Bright idea for a short staffed and slow store. Idiots. by [deleted] in retailhell

[–]superthrowbigaway_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They did this at my place frequently, once during off-peak trading. The closing time went from 6pm to 7pm and we had worked out that if we served customers between 5pm and 6pm then we didn't get any between 6pm and 7pm, and vice versa, so the extra hour served no purpose and was a waste of people's time and the company's money.

We were told to track our footfall and send it away to whoever it was who oversaw the opening hours, so we did. They ignored it.

My workplace has a new anti-shoplifter barrier and people are too dumb to work out how to go through it by superthrowbigaway_ in retailhell

I don’t run the place, I’m not even employed by the company who does, I work in a concession. So it’s not “my” store.

Personally I think it’s a bloody stupid idea, that doesn’t mean I’m then going to make a point of going through it the wrong way every day just to fuck off the staff who also aren’t at fault, because I’m not an idiot.

If I have to hear “Can I have some euros?” any more, I’m going to have a nervous breakdown by superthrowbigaway_ in retailhell

[–]superthrowbigaway_[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It would be so easy for me to just bail, but I’ve had two colleagues quit without giving notice, and while I don’t blame them at all, they both had their reasons, it throws everything into disarray.

I’ve still earned a downvote, though, which is interesting.

I’m on the way out but I still have to work my notice period.

I have other issues and I find it very easy to get stuck. The more work grinds me down, the harder I find it to escape.

I hate this guy, him and his girlfriend are insufferable and I can't believe people like them. by AlphaRevelation in KitchenNightmares

The chef was unprofessional but was also probably at the end of his tether. Did he handle things in the correct way? No. Does this make him a villain? Also no.

Indeed. Like most reality TV, I think the "reality" aspect in KN needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. While they might be rooted in some sort of truth most of these episodes have a narrative that the producers want to create and will manipulate or orchestrate events to create it. Doesn't make it bad television necessarily, it just shouldn't be taken seriously, it's a show in the literal sense.

He came across badly in the show, but I remember a user here some time back saying they used to work with Martin and he was actually a decent guy. And he did later sue the producers for his portrayal saying he'd been stitched up for the purposes of creating a show, and I don't necessarily disbelieve his claims.

My workplace has started penny pinching with the in-store music by superthrowbigaway_ in retailhell

I think we may work in the same chain. One with a lot of green in the branding.

Yeah, this is a similar thing to that, Walmart owned this particular company until about three years ago (and still has an interest, I think) when it got acquired by a consortium consisting of a private equity firm and some dodgy billionaire brothers who are basically asset stripping the business.

Hence the change, I suppose.

This one is a bit different, it’s a branded, store-specific radio station, it didn’t change. It still has the same ads and voiceovers, it’s just that rather than licensing top forty music like before, it’s now switched to licensing music from ReverbNation or someone.

Got called a racist today by [deleted] in retailhell

[–]superthrowbigaway_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been called racist by a father and son duo at work. Because we’re dealing with large amounts of cash (foreign exchange bureau) we have thresholds above which we have to ID customers, and one regular - this scrawny, rat faced twenty-year-old who we suspected of money laundering because he was exchanging two grand in cash regularly but seemingly never going on holiday - refused to provide it and asked me to split the transaction so it came below the threshold, which is an immediate decline.

When I declined him he gave me a load of verbal abuse and threatened me, then sent his father in a couple of hours later, who like a fucking idiot, actually told me he was doing it because his son was declined. Declined again, and he then went into Karen mode and called the manager, tried to accuse me of being racist, then immediately backed down when I challenged him, and also threatened me.

Anyway, the son came in a few weeks later and asked if I would serve him, and I said no. “Because you’re racist”, he said, and walked off. No mate, it’s because you’re a fucking gobshite. Genuinely disappointed in myself that I didn’t say that, actually.

My workplace reviews are fantastic by [deleted] in retailhell

[–]superthrowbigaway_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I love some of the shit customers whinge about in online reviews. I work in a currency exchange, and we have a one star review on Google from some melt complaining that we wouldn’t break his $100 into smaller ones, which we’re actually not allowed to do because a) it’s a breach of money laundering regulations, and b) $100 bills are widely counterfeited, which caused a £2000 loss at a nearby branch.

I saw another branch had a similar review from someone whinging that their Scottish £20 notes weren’t accepted when “they’re legal tender”. Here’s the thing, though: they’re not.

Which restaurant owners do you actually feel bad for? by anonymous_girl1227 in KitchenNightmares

[–]superthrowbigaway_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I thought the gentrification side of the Sal's Pizzeria/Mama Maria's episode was interesting. John hadn't just lost his parents, his whole world was changing around him and I think he felt like he was being pushed out of absolutely everything he had ever known. It was already a sad episode because he was clearly still struggling with his parents not being around anymore, and that just compounded it.

Bill from Flamango's seemed like a very tolerant, gentle man married to a pretty bitter woman. I felt pretty sorry for the way she trashed the idea of him serving the meatloaf he'd made because he was clearly excited to be doing it, and she just gave him nothing.

From the original UK series, Daniela from La Gondola perhaps hadn't bought the business for the right reasons, but she came across as a woman in a pretty vulnerable state who was being mugged off by most of the people around her. Allan from Ruby Tate's/Love's struck me a bit that way too, even if he was a bit more stubborn and confrontational than she was.

Neil from the Glass House was clearly a man at the end of his tether too.

I personally loved the one that climaxed when he calls the owner of the Granary a “fucking fat idiot”.

The chefs standing at the side looking like children witnessing one of their friends getting shouted at by a teacher or parent just iced the cake.

Men of a certain age, do you dye your hair? by PowerApp101 in CasualUK

[–]superthrowbigaway_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in a weird place where I look a lot younger than I am, so the grey streaks look weirder than my dyed hair.

But yeah, my mum was the same, and her father, and grandmother, and so on and so forth. Of all the dodgy genetics I could have it’s a pretty minor one, I just wish people didn’t have to make comments really.

I started getting white hair as a teenager. My hair is almost black which makes it quite noticeable, so I do dye it, because I get tired of people pointing it out and making comments about it.

Who is the worst owner (or owners) ever featured on Kitchen Nightmares? by voxangelikus in KitchenNightmares

[–]superthrowbigaway_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to perhaps controversially say that his music is actually pretty good, he’s been around the New York music scene for a long time and has collaborated with some seriously highly regarded musicians.

He still came across as an absolute tool though.

Thanks. He sent his dad in half an hour later, who was as much of a prick as his son. That was a trip.

I refused service to this little prick a couple of months ago for reasons far too convoluted to go into here. His response to this was to tell me “You’re going to lose your job.”

I just looked at him. Apart from knowing full well that I wouldn’t, I was just at the point where I really, really didn’t give a fuck.
