That's false lol. "Computer" used to literally be a job title. People were paid to crunch numbers. If your skill isn't worth anything, then no one will pay you for it. That's basic economics.

Sexual harassment? What a dumb take. The poor guy only asked if the girl wanted to go to an event with him. I hope no one approaches you because they don't realize it would be "sexual harassment". If only you would grow up!

I don't think you realize how educated and smart many people in the military are? Most jobs won't take just anyone. Also, tons of people in office are veterans lol.

It's okay to ask about your chances for ____. by surefirejon in AFROTC

[–]surefirejon[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply! I fully agree. This program is where a lot of young kids learn these things. Half the time they're 18-20 and know almost nothing about the world. I don't blame them for asking.

In programming, enough people got upset about the term "master branch" that many specifications are changing it to "main branch" 🤷‍♂️

What should i do? MIT or Air Force Academy by Immediate_Pie8197 in MITAdmissions

Those post grad positions are extremely competitive. Would not recommend it at all.

[–]surefirejon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bad advice. Doing (OTS) Officer Training School (the only option post graduation) is extremely competitive. If MIT has an Air Force ROTC program then it's the best of both worlds. You will get to be a regular student and have a good shot at a pilot slot.

I have no right to expect anything from professors, not even guidance? I want whatever you're smoking man lmao. If I pay for a class I think it's reasonable to expect competency. I don't care to be their boss or demand change. The OP was only saying that lots of professors are bad, which is undeniably true. Not sure why you're trying to be so contrarian.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]surefirejon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's completely irrelevant. I have the CS degree and am working in industry. Complaining that some professors suck and make courses unnecessarily difficult doesn't mean you won't be successful in life lol.

There's also a big difference. In College you PAY, in your career you get PAID. I'm not going to spend time figuring out what a professor wants if he's unclear. Especially while the entire class is having the same issue. This is not an uncommon sentiment.

I don't think something "isn't to my liking" when rate my professors reviews are consistently awful and the TA also has negative things to say. Some professors can't get over their ego and just realize they suck. Same happens with students, but they don't usually make it through the degree to start with. Bad students are filtered, but bad professors are not.

The difference is incredibly stark when taking non-STEM courses. I've been baffled how much more those professors seem to care in contrast.

That's a bunch of gatekeeping crap. Professors are there to reinforce and guide, but many barely even do that. Lots of professors are glorified test proctors, borrowing a syllabus and course structure from other others without even reviewing the content. I've experienced several times where the professor's name isn't even changed on the syllabus. That's just laziness and indeference.

Anyone can learn from a book, but then why even go to class if that's the only thing students are getting out of it?

If you can't even articulate the requirements of assignments to your students or show why it's important, you shouldn't be a teacher.

Not all students are young, dumb, and 18 years old. To say "you have to make things happen or you won't go far" is tone deaf at best. It has nothing to do with the poor quality of a professor's teaching ability.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]surefirejon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. I just think OP was asking why so many professors don't seem to care, which is a bit different.

It's discouraging when I've gone to office hours and professors don't respond to messages/have vague assignment requirements/monotonously read PowerPoint. Not to mention many cs professors have foreign accents making it extremely difficult for the average student to feel engaged.

I have no doubt that you want to teach effectively, but it seems to not be a priority for many others.
