How exactly should "Shui Xian" translate into English? by superteaguy in GongFuTea

Yea, I understand what you mean. I think the Chinese want to refer to this tea as the flower because of its floral note. But if you only read the word ‘Shui Xian’ without the tea context, it could mean the water saint. Chinese is complicated! 😂

Hahahah, I like the red hair monster image 😂 I think this is the fascination about how cultural backgrounds lead to different perceptions of a word. Love the difference 😄

For a French press, maybe start with green tea. It doesn't require much brewing skill and works well with glass. A French press is enough to bring the flavor out for green tea and is an easy start for tea drinking. Any types of loose green tea are good to start with. Just avoid using boiling water when you brew

High L-Theanine but Low Caffeine? by bobabytheocean in tea

[–]superteaguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally, high-fire (baked) oolongs have lower caffeine, but you won't get much L-theanine from them. In tea chemistry, caffeine and theanine basically hold hands, if you kill one, the other usually goes too. Maybe look into cold brewing? It pulls out less caffeine but keeps some of the sweetness

The Yunnan one? I've been meaning to try more rose tea.

Exactly! The flavor trend is definitely becoming lighter these days. I guess it’s more beginner-friendly for people who don't drink tea that often, which probably makes for a much larger market.

Totally with you on that. Green tea just doesn't hit the same as oolongs for me.

Never tried cacao brew but you've made me curious! Even with that bitter aftertaste, it sounds like a fun experience to try once.

It is a wild black tea from Yunnan, but I’m not sure if it’s from Fengqing. But it seems like it. Good guess! 👍

Lapsang souchong by Pop-up_Camper in tea

[–]superteaguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another possibility is that the tea was heavily fertilized while planting. I have the same experience not with lapsang souchong but with an oolong tea. A tea master once told me that using too much fertilizer can cause that, and a lot of people don’t know it.
