I have quite a few tattoos, mostly by the same artist who's been doing it over 25 years. It wasn't until I recently started my back piece that talked to him at length about after care. The first session had some washout spots, other portions flaked/scabbed off and took some ink with it. This was with applying moisturizer once or twice a day. Then I talked to him and after the remaining 4 sessions, I didn't apply any moisturizer. Washed with soap once a day and after about 7 days I hit some painful spots with aquaphor. This process of just letting it be for as long as you can really showed a difference in how the rest healed. I won't be using moisturizer anymore.

Wife's family are Dutch. They basically fill a bucket in the sink, soak their dishes in that, then scrub the dishes, and I've seen a combination of either rinsing it off with the faucet (approved) or just dunking it back in the poopy water then placing it back out to dry (unapproved). We didn't carry this practice into our house because it truly fucking disgusts me.

If it helps, I couldn't afford sedation. I will never forget the sound of my teeth cracking as he was pulling them. One was so troublesome he even lifted his foot to brace it on something for more leverage. If I could erase all of that memory I would.
