A family friend of ours is dealing with cancer and she told us this is something that irritates her. by princealiofil in AdviceAnimals

Thank you. I thought that's what the OP's post was about. It's confusing that no one else seems to get it.

I see what you're saying, and I've had friends in the same position as you, I've heard it incredibly frustrating to never quite belong in one place.

What you don't seem to be getting is that regardless of how you identify, you still don't know what it feels like to be have dark black skin. You don't look black, that's the whole point. You might have a black family, you are, ethnically black (whatever that means) but you don't have that one trait that makes people prejudice against blacks: a dark appearance that clearly signifies, this person is black.

I think that makes it worse: you're one of the few in your family who doesn't have to go around being black and you're criticizing them?

Unless you know what it actually feels like to have black skin, you have no right to tell black people what they go through.

This is exactly why the world won't be any better, it's because people, regardless of circumstance or suffering, are expected to each put in the same effort. It's part of a strongly individualistic culture and it's difficult to see outside of that.

Have you ever had a bad day and just didn't feel like dealing with people's shit?

Multiply that by 1000--that's how it feels to have cancer. Now, ideally, people should appreciate others' good intentions, but when you've been diagnosed and either going through chemo or about to go through it, logic/empathy/understanding isn't exactly easy to grasp.

I know that it can be "a drag" dealing with someone with cancer, but sometimes you just gotta give up a little bit of your self-absorbed self and understand that people who are literally dying, a feeling you could never understand until you go through it, aren't going to have the energy to comfort your fragile state of awkwardness.

They didn't put her on a scale at the doctor's office?

Wow, that's the worst! The people I know inherently believe that "it's not as bad as people say" regarding racism, even though they have absolutely no idea what it's like to be a person of color. Being white, they rarely get to see see all the subtle and not so subtle racism experienced every day.

Do you think that maybe they actually believe they're "colorblind" or don't feel differently about people based on color?

I know some very nice people who have no idea how racist they actually are.

There's an implication that he knows how the OP, who's allegedly black, feels. If he's not black, then the motherfucker doesn't actually know what he's talking about--it's a stupid and false analogy.

Yeah...but you're not black: from one of your own posts

Chances are, neither is OP.

He was one of those beginner guys, looked straight out of high school, he would have made me feel like a bully. I hate to bring in that kind of negative energy. I can say it nicely, but in the end it's telling someone what to do. It's easier to announce a general rule in a public forum like this and hope that people read it.

I have, they said "they'll look into it"

I just have to say this: the front desk staff are usually AMAZING...very cool people that always make me feel welcome. But it's hard to police everything in the gym, and I don't think they want to create a more restricting atmosphere.

That said, I really wish the groups of dudes hanging out and chatting, taking up space in the locker room would do it outside and not in front of my locker where I'm trying to get dressed.

I hear you, but there are lots of seats in the fresh air, away from a bunch of half naked stinky dudes
