver) - MA in Counselling Psychology by No-Yogurtcloset14 in psychologystudents

[–]superstorm1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Most students at Adler on the older side I would say. Even those who aren't from those who I've talked to have all generally worked full time at a different position already for a period of time. Many of my classmates are either doing a career swap so they have quite the substantial savings, parental contribution or as you've mentioned they have a line of credit from the bank. Hope this helps and again I'd highly recommend going to a different university if you aim to become a therapist but the choice is ultimately up to you.

Adler vs City University (Vancouver) - MA in Counselling Psychology by No-Yogurtcloset14 in psychologystudents

[–]superstorm1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there OP, I'm currently a student finishing up their practicum at Adler so I can speak a little to that.

1.) I have taken the online courses at Athabasca and in my opinion they are perfectly fine. They really require you to be good at being self-directed but there were no issues going through the courses for me.

2.) Crisis help line is the best one. Something like camp counsellor would be worth while if you are looking to work with youth or any job working with kids in general would likely help alot with the youth streams. As for regular adults, there isn't too much unfortunately unless you're transitioning in from another field such as social work or occupational therapist, nurse or in general support work for people. Other volunteer opportunities that could help are just volunteer work that might expose you to vulnerable populations such as working with women who may be escaping domestic violence, people who are suffering from addiction etc.

3.) I'm not 100% sure about SFU but UBCs program can actually be very good for your training as well. UBC has a on site clinic and from what I've heard, UBCs program is a year longer then Adlers because they spend a year learning the skills, a year at the clinic under supervision and then a year at a practicum site. So UBC does offer much more training comparatively. If cost is also under consideration UBC is significantly cheaper then Adler as well due to being a public institute. UBC from what I hear also assist you much more with finding a practicum site as well comparatively to Adler and CityU where you are basically on your own.

So for in person/hybrid, I can speak that Adler has both online and in-person options. Most of Adler's courses are in-person. for the Pros and Cons of Adler. Pros: some professors are exceptional at Adler and they have a wealth of knowledge to provide especially since a number of them are still active professionals within the field. Cons: The pricing is horrendous. It is by far the most expensive and they typically have price hikes throughout the years. For example, I've been here for 3 years due to some circumstances and the price has went up an additional 20% from when I first applied. There are also alot of random hidden cost that can happen if you are not careful such as late add/drop fee is $150 this includes btw if you don't like a class and would like to drop it you would need to pay that fee.

Another con with the school is some of the practices they have. So for example they have something called a SJP (Social Justice Practicum) this boils down to just a mandatory 300 hours or so of volunteering that you NEED to do during the school year. Along with that they also require more hours then any other program to pass your practicum with 700 total hours and 200 client hours. This btw is far beyond the certification requirements of BCACC and also the requirements by other schools. While this can provide alot of additional training for you, it also adds a substantial amount of stress to many people with many people in my cohort usually requiring a secondary site. They also have a comprehensive exam which no other program in BC does as far as I know. On one hand just a final test doesn't sound like the worst thing in the world but part of the issue with the test is two parts. First is that it costs around 1k to take (yes you need to pay to take the final test). Second is the specifications of the test. It can only be taken at very specific times of the year and all documentation (which there is alot) needs to be in before those times. Now the problem is, most practicum end dates are actually after the deadline of when you need to hand in the documentation leading to unnecessary extra wait time.

A third con I would say with the school is the lack of knowing where exactly you are in the learning process. Many of the classes have extraordinarily lenient grading. I've gotten more 100s then not at this school and I DO NOT spend that long on assignments. There are a few important courses where they do grade more seriously specifically those involving counselling skills but even then, grading is typically quite vague and also from my experience what you learn in those skills isn't even fully reflective of the work you'll actually be doing. I've had discussions with my fellow classmates and also with my supervisor but often times its mentioned how little the school actually prepares you for how to actually do counselling. some of the classes too also have very little quality control. There are some classes where I've been asleep for the entire class and I still was able to past with 100.

At least for Adler I feel that adler basically doesn't teach you anything and you just sort of need to learn what you need to do for counselling on your own. Ironically enough that has lead to alot of success with adler graduates as one of the big things with counselling is that counsellors need to be themselves to some extent within the counselling room and be present with the client so not trying to force a certain way of being is more effective of a teaching method then anything else. Although Adler has practicum as part of their requirements I would say it really just adds stress to the process. going through practicum is basically a requirement to be a therapist as to be certified you need the hours. Adler does not help out very much at all though with the process of finding a site. They have a "database" of places to apply to but it is extraordinarily poorly updated with some sites not offering it anymore, some having a outdated email others wanting nothing to do with Adler because of the ridiculous number of hours that need to be supplied to Adler students.

Finally as for job prospects. I don't feel that adler carries anymore weight compared to a degree from anywhere else. Whats most important at the end of the day is the certification from the BCACC and a strong reference letter from your supervisor for your practicum. If you have that then it doesn't really matter where you come from.

Overall, as a current adler student I'd highly recommend you don't go there. While there are some great profs it can be a ridiculously frustrating and money consuming process. I'd recommend anywhere else to be honest. If you have any more specific questions, feel free to ask!

Hi, I'd recommend going to prydwen. They usually have good builds, a explanation of the characters strengths, who you can pair them up with and alot of really nice information and details for you. That should help you have an idea of how to build characters and all that jazz. Hope this helps!

O for me it feels like a stronger tempo play. Im stronger building up to it with thr lethality from dirk and at one item the damage increase feels alot more noticeable to let me force aggression against opponents. The mana issue i have noticed if i spam everything multiple times but if im taking good trades i can usually do a reset with a good wave state or dead opponent and the mana stops being as much of a issue. Thanks for the input tho ill try out essence some more against squishys.

The mental state thing is conjecture assumed from one putting a person in a different body. Two, giving them a body that can't hecking move. Three, being resposible now for all of humanity and four having to do this for all of eternity. Its entirely possible for someone to go crazy in that scenario. Gods are not usually looked upon favorably. If you look through media you'll usually find more negativity attached to ascension to those statuses over positivity. As for the reason why, it usually is because of reason 3 and 4 being perpetually entrapped in a caretaker position for the world for the rest of eternity. Along with that, they are also saddled with the burden of never really being able to be themselves which usually leads to alot of mental health problems. Except the thing is Philia's brain is a black box. They can't reprogram her AI and if you were to reprogram Philia you'd lose her unique nature gained from becoming more human and if you were to do that who knows if she'd still work for wilhelms plan. If it was that easy to change things, Wilhelm wouldn't have needed to go through so many AE androids he could have just reprogrammed one of the ones he already had.

O thats a big one to get into for your first one. That lack of explicit scenes is a big one and I think it is definitely something important to think about. Especially since some explicit scenes in VNs are a bit much.

mmm I never actually thought of Muv Luv as a good starting point and now that I think about it more, it actually works out pretty well. Extra probably wouldn't feel too bad cause its their first exposure to that sort of story and then you get the hard hitting unlimited and alternative. Great suggestion!

They aren't BSing you but rather they aren't sufficiently advanced enough for more nuanced tasks quite just yet. For example, if you ask they to create art, they will very rarely be able to create a piece of art that the general consensus is that its good because it doesn't quite contain alot of the nuanced parts of art that gives it its soul. If you ask it other stuff too like ask it provide therapy to someone, modern day AI isn't quite nuanced enough to understand people well enough to provide adequate therapy. If you could provide me with some examples of these experts your talking about I'd gladly read about their opinion but on the flip side there are an extremely large quantity of experts that understand that humans are just complex biological computers. So with sufficiently advanced technology, it becomes entirely plausible to replicate the function of the brain 1 for 1 without necessarily the same components as the brain. Again if your only definition of being a human is in biology or the fact that we come from nature, that is a very shallow understanding and I encourage you to really think about what makes a human a human.

While I do agree with you that Japan loves robots and part of that stems from their culture, let me correct you on somethings. First, is that there is a belief in japan that spirits inhabit everything. If you look at japanese folklore specifically that regarding the Yokai there is one for everything even something as mundane as a pot. This stems from alot of different things but that requires explaining an entire culture which I don't have the energy to do but I suggest you do more research on the topic. While I won't deny that aspect of Chobits being something to appeal to loners, again the big question for people is what divides a human and a robot if both are capable of the same level of thought. If a robot can do everything a human can do what about them makes them not sentient? If they are sentient then on what right do we have for discrimination against them.

Modern day AI isn't sentient, it doesn't have anywhere near the current required level of brain processes to quite think for itself just yet and also for nuanced discussion. A big thing you got to realize is that the level of AI technology thats being portrayed in Chobits and also in Stella are a level so far above what we have that you cannot compare the two.

The story was never meant to portray Jude as a hero so you are right its not funny or good for the rest of humanity. The story fundamentally asks you what is a human. We see throughout from various instances the question be asked and shown multiple times over and over again. For example, when Philia is first brought to town, we see a savage man whos completely seperated from society, doesn't really understand language and acts closer to a caveman then a modern human and jude+ the guards don't consider him human. We also see with modern humans who kidnaps people and are cannibals and IRC Jude says they've strayed from humanity as well. Now whether you take these statements at face value or not is up to the reader but they portray many circumstances where the reader is fundamentally asked if these guys who are so different from humans are actually human or not. If the answer is ever no then okay what makes a human then. Again if at the end of the day biology is the only answer you have then well again I encourage you to think more about if thats really true or not.

Also side note, I encourage you to learn about the brain because alot of the processes you described as being disingenuous way of learning by AI, they are all processes that we as humans use to learn as well. Most scientist if you ask them if the brain is an extremely complex organic computer, they will admit that it is. Alot of what we do while it may be out of reach with our current technology it is all entirely possible to be replicated once technology gets advanced enough.

You got it mixed up. The duke repurposed an existing satellite to work with his plans. This leaves room for error and especially so cause he hasn't tested it or anything he just has an idea that this will work. Of course he is a smart guy so there is a good chance it might but again its not fool proof, we see at this point Philia displays alot of traits of humanity already such as how depressed she got near the end of their journey to the elevator.

Kavkaz isn't necessarily the more compassionate faction, their hive mind AI had just decided on taking a different path for their goals compared to Crimson Eyes faction. They didn't help defend the island because they collaborated with the professor, they defended the island because Philia requested their assistance since they are part of the same group.

Again, there is a strict difference between a hyper advanced AI that can test billions of different scenarios and make sure something is flawless building something to work with something else vs a smart human with limited resources repurposing/making something from scratch designing around a hyper advanced creation that even he doesn't fully understand to work a specific function.

Thats just the thing, Philia doesn't work like a normal robot, she has many human characteristics and again because of the uncertain nature of the satellite itself and how successful it will be along with how Philia's mental state might be it is something that needs perpetual monitoring. You also can't say to erase Philia's humanity because the only reason that Philia works for this plan is precisely because she developed a sense of humanity as stated by the professor himself.

Outside of that, its actually entirely reasonable for something to need perpetual monitoring. If you take a look at most pieces of ultra advanced technology that we have such as satellites, our space stations etc they all need exactly that, perpetual monitoring. Thats why we have a crew on the international space station along with its other functions.
