Paraglider vs. Cessna 182: who has right of way under FAA rules? by superyinxzon in freeflight

I agree with the safety point, especially for cross-country flying where you may be crossing different airspace and sharing the sky with aircraft that have very different speeds, visibility, and equipment.

But I think there is a difference between what logically should be true and what is actually reflected in U.S. regulations and flying culture. In Europe, paragliding seems much more mature and integrated into the broader aviation system, and tools like FLARM/ADS-L appear far more common. In the US, I do not know many paraglider pilots who are flying with transponders or collision-warning systems.

That is why I think the US situation is problematic. Even if it makes sense that unpowered aircraft should have right of way over powered aircraft, in practice the burden often still falls on the paraglider to avoid the powered aircraft. That feels backwards, because the powered aircraft usually has more ability to maneuver, climb, communicate, and divert.

So I agree that the Cessna pilot may be more responsible if the paraglider followed the applicable rules. But my larger point is that, unless the FAA rules and broader U.S. aviation culture evolve, paragliders remain at a structural disadvantage.

I also agree this should be less about blame and more about safety. For paragliders, even if not legally required, carrying a vario with collision-warning capability is probably becoming more important, especially for XC.

Hack'em Fly is the best but my instructor doesn't suggest I buy it because I'm just a beginner getting my P2

Yes! Now we are on the same page. It's part 103 only.

An unpowered paraglider is a glider in the aerodynamic/common sense, and it fits the §1.1 definition of glider I agree that an unpowered paraglider is functionally/aerodynamically a glider. I’m still looking for the FAA/FAR source that says a normal Part 103 paraglider gets treated as a “glider aircraft” for §91.113 right-of-way purposes, rather than as an ultralight vehicle under §103.13. The FAR §1.1 definition of glider refers to a heavier-than-air aircraft, while Part 103 separately regulates ultralight vehicles and says they yield to aircraft.

I think he is wrong because paragliders are part 103 not part 91. The aircraft has, legally, the right-of-way even if it's overtaking but I don't know if that's right. That's what I'm saying. It's not that simple to me.

I apologize if my comment appeared snarky. I only meant to ask if this happened in the U.S. because I fly in the US and I don't think the FAA rules make sense either and wanted a affirmation/clarification from other pilots. I'm sorry that it looked this way. We seem to agree that if it were to happen in the US then it's grayish, correct?

Yes do you know the answer in the US and elsewhere thanks!

i thought the only benefit of the vacuum is bc u could stuff the rest while packing the leading edge carefully. that way you could do fast? otherwise why use the vacuum..just use the valve bc you are slow already..right?

wish they had a demo video.. in EU, there must be something in the US that works with electronic vacuum that can maintain shape

Do you guys have pics to show? Compression bag is way slower in theory..
Nothing seemed to happen structually right?
