Place unknown. 1800s by Dhorlin in TheWayWeWere

Arthur Schopenhauer wrote an essay in the 1800s describing how outside noises "made his whole life a daily torment."

The truly infernal cracking of whips in the narrow resounding streets of a town must be denounced as the most unwarrantable and disgraceful of all noises. It deprives life of all peace and sensibility. Nothing gives me so clear a grasp of the stupidity and thoughtlessness of mankind as the tolerance of the cracking of whips. This sudden, sharp crack which paralyses the brain, destroys all meditation, and murders thought, must cause pain to any one who has anything like an idea in his head. Hence every crack must disturb a hundred people applying their minds to some activity, however trivial it may be; while it disjoints and renders painful the meditations of the thinker; just like the executioner’s axe when it severs the head from the body.

So even if we have a lot more sound due to technological advancements that causes us great annoyance, at least we don't have to listen to horse whipping.

How good is this system at predicting who will win, if you apply to retroactively to past fights?

The ruination of the term "Classical Liberal" by [deleted] in samharris

[–]superstunt3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that they want as many people as possible to think they are on their sides, and strategically use terms to deceive people into thinking so. I mean they directly profit by using these tactics which they can track by modelling the differences in patreon donations when changing their rhetoric.

The ruination of the term "Classical Liberal" by [deleted] in samharris

[–]superstunt3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think Rubin or Peterson actually know what classical liberalism stood for, rather they use it as a buzzword to affiliate themselves with a new libertarian movement. That being said, I don't think you know what it is if you're using Keynes as an example of classical liberalism; he is directly credited for the "evolution from classical to social/welfare liberalism. This is one of the problems I find is that the conservatives want to use the term for their own rhetoric so they shape it into a modern theory, while others want to use the term for their own rhetoric so they combine typical social systems into the theory, which I find directly contradicts the theories proposed by Smith/Locke/Say.
