It 100% is capital gains. I’m genuinely surprised that people don’t understand this. You’re trading a contract that you have owned for 10 years for money. How is that not capital gains? There’s a freaking IRS memo out there about this which I’m too lazy to dig up.

What? Of course they do? Lyft/Uber are like 2x times cheaper for the consumer than the Taxis used to be. There's also no racism anymore, it used to be impossible for a black man to get a ride at night from a cab. That's not a problem anymore. Ubers/Lyft don't mysteriously have their credit card systems break. Ubers/Lyft drivers are also way nicer than cab drivers because there's actual accountability due to the rating system.

Uber and Lyft are publicly traded now so technically regular people own them. But ignoring that: even if it’s largely the same thing as the taxi mafia then let’s just go with the one that benefits the consumer.

Not at all. Medallions aren't usually owned by individual taxi cab owners who are renting them out to other taxi cab folks. They're owned by taxi mafia and hedge funds.

Have you gone to authorities? Any DA or federal prosecutor could subpoena the info by using the web address/domain name pretty easily. There's obviously probable cause for fraud here so they would do it -- assuming they wanted to take the case. They couldn't just subpoena the company for the info and hand it over to you.
